The word negativity means an expression of criticism of or pessimism about something. This state of mind can lead to lower self esteem, less happiness and enjoyment, less feelings of strength, less energy, and a lack clarity. In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the author uses Miss Havisham’s self pity and negative attitude to create a devilish influence for Estella, manipulative and snobbish demeanor, and depressed and cynical individual that dislikes change. Negative thinking is a form of self abuse, and it is our worst enemy. In the novel, the author uses Miss Havisham’s self pity to create a devilish influence for Estella. For example, Miss Havisham states, “Look at her,(Estella) so hard and thankless, on the hearth where she was reared! Where I took her into this wretched breast when it was first bleeding from its stabs, and where I have lavished years of tenderness upon her” (304).
