Most people has ate or seen a Hershey chocolate bar. But do most people know who founded these delicious chocolates? Milton Hershey was the entrepreneur who founded the Hershey Chocolate Corporation and a philanthropist. His life as an entrepreneur wasn’t easy. It was full with success and failures but it all lead to a great success. He was born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania on September 13, 1857. ("Hershey's." 1) Milton in his early years of his childhood followed his father who seeks out big opportunity. A year after Milton drop out of school he grew an interest for candy making and became an apprentice for a confectioner. He set up his own shop at the age of 18 in Philadelphia. In Denver he discovers caramel and how fresh milk can make it. But Milton wasn’t happy working under someone so he left Denver to start again alone. First he went to Chicago then to New York City and fail both times. He was so stubborn and tries again when he returned to Lancaster and starts the Lancaster Caramel Company. This time the business is a success and he is shipping caramel throughout the country.
At the Columbian Exposition in 1893 Milton was inspired to work with milk chocolate candy. So he sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for 1 million dollars and opened a new path to Hershey and the candy industry. The Hershey Chocolate Company was a great success and it started to expand. The Famous Amos cookies sold $300,000 the first year in the business. The very next year he sold $1,000,000 in sales the following year afterward. By 1982 the cookies had earned at least 12 million dollars. The cookies were such a success they were eventually sold in supermarkets across the United States. They eventually went into places like TGI Fridays, Baskin-Robins, and Starbucks. Eventually all good business must come to an end because in 1985, Wally Amos sold the company to the Shansby Group. Though it wasn’t his company still, Wally still was a spokesperson for the company for a year before quitting because of frustration. The company was eventually sold to many companies including President Baker and Keebler. Even though his business didn’t fall through he still didn’t quit. Eventually Amos created another company called Chip and Cookie. The new cookies are slightly different from the Kellogg version or variation and is only ran by Wally himself.
Milton Snavely Hershey was born on September 13, 1857. He was born near Derry Church, Pennsylvania. Derry Church is in southern Pennsylvania near the chocolate factory town of Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton was born into a mennonite family. He spoke a german dialect of original Pennsylvania dutch. His mother followed the teachings of the Mennonites. Their simple faith was something she practiced all her life. His father on the other hand was a farmer. His father Henry Hershey, did not make much money as a farmer so he moved his family all around southern Pennsylvania. He did this in pursuit of a way to make money. Milton attended seven different schools in eight years. Going to all those different schools seemed like it was for nothing because Milton did not attend school after fourth grade. He was born in Baltimore in 1748, but his story begins long before his birth. It started when his father’s family immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1680’s. His father just so happened to move to Maryland, where he met his wife, married her, and settled in Baltimore where William was to be born. William had many hard times and little schooling until he was ten, when his family moved to North Carolina.
Before Milton Hershey had a world wide known chocolate business, he had a small, not so well known caramel business. Milton Hershey began his chocolate making business in 1893, when his father and him traveled to Chicago to attend a big job fair (Tarshis 14), but it wasn’t until 1900 when Hershey succeed in making the first milk chocolate candy bar (The Hershey Company). Hershey attended an exhibit hall of new and amazing inventions around the world at the fair in Chicago. As Hershey walked into the exhibit hall, he was struck by a delectable smell (Tarshis 14). “Hershey was already a leading candy maker. He had created the largest caramel factory in the country, but he became convinced that the future of his business would be chocolate. At the fair in Chicago, Hershey Bought chocolate-making equipment. He had it shipped back to his caramel factory in Pennsylvania. Then he hired two chocolate makers. Soon the company was churning out chocolate candies in more than 100 shapes” (Tarshis 15).
The founhder of the company, Godfrey Keebler, started with jus a small bakery in Philadelphia, PA in 1853. During the next two generations, local bakeries popped up around the country, including Strietmann, Hekman, Supreme and Bowman. With the introduction of cars and trucks (carrying the Keebler logo), bakery goods could be distributed beyond the neighborhood and regional distribution began.
For Milton Hershey, he was the type of person that not a lot of people expected a whole lot out of. He was your typical small town boy, and although he had very little growing up, he learned to be happy with what he was given. Although Milton Hershey, did grow to be an amazing businessman, he had almost no formal schooling or education after being thirteen years of age. He left school to work, and also to help take care with his mother. It was while Milton was growing up, that his father (Henry) left his mother. In many ways, it was Henry, Milton’s father, who inspired him to be the type of leader he was, and to never give up, no matter how many times he failed. While Milton was still growing up, Henry tried getting in on the oil business that was going on at the time. While he did learn a lot from the experience, he walked away empty handed. The problem that Milton could see with his father, was that he was bursting full of ideas, but he had no money, and was growing older as time went on.
