Overview
I chose this article for review, as I am a new manager in our Family Medicine clinics and looking to the best leader yet!? In reviewing this article and reflecting on the type of leader, that I wanted to be it reinforced my previous learnings that praise and thanks do lead to happier nurses and other members of the team!
Problem Statement
The problem for the study was to determine when it is appropriate and effective for Nursing Unit Managers (NUMs) to give praise to their subordinates.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study was to explore how praise from NUMS affects the work environment, job satisfaction and practice of nurses caring for surgical patients.
Research Question(s) and Hypothesis
The study?s one broad research question was; what are the associations between praise from NUMs and job satisfaction, professional practice, workload, work climate and

The questionnaire?s context provided answers to the research question that was asked. The questions were based on the components of the research question; how praise from NUMs is associated with job satisfaction, professional practice, workload, work climate and organizational commitment of nurses caring for surgical patients. I do not believe that too much data was collected. The questions were straightforward and asked appropriate workplace environment questions. I do not think that the right amount of data was collected. The number of nurses who participated in the study was less than half of the number of participants who were eligible to participate. I do not think that an accurate representation of the sample was portrayed. Furthermore, the study was only performed at one medical institution which can lead to homogenous answers from
Not only does The Francis Report call for more compassionate care, but it also states that stronger leadership is required of all ward nurse managers. It also insists on a change with regards to the appraisal and support system for nurses. This appraisal system is a means of assessing the performance of nurses so that any shortcomings can be corrected through methods such as training and transfer. On the other hand, a positive assessment is to be rewarded by promotion.

The phenomenon of interest has been identified as the expressions of caring by nurses on acute care general surgical wards (Enns, C., Gregory, D., 2007). This problem statement was addressed promptly and clearly in the article. The caring research that has been obtained in other studies has yielded inconsistent results due to the varying definitions of caring. Numerous research has been done on the phenomenon of caring by nurses specializing in several areas but the population of surgical nurses has been “relatively neglected in caring research” (Enns, 2007). Caring is a phenomenon that has been universal throughout nursing, it is a trend that will forever be current due to the ever changing scope of nursing. Increasing demands on nursing staff and the acuity of the patients causes stressors to the “surgical ward environment (and) affect nurses’ ability to provide ideal care” (Enns, 2007). The aim of this report is to answer the question “What are the expressions of caring from a surgical nurses’ perspective?” (Enns, 2007). An appropriate qualitative study has been chosen because “...
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
...en who are there each week are incredibly inspirational, and they never seem to be discouraged, even though some of the patients have been there for five to six weeks in a row. I look forward to seeing their smiling faces each time I visit, yet I cannot help but hope they will not be there but will be at home the next time I visit. The children and youth I have met at Children’s Hospital have become dear friends, and they have taught me that leadership involves making the most of the talents we each have been given, and seeking excellece, not perfection.
Quantitative Research Article Critique This paper is an academic critique of an article written by Lautrette, et al. (2007) titled: “A Communication Strategy and Brochure for Relatives of Patients Dying in the ICU” and accurately reflected the content of the article and the research study itself. The abstract explains the article in more detail, while remaining concise.
Those that held a higher level of education were a less satisfied with care received than those with the least amount of education. The expectations that patients already had about how their healthcare was going to procede was a determining factor in their level of satisfaction and the level of involvement in their own care was also a factor. Patients’ who developed a trusting, honest and respectful relationship with their nurse reported a higher level of satisfaction and expressed receiving quality nursing care when the nurse took time to listen. The final indicators for quality care, was the competence and knowledge of the nursing staff and the organization of the facility in regards to continuity of care. Patients expressed greater satisfaction when the staff worked together to care for them and the staff appeared skillful and knowlegable in their
My success as a nurse leader will be based on my ability to lead and inspire others. I will . . . “act with integrity, set realistic goals, communicate clearly and often, encourage others, recognize the successes of your team members, and inspire them to provide the best of care.” A winning team can be built only through a shared vision and acknowledgement of each team member’s contribution. (Frandsen, B. 2014). My success as a nurse leader will not be by my work alone, I will have my team of great, effective staff behind me. My success will be
The purpose of the article I reviewed by Lykeridou, Gourounti, Deltsidou, Lautradis, and& Vaslamatzis (2009) was to examine women’s level of depression, perceived anxiety, and overall stress related to infertility while receiving fertility treatments. It w as hypothesized that the etiology of an infertility diagnoses wouldwill affect female’s psychological vulnerability. The variables that were looked at in the study were infertility diagnoses and psychological disturbances. The levels of infertility diagnoses used in the research were male factor infertility, female factor infertility, mixed, and idiopathic infertility. The various levels of psychological disturbances included depression, perceived anxiety, and overall fertility related stress.

...sponsibilities as a nurse manager clearly show she has a vision to reach her goals for herself as a manager as well as her colleagues and staff. She has clearly shown how her planning would effect in the production of her ward and her staff. Furthermore, her leadership as a nurse manager shows that she is well organized, determined and focused on the potential of maximizing patient care and their needs. Her management on how productive workload could be for her and her staff shows that she is capable of managing time, organization, and creating a stronger foundation to the nursing field. Overall, she clearly deserves to be awarded for her outstanding work, dedication, and contribution to her facility. She truly exemplifies how nurse managers should take charge, making sure that her collaboration among staff and colleagues would change for the better in patient care.
Nurses play a critical role on patient’s health; the relationship that a nurse and patient develop can in some cases be life altering. Applying these characteristics and being a servant leader to patients establishes life long impressions and makes critical difference in treatment allowing for optimal care to be received. Always listen to patients concerns, be empathetic in their concerns, and help while committing to their personal growth, one never knows whom they are actually a leader for. Some individuals look up to nurses and count
Azizi-Fini, Mousavi, Mazroui-Sabdani, and Adib-Hajbaghery used a questionnaire to structure a descriptive research design. This research study was used to identify, specifically, which characteristics of the nursing staff unequivocally affect patient fulfilment (Azizi-Fini, Mousavi, Mazroui-Sabdani, & Adib-Hajbaghery, 2012). This study follows an applied research format, as the question is already answered. It is understood that the care provided by nurses affects patient satisfaction, but now Azizi-Fini et al. want to answer the question in more detail. The research process approach used is quantitative. A quantitative approach was the best approach, because the researchers need specific questions answered in order to form an appropriate outcome.
In my medical career, I have been privileged to work alongside some of the most professional, dedicated, knowledgeable and compassionate nurses. I have seen first-hand the difference that they can make in a patient’s life and their family, during those unfortunate times when sickness and injury can be so overwhelming. The appreciation and respect that I have for nurses, as well as their indispensable contribution to the health care system, is what encourage me to pursue nursing as a profession.
...nts. We can alleviate fears and anxieties by connecting with our patients and families. In the OR, this means a warm blanket, a hand to hold, a tissue to wipe away tears, encouraging words, understanding eyes, a shoulder to lean on, and a nurse to trust." said Kelly Walsh, BSN, RN, thoracic surgery coordinator at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. (Unknown author, “What I Love About Nursing”). Nursing is a job for life, It just never stops giving. Everyday, there is new thing to learn, and its always the technology changing for the nurses. It gives us hope for those who shake our hands and tell us “thanks” that makes us love what we do. It’s the simplest things that are the best. But there’s nothing better than saving a another person’s live. And at the end of the day, its great to know that you gave someone else the gift of a lifetime.
