Michael Jordan is known to be one the greatest basketball players of all time. Jordan’s love, passion, and work ethic as an individual and as teammate has bulged him to the top. Even if you don’t like the Chicago Bulls or Jordan himself, just with all the achievements he’s got on and off the court, the man deserves respect. Michael Jordan’s famous sneaker brand “Air Jordan” is one of the most popular brands of all time. A commemoration of his work, “Work Before Glory”, is a sneaker advertisement that screens a timeline of the legacy he left and used to represent his shoes to target fans and all of the basketball lovers.
Throughout the video, Jordan talks about how basketball has impacted his life by showing a variety of clips that correlates

with every sentence he says. This is appealing to logos because between the voice and image of the video we can identify what the message is. In the beginning of the video we see a preview of the shoe and saying how “It’s not about the shoes...” telling us just forget that it’s a sneaker ad and that there is a deeper meaning behind this video. Before the Air Jordan, all basketball shoes were white. Ever since Jordan’s arrival and the start of the Air Jordan franchise, both the game and industry have been changed. The next part of the video says, “It’s about knowing where you’re going. Not forgetting where you started...” showing us a picture of Emsley A. Laney High School gym where it all began for his basketball career. In 1981 Jordan signed to the University of North Carolina and soon became the most important player of the basketball team. In 1982 He won the NCAA Division I championship and scored the final basket needed to defeat Georgetown University. He was also was named as the NCAA College Player of the Year in 1983 to 1984. The next part of the quote states, “It’s about having the courage to fail.
Not breaking when you’re broken...” showing back-to-back clips of him fatigued, falling down, and getting the ball stolen. One of those clips showed us one of the most phenomenal games of all time. It was remembered as the “Flu Game.” Jordan was suffering flu-like symptoms in a tied up best of seven championship series in 97’ against the Utah Jazz. Doctors told him there was no way he could make an appearance in game five. Three hours before tip off; Jordan dragged himself out of bed and made his way to the Delta Center. “From the way he looked, there was no way I thought he could even put his uniform on” teammate Scottie Pippen says. After an inconsistent performance in the first three quarters, it all came down to the wire in the fourth where it was all tied up at eighty-five. With twenty-six seconds left, Jordan pulls up from the three-point line and hits the game winning shot. This part of the video appeals to pathos because it shares a lot of different emotions between the opponent and competitor. Jordan pulled an upset and flustered the Utah Jazz crowd. “I'd have to say this is the greatest game I've seen Michael play. Just standing up was nauseating for him and caused him dizzy spells. This was a heroic effort, one to add to the collection of efforts that make up his legend” as coach Phil Jackson commented after the game. …show more content…
(Weinberg) Jordan had so much courage and perseverance into winning games and titles, appealing to ethos.
Once he finally won the first one he never stopped winning, which leads into the next part of the video where it says “Taking everything you’ve been given and making something better...” showing clips of him winning and holding a trophy. It was an intense part of the video because we see him accomplish something he has worked hard for. Jordan can do anything he wanted on the court, whenever he wanted. He was a great leader because he made sacrifices after another. Jordan was no stranger to adversity, whether it would be from injuries or facing a tough defender. He made six championships, five MVPs, ten scoring titles and fourteen All-Star picks happen and that itself assures his career will last forever (Favale). As for the next couple clips of the commercial, they tell and show us a recap of what has happened. “It’s work before glory. And what’s inside of you. It’s doing what they say you can’t...” showing a clip of him practicing his shot because as it was proved, hard work pays off, and that’s far more important than glory or recognition. Glory will come later on, but without work nothing will come and with Jordan’s determination to win, it just overpowers the people who didn’t believe in
him. It was just all about his mindset into winning and just becoming a better player everyday. According to USA Basketball writer, Dr. T.J. Allan in his article, How Michael Jordan’s Mindset Made Him a Great Competitor, claims that Michael Jordan’s mindset was to have a growth mindset, a mindset where you can be good at anything, because your abilities are entirely due to your actions. In 1993 Jordan walked away from the game of basketball during the pinnacle of his success and risked his career into playing baseball instead. Dr. Allan says it’s psychological because it was a mindset ever since he was in high school, a mindset that stitched on to him from being cut from the basketball team. Jordan wasn’t egotistical at failing anything; he might have become bored with basketball or craved another challenge. Nevertheless, he wouldn't have risked everything if he didn't believe hard work topped it all off. Michael Jordan was a