Critique paper Maureen E. Wilson is the author for Teaching, Learning, and Millennial Students. Her intent is to alert College and University educators and faculty on the challenges to be faced with regards to education and Millennial students. College and University educators and faculty attempt to make education unique in a way that grabs the millennial attention. They need to enhance their curriculums using creative environments that use technology and avoid the traditional lecture type classes. The creation of study groups and learning partners creates friendships and trust amongst Millennial students. Wilson goes on to mention that the millennial need to learn to transition from their high school mentality where they barely studied to finding the appropriate length of to study time. All through this principle she [Wilson] continues to stress the need for student faculty interaction and the impact that it has on the students. She continues to deviate from the subject to go back to the first principle. The highlight of the Active Learning principle is that she recommends that instead of having lectures, discussions allow Millennials to remember what they have learned. To get them involved in class discussions, faculty needs to associate their material with the millennial experiences. This method allows them to retain what they have learned. Also, using other innovative techniques to keep them involved and engage is another method the faculty can use to educate them. The study was only sent to 402 students in a New England University via email. Of the 102 students that answered the survey, 74 were females and 18 were males. As a byproduct of the change in college culture, it will create a “friendlier” environment for first generation. Students need to feel safe rather than out of place. Additionally, prestigious institutions need to take initiative to create new programs that will make college a painless transition for first generation students by implementing new policies such as mentors or clubs. As many colleges and universities have not taken the initiative to help first-generation students, North Carolina State University is one of the few exceptions. As a fellow first generation college student at North Carolina State University, I have reaped many benefits from the different organizations they have around campus. Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Walking down to the elementary, the place where we grew up. Wondering what has changed, if anything has changed. Telling jokes to lighten the mood and shooting our opinions back and forth about what this next generation would be like. Whether they would be as rowdy as our current classes are or more quiet and to themselves. Maybe, all of this new technology would be pressed on to them. Will the students be able to get down to work when told or will they barely be able to focus. We even thought that the students might resemble a senior class. The kids will probably even react how a normal highschooler will when offered a reward for their hard work. This next generation seemed more ready to learn when we entered the classroom, due to the fact that they didn’t even glance in our direction or look away from what they were learning. Just them not being distracted from a special guest entering the room showed us that the next generation of students were ready for what came their way. These reactions proved that this subculture was the right choice.
Generation Z is determined to change the future and is at an advantage over all previous generations to do so. This group is those born between the years 1995 and 2012, whom are currently ages 4 to 21. Statistics show Gen Z is extremely mature for their age with the lowest levels of drug use, alcohol consumption, smoking, and teenage pregnancy in decades, as stated by JWTIntelligence. This demonstrates that they are future orientated. Generation Z is unified, diverse, realistic, and technologically advanced, making them the generation with the power to impact the world.
Today’s generation is like no other. The nation as a whole has completely evolved from past times, with technology being one of the greatest improvements.
