Why Michael Jordan is NOT the Greatest Basketball Player
Michael Jordan is widely considered to be one if not the best basketball player of all time, as he has been ranked number one on numerous top ten lists since retiring from the NBA. And why not? With six championships, ten scoring titles, five MVP trophies, a highly praised (and rewarded) defensive ability, and an absurdly marketed brand that has continued to ascend to international fame, his influence over the game is everywhere around the world, as it would be hard for one to escape the name Michael Jordan, regardless of whether they're a basketball fan or not.
But is Michael Jordan actually the greatest NBA player of all time? This is a question I have difficulty answering myself as not only a basketball player but also an avid NBA fan. I would not be hesitant in calling him the greatest all-round scorer of all time, with a career average of 30.1 points a game, there is little doubt that Michael Jordan was, along with Wilt Chamberlain, the most dominant offensive force this game has ever

When a great player leaves their team, the team typically falls apart after the departure, such as when LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010 and also when Shaquille O'Neal left the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004. So when the “greatest player of all time” left the Chicago Bulls after his first retirement, one would imagine that the Bulls would have a failing season with a losing record, but in actuality, led by the defensive grit of Scottie Pippen, the Bulls dropped only two more games than in the previous season. With Michael Jordan in the 92-93 season, the Bulls had 57 wins, and in the 93-94 season without Jordan, they had 55 wins. I am not saying that Michael Jordan is definitively not the greatest NBA player of all time, but there are several other players who could compete for that
Michael Jordan, in his prime, was thought of as one of the greatest basketball champions of all time. A shooting guard, standing at six-six, Jordan was able to out play anyone in his position. He started his career at the University of North Carolina, where he helped his team win a national championship. He then was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984-85 season. While playing for the Bulls, Jordan received many awards such as, MVP, five championships, Olympic gold medals, slam dunk contests, and many more defensive and offensive awards. Jordan simply dominated the nineties and left the game as a NBA Finals winner in 1998.
Michael Jordans talent is so amazing. “Maybe this guy is God disguised”, former Boston Celtic Larry Bird said about Jordans talent. This really shows how people viewed his talent and liked the way he played the game of basketball. Michael Jordans talent is so amazing , he’s so incredible and beyond unreal. The things he did and accomplished in the basketball league shows his true talent. In 1984, at 21 years of age, Jordan made the United States Olympic Games basketball team under coach Bobby Knight. Averaging a remarkable seventeen points a game, Jordan led the team to a gold medal in eight straight wins! The Olympic win brought Jordan to high visibility in basketball circles and made him a household name in America. Jordan continued soaring new heights , even when he fractured his ankle early in the 1...
Unfortunately, the comparison is being made seemingly every day, and the article by Mr. Mathis is full of fallacious material. His extreme uses of exaggeration and card stacking, along with many harsh examples of hasty generalizations, makes a claim that Michael Jordan is and always will be the greatest player to play basketball. An opinion is simply an opinion and anyone is entitled to their opinion, but using fallacies to formulate his response to the issue makes it too finite and too biased in favor of Michael Jordan. There are so many clear and dramatic exaggerations throughout the article. Michael Jordan is described as being “the most unstoppable assassin of all-time, the smartest marketer of all-time” and then sarcastically mentioned as “the savviest shoe salesman of all-time” (Mathis, par. 2).

The other reason why everyone should know mike is that he was the highest paid player in the world basketball in the 80?s and 90?s (?Breaking Sports News?). His contract is worth 30mil sign with the Chicago Bulls in 1984. This breaking news during the 1984-1985 season was all over the sports world excited to see what he can accomplish in this great sport of basketball. Michael Jordan, what comes to your mind when you hear that name? Michael had played for the bulls and had gotten 6 championship rings with the team. Well, is it just me or does that sound like a lot of time in the game of basketball? In 1982 he took a big step up from highschool to college, where he wanted to pursue the basketball dream. He went to college at North Carolina where he played NCAA basketball for just one year before he was drafted in 1984. All eyes were on him when he went on the court, because that just how good he was at the game of basketball. Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in NBA history, maybe even the greatest of all time.
When people think of basketball and the great players that play today we all think of Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, and I mean lets face it we can name players whom play the game very well till we are blue in the face. All these players that were thinking of and naming have something in common which is none of them can compare to what Michael Jordan has done to the game. Some people say he destroyed the game making it that everything people accomplish is compared to what he has done in his career. Which happens when everyone i...
It’s one of the greatest debates right now in modern time sports. Who is the greatest basketball player ever? Is it His Airness, or is it King James? The debate on whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is the greatest basketball player ever is a prevalent topic in sports news daily. Many people believe that LeBron James is the greatest basketball player to be currently playing and also the greatest player to ever have played in the NBA. My theory, however, is that rather than LeBron James, the greatest basketball player to ever have played the game is Michael Jordan. Although I agree with the claim that LeBron James is the best current player in the NBA, I believe that he is nowhere near being considered better than Michael Jordan.
When I began my report I didn’t know much about Michael Jordan, but I did know that he was “undoubtedly the greatest player in the history of the NBA'; (“Michael Air Jordan'; 1). It seemed like every time I heard the word basketball I also heard the name Michael Jordan. There’s just no avoiding him. If you are watching television you might see him playing basketball or golf. If you were reading a magazine there will probably be an advertisement with his picture. If you were walking down the street you might see a kid wearing Air Jordan shoes or a Bulls jersey with “JORDAN'; on the back of it. This man is probably as recognizable as the Pope.
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Due to the mark Michael Jordan has left on the world as the “G.O.A.T.”, it will be very difficult for any player to surpass his legacy. Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and LeBron James all have similarities of Michael Jordan but, out of all three players James is the closest. LeBron has the most similarities and the potential to surpass Michael Jordan’s legacy with his personality, stats and he popularity on and off the court. Even though James has the potential to surpass his legacy, there is still a very long journey ahead of James if he ever wants to be considered the “G.O.A.T.”.
The 1991 season was the start of the first three-peat, the Chicago Bulls led by the face of the franchise, Michael Jordan, had another All-Star caliber player Scottie Pippen. Michael Jordan and the bulls would go on to win their first championship beating the Lakers; he also won his second MVP since 1987 as well as his first NBA Finals MVP. He would go on to win his second MVP award in both the regular season and in the finals, also winning his second NBA Championship. His s...
Magic was a revolutionary point guard, he was the first point guard with legitimate height (6-foot-9) to dominate the game of basketball. Johnson helped lead the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA championships during the 1980s with some help from a great team. Johnson’s court vision was uncanny, and his teams’ fast paced offense played perfectly for his passing abilities.
