Electrical engineering is one of the fields that have experienced a milestone in technological advancement. From the time of industrial revolution in the 19th century up to, lots of changes in this field have been observed owing to the fact that this field affects almost all sectors of the economy that tend to use electricity as a source of energy to run machines and computerized systems. Ranging from hydroelectric electricity, wind energy and renewable sources such solar energy, the field of electrical engineering remains one of the fields that are very much fundamental in the economic and technological development of the globe. The field has been transformed technologically since the industrial revolution up to date and there is one name that can never be passed without mention when talking about electricity and electrical engineering, Michael Faraday. Michael Faraday is referred to as the father of electrical engineering due to his immense contribution in the various experiments concerning electricity and his name is used even up to date as a unit for measuring capacitance, that is the ‘‘farad’’ (McFadyen, 2009). His main areas of contribution were in the fields of electromagnetism, diamagnetism and electrolysis (McFadyen, 2009). It is during his experiments on electromagnetism that Faraday invented the electric dynamo which became the precursor of modern power generators and the electric motor and that is precisely why he is referred to as the father of electricity (Valkenburgh, 1995). With these major breakthroughs in the field of electricity, electrical engineering was born. There are some other notable figures in the development of electric engineering and one of them is Nikola Tesla. He was a Serbian-American physicist and... ... middle of paper ... ...s (Boysen & Muir, 2013). The field of ICT has further pilled the pressure on the field since the flow of information has been exponentially heightened with the invention of social media and information technology (Bristtol, 2014). People all over the world can now access information about electric and electronic devices online and their specifications. The engineers themselves therefore have step their innovation to keep up with growing demands, taste and class if they are to stay in business (Maksimovic, Zane, & Erickson, 2004). In conclusion, I can say that the changing technological advancement have impacted both positively and negatively on the field of electrical engineering and more is yet to come since technology these days is like mutating bacteria which keeps on changing its genetic material and framework in order to fit into the ever changing environment.
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and physicist. He was also considered an eccentric genius and recluse. Tesla is best known for his feud with Thomas Edison over AC power Versus DC Power. He was also well known for inventing the Tesla Coil which is still used in radio technology today. Nikola Tesla was mostly forgotten until the 1990’s when there was a resurgence of interest in popular culture.
In the 1880s, there was a war going on in the United States. Backstabbing, secrecy, and death were common. However, this war had no weapons. It was a dual between two geniuses. These two men are the fathers of modern technology. The War of Currents was a battle between the famous inventor Thomas Edison, and the mysterious genius Nikola Tesla. Tesla and Edison engaged in an epic competition to create the most efficient, cheap, usable form of electricity. Everyone knows who Thomas Edison was, but not many people know of Nikola Tesla. Tesla was an unappreciated mastermind who changed the world with his inventions, performed many strange experiments, and practically invented usable electricity.
Nikola Tesla is a man that many individuals associate with brilliance. Moreover, Tesla is a name that ignites impulses within an individual’s brain which illuminate, via bio-circuitry, the thought association of Tesla and brilliance, similar to the force we term as electricity. Brilliance however, shouldn’t be the only descriptive word to come to mind when thinking of one of the greatest engineers and inventors to live. Innovation and determination should be undoubtedly included in the list of descriptive words of Mr. Nikola Tesla. For without the innovative mind of Tesla, midcentury inventions as well as current technological advances would be nonexistent, or worse, credited to Thomas Edison.
This paper will be an effort to explain about Thomas Alva Edison and his life before the 1900s. Thomas Edison was an American inventor, he was considered the most prolific inventor in American history and one of America’s leading businessmen who came from humble beginnings to work as an inventor of major technology. He was also giving public recognition as a participant in the production of helping build America’s economy during the nation’s vulnerable early years. Thomas Edison was born on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was the last and youngest out of seven children of Samuel Edison Jr., an exiled political activist, and Nancy Elliott Edison, an accomplished school teacher. When he was seven years old he suffered from scarlet fever
I don't know who the encyclopedias say invented those things, but I bet it won't give any mention of a man by the name of Nikola Tesla. In fact, I bet they won't give much mention of Tesla for any of the many things he invented. We can thank Thomas Edison for this. Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljian, Croatia at precisely midnight on July 9/10, 1856.