man of character; his positive appearance in the media has notably contributed to Nike’s success. Ever since he signed with Nike his shoes quickly became famous between children across the United States. Some children want the shoes because they idolize Jordan while others believe the shoe will increase their performance and make them a better basketball player. The media, particularly celebrities’ plays a big role into why kids are wearing Air Jordan’s today. Will Smith is seen wearing Air Jordan’s shoes in multiple episodes of 90s television show, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. That being said, the shoe was not only used for playing basketball, it became a fashion statement as well. Once a new pair of Jordan’s came out, people raced to line up outside of stores so to get a pair and be the first ones to rock the latest fashion trend. The meaning of the shoe has changed; the popularity of the shoes today is based mostly on the brand’s name and fashion purpose, and the reason for the popularity in the shoes back then was because of greatness. Nowadays, a kid who wants to buy a new pair of Jordan’s is not attracted to buy the shoe because he idolizes Michael Jordan but because he wants the “coolest” or “nicest” shoes on the market (Badenhausen). Most of the kids who now wear Air Jordan’s may have not got the opportunity to see Michael Jordan play because they were too young at or not even born at the time. They wear Jordan’s because of the significance behind it and just make people feel special because when they put these on they’re a part of history. It’s history that they’re documenting. It’s history that you can wear on your feet. It’s crazy to think how Jordan brand hasn’t fade away or taken over by other players that are on the rise such as Golden State point guard, Stephen Curry. It seems that when an up coming basketball phenomenon becomes the “greatest” in the NBA; their endorsement with Nike will be the new big hit. Today’s Air Jordans continue to build on the franchise’s rich history of innovative design and uncompromising performance. Inspired by the greatest to ever play the game, the franchise continues to lead and shape the athletic footwear industry into the future. As Michael’s legend continues to grow, his legacy in the Air Jordan franchise lives on. The sneaker advertisement dispenses an implicit understanding of the footsteps Jordan took throughout his career. It illustrates a motivational quote by Jordan for the people who look up to him and want to be like him. The shoe is a figure to implement the legacy of Jordan. People want to buy his shoes because he is the icon as the greatest basketball player of all time. Concluding to the final clips and sentences of the quote, we hear again, “It’s not about the shoes. It’s what you do in them...” As we analyzed and found the meaning of this sneaker commercial we found that if you wanted to run or jump higher, a pair shoes won’t make that happen for you, you have to earn it by training hard and be discipline. Jordan was born to be on the courts and being a champion. Some people are just born with natural talent, and Jordan’s was being a legend. Finally, Jordan ends the commercial by saying, “It’s being who you are born to be.”
In the history of business, there has been a clear record of industry heads finding something or someone as a mainstay and bedrock for their respective companies or corporations; there is often a chief product that keeps many businesses afloat, even in the rough times. Apple found it's own in 2001 with the iPod. McDonald's has had the Big Mac since the late 1960s. Nike, however, found their goldmine in a person with Michael Jordan. Walter LaFeber's Michael Jordan and the New Global Capitalism tells the paints the picture of the rise of young Michael Jordan from his middle-class family in racist North Carolina up through college and into the NBA where he becomes an international sports icon. It tells the story of how Jordan catches the eye of Nike's ambitious co-founder and CEO, Phil Knight, and how he was transformed from a young, rebellious black hoopster into the face of a multi-billion dollar transnational corporation while stretching its touch all of the way to the far reaches of Asia. LeFeber's book also delves into the darker issues and topics addressing Jordan and Nike, such as race and sports and how they played a part during scandals that surrounded MJ off of the court along with the growth of Nike abroad and their dealing with technological changes in manufacturing while facing criticism for their labor practices.
In conclusion this is how these two allstars are beyond incredible and this is how they show their talents in different ways. This also shows how American culture has changed a lot. We see how Michael Jordan talent differs from Lebron James talent but they are compared too as both “The best to ever play the game of basketball”.
The Bulls had once again ended up making it to the Finals. The Bulls would split the first four games with the Utah Jazz. Then comes the fifth game of the Finals, which Michael is most famous for the flu game. There are many stories for why Michael looked sluggish on the court, but it was stated as flu like symptoms or the actual flu. Although Jordan was for sure weakened on the court, he rose to the occasion. The Bulls would go on
According to Time magazine,?Jordan was the best player ever to play in the game?. He changed the way basketball was played.
