Media plays a big part the routine of everyday life. Images, shows, commercials, music and radio all play a big role in life. Such a big role that it effects perspective and persuades people to certain agendas and messages that is not always clears out right. How do messages get across? Visual imagery and subliminal and supraliminal persuasion are three theories that play a big role in what is affecting everyday thought processes. Supraliminal persuasion happens when something viewed or heard subconsciously persuades a person to act in a certain manner or influence a decision. This is often confused with subliminal messaging. In the case of Miley Cyrus, there is a video that talks about her transformation and her use as a sex promoter. In “Miley Cyrus: Perverted Sex Pusher?” the narrator talks about Cyrus’ transformation from Disney sweetheart to a corrupting influence. The narrator talks about Miley Cyrus’ “We can’t Stop” music video popularity, which was called “subversive, mesmerizing, unhinged” in an entertainment news magazine. He goes on to define subversion to make a point that her music is corrupting the youth in using drugs and being sexually promiscuous (“Miley Cyrus”). GoodFight ends each of the videos to a more positive look, directing and calling to people to turn to Christ, using scripture. How are you influenced by what you see around you—by images in magazines, in advertisements, in films, in music, and in TV? It seems these days that we are influenced by media and everything in America. Magazines make us want to lose weight and be like the girl in the pictures, which makes be somebody we are not and buy things we do not need. Advertisements and TV are about the same, they make you want things you do not have and eventually buy the product or service. TV shows us how things are in TV life, which a lot of the time is not real.

In addition, the media “helps to maintain a status quo in which certain groups in our society routinely have access to power and privilege while others do not” (Mulvaney 2016). For instance, both in the music and pornographic industry the female body is perceived as a sexual object. Persuasion is a process by which the persuader, through communication, gains the approval or support for the topic (Let's Compare Motivate and Persuade, 2013). The arguments to motivate this change in thinking comes through careful use of rhetoric, but one must also be able to define the six principles of persuasion in social psychology: “Reciprocity, Scarcity, Authority, Commitment and Consistency, Consensus, and Liking” (McLean, 2010, p. 521) and be able to recognize them as they are taking place. Then, one must carefully apply these concepts in order to find the means to effectively facilitate persuasion (p. 518).
The issue of the relationship between the mass media and the popular culture has always been a controversial issue in social sciences. The political economists insist on the role of the media industry in the creation of this phenomenon of the twentieth century. Though, advocates such as John Fiske, argue that popular culture is actually the creation of the populous itself, and is independent of the capitalist production process of the communication sector. Basing his argument on the immense interpretive power of the people, Fiske believes that the audience is able to break all the indented meanings within a media message. He also believes- by giving new meanings to that specific message they can oppose the power block that is trying to impose its ideology to the public. Consequently, this anarchistic activity of the audience creates the popular culture as a defence mechanism. Even when we accept Fiske’s ideas, we can not disregard the manipulative power of the media and its effects on cultural and social life.
The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.
Persuasion is a commonly used communication technique that allows us to socially influence a certain topic positively or negatively. Its purpose is to help affirm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude. Sometimes the exact topic is very detectable in communication such as during debates but other times it displayed a little more subtly. Persuasion is more than just verbally speaking. Non-verbal communication such as body language, tone and pitch of the voice can also add to the affirmation of the topic. The setting and location also help encourage the acceptance of what is being persuaded.
As civilization grows and the tentacles of mass media stretch into mankind’s mind from every direction, it is important to note the damaging effects of the images being shown to the masses. In a society where the model being used to sell products to the consumer is on average 20% thinner than the demographic of the consumers themselves (Abraham 3), it’s impossible to ignore the influence these marketing campaigns have on individual psyches.
