Jaiden Dozier Business Management Professor Perry Williams 01 June 2024 Million Dollar Arm Million Dollar Arm is a movie based off a true story about two boys from India that joined a contest to win one hundred thousand dollars by throwing a baseball, which neither of them had ever done and make it to the big leagues. The contest happened because of sports agent J.B. Bernstein and his partner having financial difficulties because they lost their big client to competitors. When this happened, Bernstein came up with the plan to turn cricket players into the next big thing in Major League Baseball. With the financial help of Mr. Chang and the help of a talent scout, Bernstein traveled his way across India looking for these ideal candidates. After …show more content…
Bernstein hope that this plan would work out for all. After the contest, the boys were given the winning money, and they went to visit with their families before leaving for the United States. Once they reached the United States, they were left alone for a while at a hotel, but this didn’t work out since they knew nothing about this country. They were kicked out of the hotel and had to stay with Mr. Bernstein, who was not happy because he liked living his single man life. Soon they started training with the USC Pitching coach, Mr. Tom House. They did this for a few months before trying out for the Major League Baseball teams in front of many people. The first tryout was awful due to the stress of the situation. Mr. Bernstein was not happy about this, but because of this he learned a big life lesson. The lesson he learned was that Dinesh and Rinku were actual people with feelings. They were not just a job, and they should not have been treated like that. They were eventually offered a second chance to tryout because J.B. Bernstein fought for them. This time they let their guard down and enjoyed the …show more content…
They also didn’t quit when the going got tough once they were in the United States and they took self-confidence. The theoretical development of self-confidence is to trust in your own capabilities and judgement. Self-confidence is believing in one’s own self so that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Once goals are reached, people’s self-confidence tends to grow and their goals become bigger. The theoretical development of motivation is an important force for initiating and maintaining goal-oriented behaviors. When we are motivated, it feels easier to take steps towards our goals. Motivation is different for everyone. What motivates one individual may not motivate another. Motivation can be situational and dependent on the person, however if one is not motivated then nothing happens and nothing gets achieved. The Million Dollar Arm portrayed both appropriate and inappropriate strategies throughout the movie. J.B. Bernstein started using inappropriate strategies when teaching the teens how to play baseball without letting them enjoy what they were
“If you build it, he will come” (Kinsella 1). These words of an announcer jump start a struggle for Ray Kinsella to ease the tragic life of Shoeless Joe Jackson. Ray hears a voice of an announcer which leads him to build a baseball field that brings Shoeless Joe Jackson onto the field. However, this field puts his family on the verge of bankruptcy which is just one of the struggles Ray Kinsella is presented in his life. Shoeless Joe Jackson is no stranger to having no money, as he was only making a measly $1.25 as a kid struggling to support his family. He never attended school and was illiterate throughout his entire life. The struggle is completely the same with Ray Kinsella growing up, as he is forced into baseball, which ultimately makes him run away from home. Ray’s hate is Joes love. Joe loves baseball and makes it to the major leagues, but it doesn’t last. Joe’s career is cut short due to the fact he is accused of throwing the World Series, and banned from baseball forever. Rays’s father would have loved it if his son made it to the major leagues because he thought Ray had the potential and talent. However, his only dream was simple, he wanted to play a game of catch with his son, unfortunately, he passed away and he never got to see his son after he ran away. Shoeless Joe Jackson’s death wasn’t any better, as he died guilty of throwing the World Series which was the biggest sports tragedy to date. Tragedies are not uncommon phenomena, Ray Kinsella and Shoeless Joe Jackson have the unfortunate luck to go through a struggle fulfilled and uphill battle in what is suppose to be a wonderful thing, life.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,
A few 8th graders walked into the workout room a few years ago and shared their opinion that they no longer saw the Tigers as the worst team. Now upperclassmen, the movies takes the viewer into the lives of three particular players: O.C. Brown, a 300 lb. lineman whose performance on the field, sadly, doesn’t match the performance in the classroom; Chavis Daniels, a linebacker who is easily agitated, likes to settle things with his fists; and Montrail “Money” Brown, a player who excels both on and off the field and suffered from an, almost, season-ending knee injury.
