Misunderstanding and Consequences from Appearances

In society today, people judge one’s personality based on their appearance. For example, someone may appear to be ugly and is therefore deemed weird and a loser. However their judgment may be incorrect because one’s appearance may not show the reality of whom they actually are. In the play “Twelfth Night”, the author, William Shakespeare, demonstrates that when people are perceived incorrectly, it can led to misunderstanding and negative consequences. Throughout Viola’s, the main character, struggle for love, the audience is shown various examples of incorrectly perceived appearances causing repercussions and confusion. These examples include social appearances, friendships, and physical appearances.
Throughout the play, the audience is shown that narcissism can cause consequences and confusion. In the play, one example of a narcissist is Malvolio. Malvolio, who is a lowly servant, believes he is above everyone else and demonstrates this during various occasions. For example, he scolds Maria, another servant, for partying with Sir Toby, their master’s uncle, and his friend, Sir Andrew. Malvolio scolds her, saying, “you [should] not give means for this uncivilized rule. (Act II, scene III, Line 115 – 116)”. Because of Malvolio’ narcissism, he made himself a target. Maria wanted to “gull him into a nayward, (Act II, scene III, line 127)” and did so. However, as the plan was in action, it got harsher on Malvolio, and the consequences became worse, for example being locked in a dark room. Even those repercussions had consequences, such as being locked in the dark room made him crazy. This also resulted in confusion because he was misled by the prank, thinking that is master was interested in him. This caused the misunderstanding of M...

...she was mistaken as Sebastian and Antonio came to her rescue. Consequentially, Antonio was found by Orsino’s officers and was arrested. However, Antonio was not the only one who faced consequences because of Viola’s appearance. Throughout the play, Viola ached inside for her love for Orsino. Nevertheless, she had to keep her love inside, due to her appearance, and suffered inside because of it.
Throughout the play, the audience is shown that one’s incorrectly perceived appearance can be the cause of repercussions and misunderstanding. This is demonstrated in various examples such as social appearances, personality and physical appearances. However, the audience is taught more than this. The audience is also taught about life, friendships and the human mind. But more importantly, Shakespeare teaches the audience about love and that true love will prevail in the end.
