According to Gentile et al, “Children spend more time with electronic usage than they do in any other activity, aside from sleep.” (E1) Although we may think there are not a lot of negative outcomes from electronic usage, there is more than meets the eye. Studies have been conducted to find out if negative issues during adolescents are linked to electronic usage. These experimental studies show that excessive electronic exposure has a destructive result upon children. The first reason parents should monitor their child’s electronic usage is because of the physical health issues. High levels of electronic usage are linked to adolescent obesity. If children are watching media all day, they will not want to exercise or engage in extracurricular activities. Heavy electronic usage can lead to the lack of physical boundaries. Greater electronic exposure results in negative health diseases. The personal image on the internet of how people should appear is damaging to the pureness of this generation’s children and other generations to come. The second reason parents should monitor their child’s electronic usage is because of psychological abuse to the mind. Electronic usage gives people an opportunity to bully or be bullied. Childhood is very critical in development of knowledge for what is wrong, what is right, and the consequences regarding the circumstances. Cyberbullying can lead to depression if not stopped. Depression, if not assessed, may lead to suicide. Jealousy plays a huge role in bullying. Kids do not know how much bullying affects a person’s vision of themselves. Parents play the largest role in their child’s experience with electronics. Each parent has a different opinion on whether or not they want their child to have electronics, but it all leads to the same question: Is this benefitting my child in their early years of

A child's overall development can be mental, physical, and emotional. In the article “Give me that old time recess”, the author discussed the negative consequences of children losing playtime. “In a growing number of studies, diminished opportunities for outdoor playtime have been linked with school difficulties, increased childhood anxiety, disconnection from nature, attention deficit disorder, and the epidemic of childhood obesity” (Gross-Loh Par 4). This quote is important because children today are suffering more from obesity, and attention deficit disorders due to the decrease of structured play. Children are becoming less active due to the the dependency on technology. The increase in obesity is the result of the rise in children having smart phones. With children having smartphones, they lose the desire to play outside. The lack of play causes an increase in depression among children and teens. (Tanner Par 10). This is important because today’s generation has a large dependency on technology “Sixty-five percent of children under eight years old watch television daily. On average, they spend about an hour and a half (100 minutes to be exact) watching TV every day.” (Conrad Par 3). Childrens dependency on technology is related to depression because many children have a hard time communicating and socializing with other children due to technology ruining children's interpersonal skills (Bindley Par 4).
Do kids spend too much time on their screens? Everywhere you look you see kids on their devices. When they are at school and when they get home. Even at night kids are texting friends. This is so common for the generation of today's kids.
Many people have a wide range of opinions on whether technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that have the greatest effect on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily. Michele Hamm, a researcher in pediatrics explained, “There were consistent associations between exposure to cyberbullying and increased likelihood of depression.” Cyberbullying became widespread among students with the rapid growth in use of cellular devices and the Internet. With this kind of technology bullies have the ability to send harmful messages to their recipients at any given time. This type of bullying is the hardest to control because it involves students but often happens off school grounds. However, because the evidence is material, students and parents could bring this evidence to the school and local police departments if a situation were to happen. Parents should be mindful of their child’s use of the internet and electronic messaging, cyberbullying usually takes place in a medium in which adults are seldom present (Mason, 2008). Also, instead of sending direct messages to other students, bullies use platforms such as social media and anonymous blogs to post harmful things for others to see.