Most people throughout the world strive for success in each task they take on, and along with this, many reasons contribute to why they succeed or not. If a person does not succeed, they may automatically blame themselves because of their level of strength. Others may blame themselves for not having enough knowledge about what they are trying to succeed at. The real reason that people may not succeed, however, is their lack of determination and happiness throughout his/her journey that is demonstrated in the book Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell.

Also, Bandura focused on self-efficacy. Self-efficacy means that the individual will feel as if they are worthy of the best (Schultz & Schultz, 2013). “People low in self-efficacy feel helpless, unable to exercise control over life events” (Schultz & Schultz, 2013, p. 338). Although Antwone joined the navy, he was still haunted by his past. His models taught him to not enjoy being intimate with anothe...
To continue on there are always two options, just give up or keep on pushing until the goal has been reached. The people that decide to just quit most likely have a fixed mindset, while the people that don’t give up have a growth mindset. Eduardo Briceno discusses that when obtaining a growth mindset, setbacks don’t take a toll on the person, they will continue to press on until the goal has been reached. Briceno’s point is that when you realize that anything is possible, then you bring yourself to new levels. Overall having a growth mindset allows people to complete any realistic goal that they
There are lots of examples of this in the book but here is a good example from Mawi when he ran track. “That summer, I would run at least six days a week and lift weights every other day. I did it, working during the day and training at night. Again, my hard work paid big dividends … I earned all-conference honors.” (115). Mawi joined the high school track and field team. During his sophomore and junior years, Mawi only made marginal progress. He wanted to change that. Mawi knew from his father that if you work hard, you will succeed. As you can see by this quote, Mawi did as his father said and no doubt, he succeeded in getting all-conference honors. Persisting is not just in sports, however, Mawi also worked hard at school. He recalls, “I stayed up night after night, rereading the chapters and reviewing my notes. I would get home from sports at 6 p.m., eat, help out around the house, and study until midnight. Then I would get up at 6 a.m. and do it all over again. The hard work paid off. I often got the highest grade in the class.” (112). As you can see, Mawi also worked hard at school. Mawi took an advanced us history class. He knew that by working hard and persisting, he could get the highest grade in the class. Mawi spent 6 hours studying and reviewing his work. He was committed to earning the highest grade in his class and his hard work paid off. Working hard and persisting is a valuable lesson to learn because it produces positive results. Also, it does not matter whether you are running track or studying for a test, if you work hard at anything and set your mind to it, you will achieve your
Attitude is the key to succeeding in life and living the American Dream. With the right mindset, you can motivate yourself to accomplish almost anything. Barbara Ehrenreich was correct when claiming we “grow up hearing over and over.. “hard work” was the secret o...
The theory of motivation is not simply about individual interest in rewards, but also about the associations a person makes towards expected result, and the contribution one feels he can make towards the outcome. To summarize, the ocean’s eleven was a successful plan due to each of team member’s motivation and valuable contribution that they made towards the common goal.
Self-determination theory is one that assumes all humans are born with an innate drive to better oneself, basically becoming self-actualized, which is referred to as full-functioning. In self-determination theory, or SDT, full-functioning is characterized as “being aware and mindful, acting autonomously…, and pursuing and attaining intrinsic life goals” (Deci, Ryan, and, Guay 2013). SDT describes three autonomous behaviors: intrinsically motivated, extrinsically motivated, and emotionally motivated. SDT also describes three psychological basic needs of every human: the needs for competency, autonomy, and relatedness. The need for competency causes people to try tasks slightly tougher than they can currently manage, in order to improve upon
Self-efficacy is the belief that someone has the inherent ability to achieve a goal. A student who has a high self-efficacy allows himself to believe that he can be successfully academically.(Bozo & Flint, 2008) He believes that a challenging problem is a task that can be mastered This student is more committed to work in the classroom. (Schunk,1991). On the other hand, a student who has a low level of self-efficacy is likely to be academically motivated. He is more likely to avoid a task that is difficult, give up, make excuses, or lose confidence in his abilities (Margolis & McCabe, 2006). This failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Teachers need to find ways to motivate these students by increasing their self-efficacy.
As a persons behavior is repeated and actually effects the desired change a person is providing reinforcement of their confidence in their competence at effect the desired change. The person is energized by the concept of self-efficacy and it’s feeling of empowerment. (White, 1959). Empowerment and control are essential to elements to self-efficacy. According to Bandura, early social learning theory of behavioral change... ...
