Mike Keefe is a political cartoon artist for cagle cartoons, if you look at all his drawings you can see he is not for nor against a specific person, but he recognizes the situations people are being put in. The drawing of the statue of liberty with a pink hat on, signifies the unity with the current women's marches taking place all over the united states. The issue it seems to be addressing is the lack of respect the current president of the united states has shown towards women and how it has brought citizens of all genders, races, and religions together as one to support the rights that women in the world hold. The first cartoon is with Theodore Roosevelt wearing hunting gear and holding a gun. There’s bull sitting on the moon reading the newspaper. There are different names for this political cartoon, like don’t shoot, I’ll come down, the beef trust and et cetera. This cartoon was made when TR was “trust busting” small corporations. After Jungle by Upton Sinclair, people and TR wanted changed. So changes were made and the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1907, which made sure that inspections are made before meats are processed and ready to be delivered.
A noticeable symbol in the piece is how the roles are reversed the Aboriginal man being the minority and the European culture being much more prominent in Australia in the 1980s. Specifically, the artist is able to mock President Harry Truman, Senator Joseph McCarthy, and The Committee of Unamerican Activities(HUAC). The silhouette is known as the Atlantic slave trade and Kara does not seem to shy from the pictures that are so to say pronographic to the viewer. Therefore, the message she wants to pass across is that slavery, racism, and sexual exploitation done on the black was real. In 1941, the Canadian government came to Walt Disney and asked for a short timed cartoon to raise war bonds sales, so Walt Disney recreated his classic, “The Three Little Pigs” into, “The Thrifty Pig”. The film was released November 19, 1941 by Walt Disney Productions. Disney used this recreation to promote the people of Canada to conserve their money so more war bonds could be bought by their parents so the “Wolf” will not get them (The Encyclopedia of Disney Animated Shorts).

The cartoon shows the famous Bread March that happened on October 5, 1789. This cartoon depicts the women marching from Paris to Versailles. The flag the women are holding is a fictional flag that says “Blood or Bread”. The crossed pike and baguette symbolized how serious women needed bread to feed their children. The steak stick in the middle means that they would kill to get bread. There was an estimate of 6,000 women that were involved in the march. They walked 13 miles in the rain to get to Versailles for bread. After they went to King Louis XVI in the Palace of Versailles, they brought back the king and queen back to Paris which became there “prison”. All of these events had happened all during the French Revolution and during the Enlightenment.
She uses ceramic media, cloth, numerical symbolism, historical significance, sexuality, anatomy, and intricateness in a talented way to lure the viewer to her exhibit. All of the different styles and colors presented uniformly symbolizes the individuals within a collective group of feminists. Chicago did a tasteful job in regard to balancing the feminist “we” and incorporating individual diversity of the women featured in the exhibit. An issue that I have with Chicago’s work is that it is labeled “feminist art”. I am sure that in the 1970s it was empowering and gained positive attention for a feminist movement, but today I feel that it is very obviously an exhibit to honor and represent women. The mere fact of labeling art a “feminist work” takes away from the artist and dilutes the message. Its reminds me of the of the ongoing debate we discussed in lecture on whether a skilled female writer should be labeled a “good woman writer”, to bring awareness to the reader that the writer is female, or a “good writer”, to not mention gender because it is irrelevant. Labeling a good writer a “good female writer”, because they also happen to be female, belittles all women as writers. The same goes for “feminist artists” and “feminist artwork”. I understand the motive to have a feminist “we” to create a movement, but I am hesitant to say that labeling something as a “feminist X” is a
