The third concrete experience that was the most favourable was reading the case files on service users whom I wanted to know more about. I found this beneficial for my understanding of their needs, behaviours, characteristics and home life. Although I did not get to find out the type of intellectual disability, this supported my learning so that I could get to know service users better and link their behaviours so that I what seen during interactions. By engaging in Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological perspective, I learnt from my experience the importance of the microsystem. The microsystem refers to the persons most immediate environment (Tannenbaum, R. (2018). Therefore, it may give nurture (Rogoff, 2003) and influence a healthy personality (Swick, 2004). In the level of the microsystem, a child will experience immediate interaction with other people. In the beginning, the system is the child’s home, but as the ages it begins to involve more people. For Kurt Fuchel, his microsystem began when he was a child living in Vienna Austria. Fuchel’s birth parents represents his primary microsystem, they had a direct impact of Kurt’s life. “My parents were sort of middle - class people, and my father was a middle-level bank manager and my mother, a lady of leisure.... This model contains several layers; the inner most layer is called the microsystem, then comes the mesosystem, the exosystem, and the macrosystem. Working with the clients at Silver Saddle, facilitating anger management group and being able to identify the clients needs have been the greatest experience that has had a large impact on my learning. Working with clients helped me set a professional standpoint while maintain healthy boundaries with my clients, which is something I struggled with because I wanted to be more like a mom to the clients. My microsystems are consistency of relationships that have brought meaningful influences over a long or short amount of time. To describe each system more accurately, I two different types of lines. I drew broken lines for weakened relationships over the time. In contrast, I drew thicker lines over critical relationships even to the present day. My parents have been fully present throughout my life. They are my key caregivers and support me financially, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. My younger brother is my only sibling who I consider to be my oldest friend and whom I have given care as well when we were younger. Our relationship has weakened due to physical distance, but we still emotionally depend on each other. The Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory focuses on how ones environment can affect a person’s development. It focuses on 5 main areas namely the Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem and Chronosystem (Bronfenbrenner, 1977, p. 514-515). When examining the microsystem environment of Ricky, which involves the individuals on a daily basis (Garbarino, 1982, p. 22), the individuals within his family include Mr. Garcia, Mrs. Garcia, and his two younger siblings. Also included would be his friends or classmates at school, his teacher, and social worker. The case mentioned that the Garcia’s are very close with their extended-kin family, mentioning specifically Ricky’s cousins, so they would be an additional factor in Ricky’s microsystem. Any other neighborhood friends of Ricky’s would also be included. Ricky’s mesosystem environment looks at the relationships that occur between his microsystems (p. 23). In this case, this would be the relationship between Ricky’s school and home, and also his neighborhood and home. Additionally, Mrs. Garcia has a strong relationship with the school social worker, which connects his family to his school environment. The exosystem, which are circumstances that effect the individual even though they do not play a direct role in the relationships (p. 23), would include Mr. Garcia’s job, the local government, the mass transit available to the family, and the mental health services available. My first opportunity to work in the social work field came as I gained employment with Tobias House Attendant Care. Working with a diverse group of men (18 – 72 years of age) as a personnel support worker. In the case of the young men (who were transitioning from Bloorview Children’s Hospital), my role was defined as a life skills coordinator and my job entailed teaching these men how to navigate self-directed care. This involved working with the young individuals on how to navigate a life with limited institutional support. This included (but not limited to) teachings around banking practices, hygiene, social interactions, support equipment maintenance, monthly budgeting and research into beneficial programs (education, grants, sources of income other than ODSP).
