What does it mean to be a leader? Is it really just about leading people? Or is it something more? According to Daphne Mallory, "Leadership is the art of serving others by equipping them with training, tools and people as well as your time, energy and emotional intelligence so that they can realize their full potential, both personally and professionally." Mister Douglas ‘Doug’ Roberts is a Lt. j.g. on the USS Reluctant, a cargo ship off the coast of an unnamed island. He is the ship’s cargo officer, but he dreams of getting off the ship and going into combat. Mister Roberts shows many traits throughout the film. Mister Roberts gets the news of the men getting a liberty, and tell them a little bit after he receives the letter. Also, when he eventually gets off the ship and goes to war, he sends a letter to Ens. Pulver, telling him about what he was doing, even at the time of writing the letter. This was a good thing to do since the men may feel like they are never going to get off the ship. Mister Roberts developed a sense of responsibility with his subordinates. Lt. j.g. Roberts tells Ens. Pulver that he will not respect him until he carries through with something he starts, such as, when he said that he would put marbles in the Captain’s overhead. Also, when the men find out that he stopped writing letters so that they could get liberty, they respect him so much that they forge the Captain’s signature, which is a federal offense, just so he could get what he wanted, too. The final trait that is shown by Mister Roberts is to know yourself and seek self-improvement. He knows that he is a better leader than the Captain and that he must use those skills elsewhere, so he tries to get taken off the cargo ship and put into combat. He finds himself in his crew. The second person that shows these traits is the Captain, though some of them he could really work on. He only cares about his own reputation and sees the men as pawns to get him recognized and
