The reason behind the huge success of Nike is Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is one of the most iconic athletes in the history of sports. He was the definition of dominance during his time. One of the best decisions of Jordan’s life would have to be signing with Nike. He single handedly made Nike one of most known brands in the world. Even being able to launch his own shoe brand with Nike. A question that might be asked about Jordan could be “What if Jordan didn’t sign with Nike”.
I believe if Jordan was to sign with Adidas instead he would have made Adidas the most well known sports brand in the world. Due to the fact, he was so dominant during his time and was a great role model. Which drew a huge fan base for the Bull’s star. He was able to bring six championships back to Chicago. He was looked up by many young

basketball players which made his apparel sell. Michael Jordan still makes millions of dollars per year after his retirement, because of his Jordan apparel that still sells today. The sports clothing brands would be completely different if Jordan didn’t sign with Nike.
If he was to sign for Adidas he would have brought in the same amount of money he brought in for Nike. Which would at that time make Adidas the most wealthy sports clothing brand in the world. Along with this it would increase their chances to sign other dominant athletes to make them the leader in the sports industry, as Nike is today. Michael Jordan was the rise of Nike and could have been the rise for Adidas. Michael Jordan was the player that got away from all the sports clothing brands in the United States. Michael Jordan was the highest paid athlete in the world in 2014. Michael Jordan had been retired for years and still made more money than any current athlete at the time racking in 100 million dollars in 2014. This is truly an incredible statistic that he made more money retired than any athlete with endorsement deals and a professional contract combined. It truly shows that he is the most dominant athlete in basketball history. He has to go down as one of the most successful athletes to ever live being able to bring in this kind of money while
retired. This really does show that Michael Jordan was the golden ticket for any sports brand to become successful. Nike has to be thankful for being the first to jump to sign the Hall of Famer. Any sports brand that would have signed him at the time would be experiencing the success Nike is today. Michael Jordan had the ability to impact a company for over a decade. This goes to show how special of a player that Michael Jordan really was.
In the history of business, there has been a clear record of industry heads finding something or someone as a mainstay and bedrock for their respective companies or corporations; there is often a chief product that keeps many businesses afloat, even in the rough times. Apple found it's own in 2001 with the iPod. McDonald's has had the Big Mac since the late 1960s. Nike, however, found their goldmine in a person with Michael Jordan. Walter LaFeber's Michael Jordan and the New Global Capitalism tells the paints the picture of the rise of young Michael Jordan from his middle-class family in racist North Carolina up through college and into the NBA where he becomes an international sports icon. It tells the story of how Jordan catches the eye of Nike's ambitious co-founder and CEO, Phil Knight, and how he was transformed from a young, rebellious black hoopster into the face of a multi-billion dollar transnational corporation while stretching its touch all of the way to the far reaches of Asia. LeFeber's book also delves into the darker issues and topics addressing Jordan and Nike, such as race and sports and how they played a part during scandals that surrounded MJ off of the court along with the growth of Nike abroad and their dealing with technological changes in manufacturing while facing criticism for their labor practices.
The former Utah Jazz ball boy Preston Trueman sold Michael Jordan shoes worn in game 5 of the 1997 National Basketball Association finals auctioned for $104,765. December of 1999 Jordan was announced the ESPN player of the century (“Michael Jordan Fast Fact.”). In 2003 his jersey was hung after the season with the wizards. Then, in April of 2009, Jordan received basketballs greatest honor being introduced into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame (Biography.com Editors).
To begin with, I would like to tell how Michael Jordan is the most well known athlete throughout the U.S. First off, mike has many endorsements that are popular in American society like Nike and Mc Donald?s. ?According to the bureau of food and drugs?, one and four Americans eat at a fast food restaurant each day. That shows how much Mc Donald?s has an affect on U.S. With Michael Jordan, advertising and supporting McDonalds then everyone will notice him and realize who he is. Nike is a footwear company, which thousands of Americans purchase there shoes each day. When Jordan came to the NBA, he signs a contract with Nike worth $30mil (Jordan Michael Bio). He created the shoes called ?Air Jordan?s? and created a line of shoes called ?Jordan?s? which made him very famous. Nike?s profits upped 20% through 1984-1986 helping them to be the dominate shoe company in America (?The Best Frequent Flyer?). Still in 2007 His brand of shoes are still making money in stores everywhere around the U.S. Nike sold more Air Jordan?s than any basketball shoe ever made (?Sports Illustrated For Kids?).
...d now has annual revenues of more than $1 billion with MJ getting a piece of the action…. The Jordan Brand's market share of the U.S. basketball shoe market is 71% according to SportsOneSource.
