A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s shortest, but one of the most influential comedies. Once produced, his play influenced many forms of media. It was motivation for musicians from Berlin to the United States. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is composed of dreamlike fantasies, mistakes, and a twisted form of humor in comedy. Written in 1595 and early 1596, Shakespeare transforms this play into an unrealistic approach on love and society, promising surprise and wonder for the audience.

Physical attraction was connected to their love towards one another. The attraction to beauty ties into how intense love can be. One of the ideas of the play is that real love is much more than a physical attraction. In a different point of view, however, the audience is forced to consider what an apparently irrational and whimsical thing love is or can be. The dream-like setting helps the audience explore this point. Especially how intense love can be at such a young age. A Midsummer Night's Dream implies that marriage is the true fulfillment of romantic love. All the damaged relationships have been sorted out at the end of Act IV. The triple wedding at the end of this act symbolizes a solutions for the romantic problems that have surrounded the two young couples from the beginning. Shakespeare makes a gendered argument in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Both Lysander's and Demetrius's madness can be explained by their enchantment. However, Hermia and Helena differ. Shakespeare argues that women are subjected to a different view of reality including when it comes to love. Shakespeare also questions some stereotypes about traditional gender roles. Mostly directed to instances when it involves romance. For example, while men are usually expected to be aggressive and women are expected to remain gentle and fragile. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the male character’s reign is supreme and they cast their dominance over the female characters and through their acts of violence. They aim to hold a maintaining control over the fairer sex. The union of Theseus and Hippolyta was inflicted by his violence that led to her injuries. As a result of being treated invaluable than the sum of their parts, the female characters in Midsummer Night’s Dream learn to place emphasis on their physical bodies.
