In my essay I will talk about the skin condition Michael Jackson had known as vitiligo and his surgeries, along with his appearance. What I hope to accomplish with my classification of my topic will be to inform those who don’t know about him or why the pigment of his skin changed along with his face to know the truth. The audience will also know how he felt when he was diagnosed with the condition. When the reader gets done reading my essay, they will know a lot more about why his appearance changed over the years. What is vitiligo? Vitiligo is a skin disorder that destroys the pigment of one’s skin, leaving them with large or small blotches of skin on any part of their body; one celebrity diagnosed with this condition is Michael Jackson. …show more content…
When Michael was first diagnosed with this disease, it was a huge turning point in his life. The media made rumors saying he bleached his own skin. People that were against him tried saying he was trying to be other than what he was and claims that he trying to become more Caucasian because he never liked his African American heritage; now time to move on to his plastic surgeries. Michael Jackson got his first rhinoplasty or plastic surgery done around the late 70’s and early 80’s.
He was constantly teased by his brothers and fathers for having a wide nose during his adolescence, leaving him very insecure about himself; in other words, making him think he was ugly as a result caused him to have very low self-esteem. Around the time after his release of his Thriller album Michael had an accident during the filming of a Pepsi commercial featuring him and his brothers there was a pyrotechnic malfunction which caused to fall and break his nose. Not only did this accident cause him to have another surgery and left him with 3rd degree burns on his scalp this would be the turning point of his dramatic life. Some people would look at Michael Jackson different during the later years of his dramatic …show more content…
life. A few years later, after the Pepsi fire incident Michael Jackson released his 3rd solo album known as Bad which, coincidentally many called the “Bad Era”, if I’m not mistaken it was released 5 years after the Thriller era others looked at him a lot differently because his appearance slightly changed.
His skin got lighter and his nose became slightly thinner than it looked back in the Thriller era. This was when the media slowly started to spread rumors that he bought the bones of elephant man, which he didn’t deny because he knew the media would believe anything people would say about him and that he started to sleep inside of what people would call a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. It was from then on the media started to say that he started to sleep in these chambers so that he could retain his young looks which turned out to be false. Only after this era would things get worse for Michael. From the 90’s on his skin slightly became pale and his facial features changed a lot. His nose again got slightly thinner and he addressed as to why he got his nose thin. He says he got it thinner at the time so he could hit higher notes when singing. This is also the time period, which the media claimed that Michael Jackson had bleached his own skin to become more Caucasian and he stated that he himself that he has vitiligo from his father’s side which is something that he can’t control. While in my personal opinion, I believed he destroyed the discolored patches to even his skin tone out
in one color. As soon as Michael died it took his autopsy report to prove he had vitiligo, in other words that’s when people started to believe he had the skin condition. At some point Michael previously stated that the media make up lies to destroy one’s career, and that nobody should believe any of it. Despite the fact that Michael Jackson had vitiligo, some people might agree on one thing that he should’ve stopped after the first few operations. But in my honest opinion I feel like Michael could have done those surgeries for his own reasons aside from what he personally said in interviews. In conclusion, not only Michael Jackson had a troubled youth as both a child and teenager, he also had to deal with vitiligo affecting his skin and surgery along with his appearance which the media used against him at the end this resulted in his death because people didn’t want to know the truth and by the time people realized the truth it was far too late and nothing was going to bring him back.
The night of May 16, 1983, almost 50 million people watched one of the most spectacular performance on television (Scott 1). Jackson won 40 Billboard music awards (Scott 1). His lyrics are powerful he also talks about social causes, human race, and relationships. He inspired millions of people with the music he wrote. Since I was a little girl I listened to his music couple of my favorite songs are “Bad”, “Dirty Diana”, Make that Change”, “You are not alone”, “Billie Jean” “Smooth Criminal”. These songs where inspiring to me growing up to this day I listen to him. My siblings and me loved his movie called “The Moonwalker,” It’s about his music career when he was five years old till he went solo as an artist at the age of thirteen. I would watch his movie repeatedly. My sisters and me would try to follow his dance moves but we were always unsuccessful it was a great memory growing up. I loved the part when he turns himself into a bunny as a little girl I thought that was awesome. I would think I had magic And, I remember telling my mom “I wanted to be like Michael Jackson because he has powers” my mother would just laugh. One of his quotes from his lyrics that is powerful to me is “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, then make that change,” this
Michael Jackson went through numerous operations of plastic surgery to fix his nose and insert a dimple into his chin. In this time period, he was diagnosed with having a rare skin pigment disease called Vitiligo which turned his skin brighter. The media claimed that he bleached his skin color, also claimed that he was sleeping in an oxygen chamber. The scrutiny and backlash he received from the media steered farther away from the public eye. In 1993, he was falsely accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy in which he settled the case out of court. This caused Jackson to spiral into an addiction to painkillers, which would be ultimate cause of his death in 2009. In 2005, he had another child molestation case in which he was acquitted out all

Since Michael could not read or write music very well, his method of songwriting was coming up with everything in his head. “But just as Mozart could hear whole symphonies in his head, Jackson fully realized his songs before they were put down on paper” (Jones). Just as Mozart could write music off of the top of his head, Michael could do the same thing. His music hasn’t essentially evolved over time but he was influential on other musical artists. “Like Elvis and Bob Dylan before him, Jackson reshaped pop culture in ways that are hard to comprehend.
