The Butterfly is a cinematic exploration with a political edge that fuses the tender relationship between a teacher and a student during the year 1936. Spain was intertwined in the struggle between the Mussolini inspired Nationalist Party and the Republicans. The main character Monchos life is constantly interrupted by the problems brought by the Civil War going on in the country.
The movie follows Moncho, a child growing up in 1936 in the northern Spanish region of Galicia. The film shows the development in his childhood, which changes abruptly due to the unstable situation of the Spanish Civil War. Moncho is afraid of going to school because he has heard that the teachers hit children. He comes to find out that his teacher, Don Gregorio

Butterfly can even have a certain Brecht-esque quality to it. Because it contains several moments that can make the audience member question what is going on and the story itself, Brecht would be happy. The show can confuse the audience and make them think. Gallimard and Song also talk to the audience directly at certain points which in a way can distance them from the story because it can make it known that they are, indeed watching a play. M. Butterfly holds many political and Brechtian qualities that prove many issues that go on today.
