Throughout middle school, I have had so many great memories. Unfortunately, I only have enough time to just name a few. Many of my friends have helped me through the wonderful experience of middle school. Some of the events ended up having a negative outcome in the end. A few of the occurrences that have happened were being involved with sports, making close friends, and being involved in JHS and CAP/SADD. Playing sports is a huge part of my life. The sports that I am involved in include cheer, track, and gymnastics. I only do two of these sports through the school, and the other one is only a few minutes away from my house. I have always been a very active and energetic person, so I cannot imagine my life without these sports. They make
sports I play and take it beyond that to practice it during my free time to be the best I can.
Sports are a crucial part of an individual 's character. Counter arguments made against having sports at schools are getting more and more public. The arguments make people, think again about having students play sports. Sports are useful because they give players skills they can use on and off the field: strength, leadership, and confidence.
I’ve always been the type of person that truly enjoys athletics and have participated in nearly all sports offered to me. I started playing sports in elementary with club softball and basketball. As I entered my middle and high school years I was able to add the school sanctioned sports to my list of activities. This afforded me the opportunity of competing in volleyball, basketball, golf, track and softball. The camaraderie and life lessons of sports seemed invaluable to me.
The very small percentage of athletes that can make a living off of a sport that they love to do, is a very special thing. The phenomenal athletes that can make that happen are role models for children, teens, and some adults. Sports enthusiasts will quote things from the best leaders, motivators and competitors to share with their children, students, colleagues, and fellow athletes. Being a three sport athlete has given me the full experience of being around those tremendous athletes. I thoroughly enjoy playing sports, I have since I was a little boy, and sports are a huge part of my family. Young students today that are going through the middle school system are between the ages of 10 to 15 years old. They are going through a crucial stage of life in which many alterations occur such as emotional, physical, and mental changes. All of these changes that they must go through are essential to develop into healthy, fully functional, and self-actualized people. As a future educator, I need to see that middle school students are unique; they are too old to be considered children and too young to be considered adolescents. Middle level professionals have certain roles and responsibilities as it relates to the development of young adolescents. We must present ourselves as role models for the students and have the responsibility to make sure that as they progress through middle school they have enriched, meaningful learning experiences through challenging, exploratory, integrative, and relevant curriculum. As a future educator, I need to understand and recognize these changes, strengths, weaknesses, and diversities and be able to plan accordingly and appropriately for them in the classroom. I have developed my own philosophy for teaching at the middle level, based on this evidence and my understanding about the unique characteristics of middle level adolescents that will help mold me into a great middle school educator!
I completed my fifteen hours of observation in Dowdell Middle Magnet School. I observed five teachers. The subjects I observed were Math and Science. Each Teacher I observed has a different style of teaching and handles situation differently.
I enjoy sports a whole lot. sports is an enjoyable way to spend time outdoors. Sports that I like are fishing, football,and baseball.
I have a very active lifestyle resulting in a wide variety of interests outside of the classroom. I have always had a deep life-long passion for sports. I represented my high schools varsity volleyball and basketball teams as well as partaking in an adult slow-pitch softball league throughout high school and into college. Other sports and activities I enjoy include Tae-kwon-do, soccer, fast-pitch softball, tennis, callisthenic and weighted workouts, running, hiking and biking.
I have throughout my whole life been playing sports. I still play basketball competitively and now it’s at the university level. Basketball though was not my first love when it came to playing sports. It has though become my true focus since junior high school. Coming from Canada everybody plays hockey. Its almost as if as soon as you learn to walk you learn how to skate. Whether it is at the recreation centre or at the shinny rink around the corner everyone plays. Eventually I abandoned hockey to play basketball which I have done so for the last twelve years of my life and hopefully a few more years into the future.
I have been involved with sports my whole life. I have been a student athlete since I was in fifth grade. I played softball, volleyball, and basketball. However, for awhile I was more of an athlete rather than a student. I could perform on the court, but not in the classroom. Not being able to perform in the classroom resulted in my parents removing me from any sport like activities until I was able to get my grades up. However, once I started to get better grades, they allowed me to continue playing sports until I started to veer off into the wrong direction again. When being a student athlete at any level, it is important that you keep the same level of motivation that you have on the court in the classroom. Although playing sports can be a thrill, a majority of student athletes do not play their sport for a career. In theory, it all comes down to getting good grades, getting a degree, and living a successful life.
Young adolescents can be described as ages 10-15 years old, but it is also considered that adolescence continues until the age of 25. During this time in an adolescent’s life there are many internal and external factors that affect the development of each individual. The influence that an adolescent’s peers, parents, and community have on them can be conflicting and therefore cause stress. Trying to meet the expectations of others during a time where one is going through so many forms of physical, psychological, and cognitive development can be trying for a middle school aged student. They are expected to focus on their education and the expectation of other outside influences while their bodies are growing and developing into an adult body. When development happens differently for these kids it can affect their psychological development if they focus too much on how fast, or slow they are developing in comparison to their peers. Some adolescents may let their peers influence their behaviors creating a problem with how they interact with others, or how they view themselves as a person. The middle school is a place where students are guided through these developmental experiences with the help of their peers, teachers, administrators, parents and community.
How many sports do people play in high school? Throughout my high school career, I have played three sports, (basketball, baseball, and track) for my first three years and four sports, (Basketball, Baseball, Track, and football) for my last year. Playing multiple sports throughout my career has kept me in shape. I have also made many good memories playing sports during this time. The only thing that I wish I could change is playing four sports all four years of high school so I could make many more memories with my friends. Playing sports is such a great thing to do through high school, they get to stay in shape while playing a sport they love. Although people will argue that it is hard, sports should be something everyone participates in.
I can say that high school is very different than college and that this was expected because obviously they are two different levels of education. I can say the concept of high school is the same as college. For example, go to school, study and pass. Sounds easy, but trust me, it is not. Another factor worth mentioning is that students in high school are pampered compared to students in college. I am saying this because I am feeling the difference myself as I finish my first term. This is where my high school experience kicks in. As my first semester comes to an end, I noticed the way I use to get things done in high school are not the same as when I got stuff done in college. There are three reasons that can contribute to why my high school experience did not prepare me for college. The three major ways that my high school experience did not prepare me for college were by not preparing myself to be fully responsible, manage my time, and determining who I wanted to be.
If you were to ask my friends what I love to do, my guess is that the majority of them would come up with this reply, "He loves to play sports". Sports are a big part of my life, and if I had to choose my favorite sport to play it would have to be basketball. I couldn't imagine going a week without being able to touch a basketball, and I thought I would never have to. But on one summer afternoon, that all changed when I broke my leg. It left me on crutches for two months, and not being able to play basketball all that summer. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad, getting all the attention and sympathy from everyone. However, after one game I soon realized that I would do just about anything to get rid of those horrible crutches and get back on the court.
The benefits of sports range from physical, mental, and social. Exercise keeps people fit, develops healthy muscle tone, and reduces heart and lung problems (Oak, Manali). Sports studies have shown that “youth are motivated and engaged in ways that do not happen regularly in any other parts of their lives. Their experience of sports stands out from nearly all other activities, including socializing and schoolwork, in providing enjoyment where they are exerting concerted effort toward a goal” (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). People who play sports bond over a common interest. This opens up children to meeting new kids and socializing with many more. In Kindergarten, I played baseball. Even though I did not truly understand all the mechanics of the game, I met new friends and began to develop motor skills. This was very useful starting at an early age and pushed me to stay active throughout my life.
