It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
Both were given a workshop with skills on how to study, but one was also given lessons on what a growth mindset was and how to develop one. The group given the lessons on growth mindset was extremely fascinated by the thought that they could control how much knowledge they were capable of learning. Overall, the growth mindset group excelled while the control group continued to not do so well. After receiving these results, Dweck was so inspired that she developed a growth mindset computer program called “Brainology,” that would be available to students all around the world. It may seem ridiculous that we make decisions based on thoughts that we do not even know we are having, but it is certainly true. This test has really opened my eyes to the fact that although I considered myself very open-minded, even I have a slight bias in some regards. The most important lesson from this is that awareness is the key, and these biases will forever be engrained in our subconscious if we do not take the time to face them. As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balance person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.
Learning is defined as the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study or by being taught (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Every student has a different way of learning, or if you will a learning style. Learning style is defined as an individual’s unique approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses and preferences (Dictionary.com, 2014). Many professors try to accommodate the different learning styles of their students through lecture or one-on-one time sessions. The International Dimensions of Technology and Culture at University of Colorado at Denver is different from all of the other courses that I have taken on this campus due to the teaching techniques offered by Dr. Michael Tang. The professor of this course shows his students how to study for this particular course and hopefully apply this study technique to other classes. The study technique is referred to as mind mapping. Mind mapping accommodates the visual learners, logical learners and kinesthetic learners. Mind mapping is designed to make complex reading simpler to understand, make simple units of meaning into complex units and make connections between those units, and help students understand these relations as the whole. The process of mind mapping helps students recall information better. However, the main purpose of mind mapping to help students synthesize and integrate knowledge in a visual form.
