In the United Kingdom, over 100,000 people suffer yearly because of others motivated by their own hateful prejudices (“Hate Crime”). People are screamed at, beaten, and even killed as a result of hate crimes. Hate crimes in the United Kingdom are becoming a leading social issue, but before hate crimes can be prevented, people must understand what a hate crime is, why hate crimes are considered a social issue, and why hate crimes matter to everyone. Examples of hate crimes include physical assault, verbal abuse, criminal damage to property, harassment, murder, sexual assault, fraud, burglary, hate mail, and online hate (Caller). Now, you might be thinking, what is considered a misidentified hate crime? A misidentified hate crime, otherwise known as a hate incident, is an incident that the person affected or anyone else believes is motivated by a person’s identity (Caller). Hate incidents are not criminal offenses and usually are less violent than hate crimes, but they are still harmful. If we educate ourselves about what a hate crime truly is, we can help stop the misidentification of hate crimes, allow for more accurate data regarding hate crimes, and let more victims come forward. Hate crimes affect society as a whole, and the rise of hate crimes is crippling society in the United Kingdom. In 2017, there were 94,115 hate crimes reported.
