When I think of “family” and “relationships” I don’t think of a certain type or way that they have to be. Because there is no real definition that a family or a relationship has to follow, as long as there’s happiness and love then nothing else matters. When I think about different types of families and relationships that are present in today’s society, I think about how well the show “Modern Family” depicts each of them. The show is made up of three different families that are together a family, but it focuses on each individual family’s struggles within the family and their relationships in society. First I am going to start with the patriarch of the family Jay Pritchett; he has two children from a previous marriage, Claire Dunphy and Mitchell Pritchett who have started their own individual families. Jay and Gloria get married, making Claire and Mitchell her stepchildren even though they are around the same age, and making Manny Jay’s step son. Jay, Gloria, and Manny all live together, and recently Gloria and Jay had their own son together named Joe. Their family is an example of a “nuclear” and “blended” family. They are a “nuclear family” because they are “a heterosexual couple with one or more children living in a single household (Ferris & Stein).” They are a “blended family” because Jay is Manny’s stepfather as he’s not his biological father. Jay and Gloria’s relationship is an example of “exogamy”, because they are married to someone with a different racial background as Jay is Caucasian and Gloria is Colombian.
