Murder is the pragmatic view of people who are in favor of disposing abortions; however, many people like the political cartoonist, Mike Lane, argue that abolishing abortions will only stop the safe ones. He targets the lawmakers by mocking that if abortions become illegal, women will rely on repulsive criminals to do the job for them; proselytizing wealthy women into dirty, deceiving decisions. Mike Lane makes his argument apparent by: using artwork as visuals, mocking the ongoing controversy, and making his audience analyze the true message. Some men will do anything to make money and take advantage of women, regardless of the circumstances. The man in the cringe-worthy comic says “abortion clinic closed? I can help you right here” as the mouse assistants adds “no appointment needed!” Desperation for money and a woman’s attention is portrayed in every aspect of the man. His filthy appearance displays that he his trashy, and can be interpreted as a low-life scum who is offering to shove a hanger up her vagina voluntarily with no appointment necessary! In contrast, the woman appears wealthy and well-to-do; however, she is willing to go to extensive time and effort to get an abortion regardless of the man or environment, all because the government wants to remove the safe abortions. Environment can play a major role in depicting a character: the sewer and the repulsive man represents the circumstances of where the abortion would take place and the criminal performing it; in comparison to a sanitary doctors office and a doctor who went to school for many years to perform this duty. The man is literally underground which the sign, Underground Medicine Inc. supports, and he is also literally underground. “Underground” is a idiom that represents illegal activities meaning that illegal abortions have existed in the past, and it will continue to exist, just unsafely and unaware.
