Medal of Honor Recipient

Lt. Michael P. Murphy was the leader of a four man SEAL reconnaissance team that secretly infiltrated in the Hindu-Kush Mountains on June 27, 2005. He then was ambushed on the 28th of June by Taliban forces. He climbed into the open onto high ground to make and electronic phone call for help. One member of the team escaped before he was killed. Murphy’s remains were found during a combat search and rescue on July 4, 2005.
Lt. Michael P. Murphy was awarded the MOH on October 27th, 2007. He is the first Navy recipient sense Vietnam. Lt. Michael Murphy also got a Silver Star, Purple Heart, Combat action ribbon, and Afghanistan campaign Medal.
Some of Lt. Michael P. Murphy’s contributions was being a part of a team dedicated

to fighting the Taliban; he worked to help ensure al-Qaeda terrorists could not train in, nor launch strikes from Afghanistan since their attack on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11th, 2001. After Lt. Murphy Graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Political Science, He turned down two offers to law schools to join the Navy and become a SEAL. He served on missions to Jordan, Iraq two times, Qatar, and Djibouti in East Africa.
The Team the Lt. Michael Murphy was in charge of that deployed in Afghanistan in April 2005 was conducting sensitive missions to capture to capture or kill high valued Taliban target Ahmad Shah, or known as Ismail, when they were then ambushed by overwhelming Taliban forces. A Big firefight started for about 45 minutes, the men fought on, as ammunition ran low. Three SEALs were wounded by gunfire/rocket-propelled grenades. During that fire fight Lt. Michael P. Murphy then courageously climbed to higher ground and into the open to make a call over an electronic phone for help while still fighting. He held off the attackers while exhorting his men to escape.
A Quick Reaction Force immediately mobilized in a Daring Daytime mission to reinforce the SEALs.

Eight SEALs and eight Army Night Stalker commandos died when their MH-47 helicopter was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and then crashed. The four-man SEAL squad courageously fought on and alone. Lt. Michael Murphy, Matthew Axelson and Danny Dietz were killed in the fierce firefight as they provided protective fire that allowed the 4th member of the SEAL squad Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell to escape. Wounded in both of his legs, Luttrell walked several miles and was hidden and protected by an Afghani shepherd until U.S commandos rescued him on July 3, 2005
Lt. Michael P. Murphy is considered for the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions. Lt. Michael P. Murphy is remembered with the greatest respect by his fellow SEALs, the Navy, and our nation.
I chose to do my report on Lt. Michael P. Murphy because his story showed me what a great leader does for his team/squad and he portrays a very honorable and courageous man we should all achieve to be. He will always be a true hero in my eyes and I know he has made an impact in many people’s lives. He shows great leadership skills and shows that he and his 4 man SEAL team were extremely courageous and trained very well.

He will always be remembered for his bravery and his sacrifices. While researching more stuff on him I didn’t know he turned down 2 law school offers to join the Navy to become the most elite a Navy SEAL. His story helps his other BUD/s classmates trying to become the best. One said that he remembers his stress fractures post Hell- Week and limping around with his iron will. Those thoughts will never leave his mind and he said he will further commit himself to our country’s undying freedom.
His personal friend spoke about him also, “we always knew he was a tough son of a bitch, but he was so nice and a gentleman at the end of his radio transmission for help, despite his severe wounds and dire situation, Murphy- ever the officer and gentleman- said, “Thank you”
Lt. Michael P. Murphy will always be one of my hero’s.
