Miles Morales, a superhero from the famous movie Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse, says that anyone can wear the mask, but can everyone truly be a hero? In the real or the fictional world, a hero is someone who has admirable qualities and experiences that are used to improve the lives of others. Shirley Raines, Beowulf, and Spiderman are all heroes who use their unique qualities and experiences to improve the world and help others. Shirley Raines, the founder of nonprofit Beauty 2 the Streetz in Los Angeles, is a modern hero who uses her compassion and experience to aid the homeless community by providing services and supplies for people in need. Miles Morales is the definition of a hero, a superhero; he fights villains in his city, Brooklyn; helps save his city from destruction, and inspires others …show more content…
Displaying that to be a hero means to overcome one's personal experiences and to use those special qualities and experiences gained to make contributions that positively impact society; Miles Morales, Shirley Raines, and Beowulf are all considered heroes because they rise above their own personal experiences and impact the world positively with their bravery, compassion, and selflessness, sending a positive message out to society, and giving an example of what a good role model is. Shirley Raines is a hero because she improves the lives of those around her using compassion and turns her personal experiences of loss and poverty into something that benefits others in similar situations. When explaining what Raines did for the unseen homeless community, CNN describes, “Raines was making 400 meals a week in her one-bedroom apartment kitchen in Long Beach and driving three times a week to Downtown Los Angeles to feed and bring supplies to people” (CNN
Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
Generally when you think of a hero, who do you envision? Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.
Being a hero means to be willing to risk your life for others. Such as, Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a fantastic football player and he loved playing it too. Despite that, Pat Tillman turned down a 3.6million dollar contract to the Arizona Cardinals to go fight the war against terrorism. He ended up dieing from friendly fire. All this goes to show how brave Pat Tillman was to risk his life and give up his football career to go fight in Afghanistan to help protect the American people. Likewise, the people that helped evacuate New York City after the
A hero is someone who invests their time helping others rather than themselves. They are always conscious of their surroundings and environment. Heroes help their enemies and friends regardless of the circumstances. A hero is also someone who is humble and knows when to be protective of others and themselves. Heroes are people who acknowledge flaws, and fix mistakes, those were my own definition of a hero. In “Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas tells the truth about his illegal status in the United States. Not only was he an immigrant in the United States, he was his own hero. Vargas proved that he is a hero through code switching, bravery and honesty.
A hero is an extraordinary person whose caring, kindness, and perserverence changes the world for the better. Most heros live basic lives, but changes an ordinary situation into an amazing one. Jane Goodall faced difficulties but her willingness to strive led her to outstanding oppurtunities. If it was not for the obstacles she faced and her desire for success, she would not be the person that she is today. Jane Goodall redefined what it meant to be a social justice hero with her worldwide know efforts to protect the chimpanzee community.
On the way to their prom, there was a horrific car crash. 20 teens exited their white stretch limo to help the people that were hurt. They worked together as a team to evacuate the cars and bring people to safety. Once everyone was taken care of and everyone was safe, the teens continued on to their prom to enjoy their night. All of the teens that helped save the victims of the car crash are heroes. What is a hero? There are many different types of heroes. Whether it is a teacher that helps a child realize what they wanted to be in life or a firefighter that saved someone from a burning building. A hero is someone that would risk everything to save only one person. A role-model that everyone should aspire to be. Not someone that manipulates
Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
Over the course of time, there have been many distinct heroes with significant characteristics. A hero can be viewed and described many different ways depending on the person. They may be courageous, intelligent, kind, tough, or even troublesome. However, the more common ‘hero’ is revered to be physically brave and intellectually smart. Although one may be intellectually smart, that is not truthfully what makes them a hero. A hero is someone who sacrifices themselves for the benefit of others and is courageous and brave.
Maya Angelou once remarked, “I think that a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.” Depending on who the inquiry is posed to though, diverse answers may result from the question of, “what is a hero?” I believe that a hero is someone who inspires through their phenomenal precedents, benevolent behaviors, and possesses qualities not ordinarily seen in our culture. Angelou aspired to convey the idea that kindness and heroism are not mutually exclusive, but instead fit together effectively to produce the heroes held in high regard in our society. No matter what one might admire about a certain hero-- bravery, patience, or strength-- kindness lacks not in these traits, but rather encompasses them. For why
An English proverb states, “ A hero is a man who is afraid to run away”. I agree with this proverb, because when you see a hero in a comic book, they have super cool back stories, are not afraid to fight, and stare danger in the face and not blink. They are not afraid of anything. That’s nice to look up to, but they are not real. Our definition of a hero is too much for one man to become, you can do something honorable, heroic, but you will never actually be a hero because it's too much, in real life. Heroes don’t just do it so they can get paid, or respect. What really determines whether someone is a hero is if they choose to do something about it in a bad situation. We have people that do heroic acts, for example, people putting their lives before others. Those people cannot be heroes because they get paid to do it, they are, firefighters, cops, and military, they get paid to help people, so they aren't considered a hero.
What is a hero? Is it an individual that saves lives? A person that does good in the world? Or do you simply think of your mom as a hero? In everyday life we encounter heroes, whether it is a policeman or even a librarian. A person doesn’t need to save the world, or be like Superman in order to be considered a hero. It can be the simplest thing from you helping somebody open their locker to holding the door open for someone as they pass. Andrew Carnegie was the hero of his time, with his benevolence and goodwill. Carnegie was a hardworking boy pushing through poverty to help his family. His intelligence and wisdom helped him evolve into a philanthropist. Later in life he became the richest man of his time era. Still with all his riches and

Miles Morales, a young African American, and Puerto Rican boy, is in a confusing stage of his life. Miles Morales is a young African-American and Puerto Rican teenager living through the complexities of being a teenager while also having to carry on the torch left by Peter Parker. Miles is dealing with an identity crisis as he is dubious of himself, unable to fit in as a normal teenager and shouldering the responsibility of Peter Parker. Miles must overcome his equivocal mind as he sees all the injustice and racial profiling and uses his powers to overcome these threats and become resilient to external powers. Jason Reynolds shows how conflicts develop Miles' character into a dubious teenager and transform him into a resilient superhero.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
