Dystopian Literature is a form of writing that uses existing problems and escalates them to show their negative impacts on society. Minority Report, Fahrenheit 451, and Animal Farm are all great examples of dystopian literature and effectively demonstrate how certain problems have a negative impact on society. In Steven Speilburg’s movie Minority Report, he uses the events that John Anderton experienced to demonstrate the overbearing control of the government in Washington, D.C. In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, he writes about Guy Montag and his quest to prove the burning of books and other forms of literature isn’t beneficial at all to society. One of the main characteristics displayed in a dystopian society is the illusion of a perfect one. In Minority Report, the main purpose of Precrime was to prevent murders in Washington D.C. In the opening scene, the viewer witnesses John Anderton and a group of Precrime officers burst into Howard Marks’ residence right before he was about to murder his wife who was cheating on him in order to stop the slaughter from happening. Stopping all murder in the city seems like it is a characteristic of a utopian society, but as the movie progressed it was revealed that it was all an illusion. The problem with this system was that not all people were going to go through with the murders they were predicted to commit. Because the people at Precrime will never truly know if the person would commit the murder, many innocent people could have possibly been detained for something they wouldn’t have even done, demonstrating how the society may look perfect but has many underlying issues.
