A Modern Day Crucible
It was 1692 when a chain reaction spreads mass hysteria through Salem, Massachusetts. The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, sheds a light on these events that are the Salem Witch Trials. Fast forward to 2017, after the Presidential Election when President Trump enters office. In both the Election and the Salem Witch trials, they begin as small issues, but quickly become problematic, leading to chaos and disorganization. It is a spark that grows into a flame. The Crucible relates to modern culture by the way hysteria clouds society’s judgment and leads to misinterpretation and assumptions.

Today, blame towards Trump is frequent because he is not living up to the nations standards and rumors are circulating that his plans might bring down democracy. None of this is true, instead it is hysteria that is corrupting our government systems as it was during the Salem Witch Trials. Speaking of this, The Crucible is another great example to how lack of proof or false evidence plays a role in the development of hysteria. Just like when Proctor, Elizabeth, and Mary Warren are all discussing the trials and its escalation, “She never knew no commandments, and they had her in a flat lie… It’s hard proof, hard as rock, the judges said” (1272-1273). Mary Warren, like most of the townspeople, put all of their faith into the court. They did it because the Court was associated with justice and very concrete laws, so there was no room for gray areas in cases, meaning what they say must be true. Many times, blindly following others was why the Salem Witch Trials happened in the first place, which is the same thing as getting wrong information.