The Air Jordan is a brand of sports footwear and clothing created and endorsed by Michael Jordan, the former Chicago Bulls player, and produced by Nike. Informally known as the Jordans, the concept was created by Michael Jordan, and the design done by Nike’s top designers Peter Moore, Bruce Kilgore and Tinker Hatfield. The shoes become an instant hit and are the top signature athletic footwear made by Nike. The brand is now a leading force in sports, basketball and lifestyle markets. There are Retro Jordan’s which are upgrades of the classic Air Jordan’s. These are slightly redesigned in the colors Michael Jordan wore on the court or to reflect the latest trends.
But what makes people buy the name brand Nike? They have great advertisement. I love to watch Nike commercials; they appeal to me as an athlete. The commercials show the inner fight in people, breaking records, becoming a stronger person, being the best you, and being the best athlete; you can be overcoming anything. I find their advertisement to be very inspiring and motivational. The Nike slogan ‘Just Do It’ plastered on so many products inspire others to get out and ‘Just Do It,' no hesitation. Nike tries to appeal to you to buy their products by placing their apparel on professional athletic. Everyone knows Lebron James he has many young athletes that look up to him and want to be just like him. What do they see Lebron James wearing? Nike apparel, for the kids that want to be just like him, they want what he has. So they want the Nike look. For me personally, I see Nike products and logos at just about all sporting events, which is a great strategy for the business.
They were continuing to grow and maintain their spot as one of the leader’s in sports. They continued to expand into different markets by creating hockey equipment and signing stars like Jeremy Roenick and Wayne Gretzky to endorsements. Nike also was successful in signing Tiger Woods to an endorsement deal, which was a game changer in golf equipment. During this time of extreme success many thought Nike would never be stopped and would take over as the only brand for sneakers and sporting equipment. Until 1990 when Reverend Jesse Jackson spoke out against Nike and started a boycott because of their lack of support for African Americans who are very large number of their consumers. At that point Nike had still never had and African American Vice Presidents or board members, Reverend Jackson’s argument was that they were exploiting African Americans by targeting them with advertisements and endorsements but they had no African American influence in their upper level management. Another issue that Phil Knight was accused of was being insensitive toward the inner city because with sports being a major parts of the inner city of course any athlete would like to have the best accessories to help them play the best. But Nike was something special, with their superstar and celebrity endorsements they were not only the best footwear for sports but also a fashion statement and a symbol of status at times. Nike
Marcus Jordan is the heir apparent to a sneaker legacy that has traced its lineage back 35 years. Jordan Brand has transcended sneaker and street culture to global acceptance and unprecedented popularity. If you think Yeezy jumped over the Jumpman you better think again. When you look on NBA hardwoods Jordan’s Brand has become a staple of The NBA, It’s just as recognizable as the NBA logo. If the NBA ever decides to update its logo I personally think they should replace it with the Jumpman to honor how much Michael Jordan contributed to the game of basketball.
He has bought an NBA team, supported many different charities, and changed the NBA. One of Michael Jordan’s biggest impacts was when he bought the Charlotte Hornets. The author says, “On June 15, 2006, Jordan made his way back into the NBA by purchasing a minority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats.” (Hawkins 92) Jordan has impacted the team in many ways. On May 21, 2013 Jordan announced that he had submitted an application to change the name of the Charlotte Bobcats. They would be known as the Charlotte Hornets starting in the 2014-2015 season. The team also started playing better because of Jordan’s positive impact. After his retirement Jordan started supporting many different charities. In an article about Michael Jordan’s Charities it says, “Michael Jordan charities have touched the lives of many people across this country and beyond.” (Michael Jordan Charity) Jordan has founded or funded many different charities. He has changed many people’s lives and given them a chance to become a part of a community. Michael Jordan has changed the NBA in many ways. “Among his many moments, Jordan received a four minute standing ovation at the Bulls’ United Center. The Miami Heat also retired No. 23 even though Jordan had no ties to the franchise.” (Hawkins 85) This shows the impact that Jordan had on the NBA. Teams that did not even have him as a player respected him. He will always be remembered because of the impact he has had on the game of
Nike does have the most sponsored players and they do have the most popular sports player on their side but just because they have Lebron James doesn't mean they have the best shoe/clothing item(s). Adidas have collabed with one of the most sensational artist out there and his name is Kanye West. Kanye West has brought up a whole new level to the shoe game and sponsorships. With creating one of the best designer shoes in the world, The Yeezy, he has singlehandedly changed the Adidas brand forever. “Kanye West is probably the most influential artist on the planet right now and sports adidas – even though the stripes are missing on his own Yeezy line.” (9 Reasons why adidas is better than nike.) No one wants to get the Lebron 13’s or Jordans when yeezy’s are out there. Adidas have several sponsorships/Collabs and they are revolutionary, way more than

They attempt to choose athletes who they want to reflect their brand, they are achievers, winner, determined and accomplishment orientated, which is what they also encourage their consumer to be. Another important source for brand equity from Nike is the high perceived quality of their products not only by athletes but the public as well. Although most consumers won’t be using their Nike products for high level athletic performance, Nike products are always designed to be able to be used with that
