Mid-term Reflection As long as I can remember, my whole childhood I have known what I wanted a career in. I have always wanted to be some type of nurse, this influence came from my mother, who is a nurse and inspired me to also become one. In ACA I learned this still might be the right step for me. As we have went on in the semester we have learned what our personality type is and what are learning skills are revolved around. Mine deals best with complex communication and problem-solving in times of stress. My personality also includes being hard-working, which is a helpful tool as it takes very good grades and a bachelor's degree or higher to get to my career goal. As I have hit sophomore year, I have specified my career choice a little bit more and decided to become a neonatal nurse. I have learned in this class not to just trust facts online, but to go to the campus I am thinking of going to and visiting the campus grounds as well so I can get the full effect of it before I apply.
For my perfect college it would be either medium or small in size, so I won’t feel as surrounded or cornered in my learning environment, for cause of further anxiety problems, which I will have to learn to control and am working on it. The next part of college that would fit me individually would have to be low or average cost, due to the fact my family isn’t that wealthy and I would probably have to pay for most myself. Before I started attending ACA, during the summer I knew I wanted to go to Lees-Mcrae, but now that we have researched more in class I learned, I would prefer Duke University over it due to the budget costs, and graduation rate. When I enter college though, whether it is perfect for me or not, the challenges i’m going to face will still be greatly difficult. My anxiety is lessening, but it is still there and it keeps me from being as open and talkative as I would like to be, causing me to probably be more of a loner and not as for as much help as others with the same questions as me. The other obstacles I will face as I become a college student will be all the assignments and papers that will be due on a specific time and I will have to reign back on my procrastination and get them done, and done efficiently. I want to have a great college experience, one that I will remember for all the good memories and none of the bad. I will be surrounded by that certain college or university's college culture and I will most likely have to adapt to it. College culture is the atmosphere the campus creates and the clubs and such it is composed of. Duke University has everything I am looking for and I hope I get accepted when I apply. It will give me a chance to interact with new and different people, not just the same people I see in this small town everyday. It will also help me start being more mature and ready for life after my education is over.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
I want to go to college for the wholesome intellectual stimulation and to get more involved with my community. College will be my last opportunity to do so before I enter the work force. At college I can be intellectually and academically challenged; I will be able to learn with friends who are as dedicated to learning and the pursuit of knowledge as I am. My goals in college are to acquire the skills that I need to lead a successful and productive life, to expand my knowledge of the world, to step out of my comfort zone, and to become more proactive.
The goal of my learning plan for this semester is to develop skills in health education specific to adolescents. I chose this as my learning goal because my placement this semester at Sunnybrook Hospital, Injury Prevention Program, gives me an opportunity to provide health education to high school students every Tuesday at out P.A.R.T.Y. Program so I thought I should use this opportunity to develop my and improve my nursing skills in this area. As well as good health education skills to adolescents can benefit the students by proving them a motivating learning environment and better learning outcomes. I hope they can enjoy my teaching and absorb the information and use them in the future. I have considered many factors in the process of developing my learning plan such as the nursing standards of health promotion, prevention and health protection, professional relationships, capacity building etc… I brainstormed possible topics such as possible topics that are related to injury prevention itself for example, concussion prevention or preventing sports related injuries. I also thought about doing topics that are relevant specifically to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program such as teenage suicide and prevention or distracted driving. After assessing my placement and the clients which in this case are the students, I have recognized that one of the program’s goals is to educate the students about injuries and injury prevention. I also found that our clients had a lot of potential in learning about this subject which can greatly benefit their lives and influence change in their behaviour to increase control of their own health and make better choices. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. 1. As I grew up, I never really knew what career path I wanted to take. The thought that scared me was that whatever I did decide to choose, it was going to be what I would do for the rest of my life. When my freshman year in college came around, I majored in nursing. However, I never was fully certain that nursing was something that I truly wanted to pursue. I felt like the only reason I chose nursing to begin with was because my mother is a nurse. I thought about it for a while and realized that I shouldn’t choose nursing as my major just because my mother is a nurse, instead, I needed to choose a major because I have a real compassion and desire for it.
I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. For the last 2.5 years, I have been enjoying my nursing practice as a Diabetes Educator for Endocrinology Department in the VA Medical Center proudly helping those who have served us. Subsequently, my current the position required certification to assure thorough and adequate care with provision of knowledgeable resources. Hence, very quickly I realized that a multidisciplinary approach mirroring the concept of a robust coalition has valuable ramification in the health care system while striving for outstanding patient care. The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