Michael Jordan, what comes to your mind when you hear that name? Michael had played for the bulls and had gotten 6 championship rings with the team. Well, is it just me or does that sound like a lot of time in the game of basketball? In 1982 he took a big step up from highschool to college, where he wanted to pursue the basketball dream. He went to college at North Carolina where he played NCAA basketball for just one year before he was drafted in 1984. All eyes were on him when he went on the court, because that just how good he was at the game of basketball. Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in NBA history, maybe even the greatest of all time.

When I began my report I didn’t know much about Michael Jordan, but I did know that he was “undoubtedly the greatest player in the history of the NBA'; (“Michael Air Jordan'; 1). It seemed like every time I heard the word basketball I also heard the name Michael Jordan. There’s just no avoiding him. If you are watching television you might see him playing basketball or golf. If you were reading a magazine there will probably be an advertisement with his picture. If you were walking down the street you might see a kid wearing Air Jordan shoes or a Bulls jersey with “JORDAN'; on the back of it. This man is probably as recognizable as the Pope.

The "G.O.A.T.", is coming used term in the sports world meaning, The Greatest of All Time. In the National Basketball Association, when you mention the term, the "G.O.A.T., everyone assumes of one name and one name only, Michael Jordan. A decade worth of athletes has had the chance to eclipse Michael Jordan in the minds of the consumer. Yet even out of the spotlight Jordan remains the sports personality with the greatest endorsement chops in the U.S.”( Badenhausen).
The Jordan Brand attempts to communicate to its audience that to become legendary they need to understand that it is not about the shoes, but what it is you do in them. They do this by showing a number of star athletes performing when they were in college and high school to the narrator’s (Michael Jordan) words. This paper hypothesizes how it is the Jordan Brand attempts to bring their audience to the shared rhetorical vision of becoming legendary, through fantasy themes in their ad "It’s Not About the Shoes".
Sunday, June 19th 2016 will be a date that will lay in the hearts of Cleveland sports fans for the rest of their lives. On this day, the Cleveland Cavaliers finished the nearly impossible task of coming back from being down three games to one in the NBA Finals in order to give the city of Cleveland its first professional sports championship in fifty-two years. The team was led by LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and company; together, they made history. After the championship many emotional advertisements came out about the city of Cleveland, but there is one that stands out the most. Nike, who endorse LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, released an emotional advertisement called “Worth the Wait,” targeting those who have been with Cleveland since the

Michael Jordan, portrayed by Jim Naughton in the biography Taking To The Air: The Rise of Michael Jordan, is well regarded as not only the greatest basketball player of all time but also the face of a generation. During the mid to late 1980s NBA basketball was simply treading water. As a result of the lack of a marketable superstar, the NBA was losing popularity to the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Following Jordan’s emergence, the NBA’s attendance rose dramatically and it’s worldwide popularity skyrocketed. Michael Jordan returned basketball to its past popularity in the United States and revolutionized the way the world viewed the game of basketball. (Harriman) Michael Jordan’s life is succinctly depicted in Taking to The Air: The Rise of Michael Jordan. Jim Naughton focuses on Jordan’s influence on worldwide sports and culture as one of the most publicized and marketed athletes of all time. Naughton explains the circumstances in Jordan’s upbringing that gave him the ability to be a humungous star. This biography is examined by Kirkus Reviews. They describe Naughton’s biography: “Besides offering a solid chronological biography and record of Michael Jordan’s basketball career, here Naughton also gives an astute assessment of this superstar’s impact on society.” (“Taking to the Air”) The article in the Kirkus Review explains that this biography investigates Jordan’s impact on marketing while telling the story of his life. Like Kirkus Reviews, I too believe that Naughton’s work goes into great description about Jordan’s upbringing and later career while also examining his cultural impact. Throughout his life, Michael Jordan has topped the sports and entertainment worlds by becoming the greatest basketball pl...
Despite a somewhat desperate childhood, Michael Jordan enjoyed his time at school. He did his first years of schooling at D.C. Virgo Junior High School and later graduated to Lanley High School where he began practicing intensively on his basketball skills. He was accepted in the University of North Carolina through a basketball scholarship. At the university, Michael took on the challenge of driving his teammates to a level of performance that they might never have achieved on their own. He scored the winning basket in the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship game in 1982. A sportswriter describes 'the relentlessness with which Michael Jordan prodded and cajoled the other players in leading them to championship season after championship season' (Lazenby 1996:37).
