Adolescence is the time when a person discovers who they are. They discover what is important to them, the type of person they want to be, the type of people they want in their life, and what direction they want their life to go. Combine the mundane troubles of adolescence with the intrepid journey of heroism, all at the ripe age of thirteen, and a very hectic journey of self discovery begins. Marinette Dupain-Cheng, from the animated series Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Cat Noir, is burdened with the onerous task of discovering not only who she is as a beloved heroine, but who she is as the girl behind the mask. At school she is constantly tardy, and is essentially a nobody. The only attention she receives is from her best friend, Alya, and Chloe, a girl who has made it her mission to torment Mariennette. In the beginning of the series Mariennette makes very little attempt to challenge these social perceptions associated with her, and simply accepts the less desirable views that people have of her. However, when Mariennete is pushed into the persona of Ladybug, she is unable to act as a passive pushover, and instead must act with confidence and strength. The longer that Mariennette lives this double life, the more each of her alter egos inherits traits from one another. For example, as the series progresses Mariennette transforms from this shy, passive girl who lets Chloe bully her, into a strong, confident young woman who ends up defending, not only herself, but her peers from Chloe's immorality. This transformation happened because while taking on the role of Ladybug, Mariennette learned the power she had as an individual and the importance of standing up for what is right.