During the late 1800’s there were two men who both started to mess with the power of electricity there was Edison and Nikola Tesla. Edison was the first man to create the electrical system, but according to Tesla the way Edison’s system was designed and had flaws that that Tesla didn’t agree with. Edison’s idea is still used to this day but now has the improvements that were given by Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla was born in Smijan, Croatia in 1856 to a mother named Djuka Mandic who was also an inventor for small appliances and a father named Milutin Tesla who was a man of the priesthood. As a young boy is was influenced and great deal by his mother in the world of inventing and started to help his mother with her inventions.
Firstly, I would like to discuss the beginning of technology and how it has quickly changed. From 1822, the first rotating device that used electromagnetism that was built by Peter Barlow. To then, 12 years later in May 1834, the first actual working electric motor was built by Moritz Jacobi. 4 years later, in September 1838, Jacobi then improved the first electric motor, it was now powerful enough to drive a boat across a (wide) river, filled with 14 people. Although it wasn’t until 1839/1840 that other inventors, worldwide, were able to build motors that were of a higher performance. However, it wasn’t until 1868, that the first power station was built. The power station was used to power; lights, heating, inventions that produced hot water, an elevator, life saving devices and farm buildings. It wasn’t although until 1882, that the public power station started operation. Therefore technology advances, are our friend.
The topic of this essay is the Tesla Coil. The Tesla Coil was created by a guy named Nikola Tesla. Nikola made it in the year of 1891. Almost a l00 years ago. Nikola Tesla Died in 1993 on January 7th. Besides Nikola Tesla let's talk about what it can do. A tesla coil can light up light bulbs. A large Tesla Coil can light a fluorescent light bulb for up to 50 feet away. I thought that that was pretty cool. Even florescent light bulbs that have been burnt out can still light up from the Tesla Coil. For example a Tesla Coil can produce electrical arcs. The electrical arcs can create volts well above 1,000,000. Nikola Tesla himself has set the highest record of electrical arcs of 100,000,000 volts.Tesla Memorial Society said “Tesla himself got
As an engineering student, design, develop and test electrical equipments is the major purpose of all time. In other words, electrical engineer is concerned with using electricity to transmit electric power. In electrical engineering, there are extensive subfields such as power engineering, control system and signal processing. It is also worth to point out the difference between electrical engineering and electronic engineering. According to the research, electronic engineering is a major that deal with the electronic system such as computers and radar, to be more specific, electronic engineers are concerned with using electricity to process information.
Thomas Edison is widely regarded as one of the most influential inventors and innovators of the Twentieth Century. Edison’s efforts ushered in a new era of technology; a world in which electricity would be harnessed and made to bow before man’s will. Walter Lippman wrote, “It is impossible to measure the importance of Edison by adding up the specific inventions with which his name is associated” (qtd. in Baldwin 409). Edison’s decades long career was a synergistic melding of his success as an inventor and his prowess as a promoter and businessman. He exemplified the ideals of intelligence married to hard work and perseverance. He forever changed the landscape of American invention and the limits of technological change (Baldwin 409).
Humans these days take electricity for granted. We don’t truly understand what life was like without it. Most young adults will tell you their life does not depend on electricity, but they aren’t fooling anyone. They all know that their life depends on electricity; whether it’s television, their phone, Google, or the lights in their house. We need to stop taking those things for granted and give credit where credit is due. That is why I chose to write about the scientists who contributed to the discovery of electricity, which then helped modern scientists fuel the electricity phenomenons we now have today.
Nikola Tesla is regarded as one of the most brilliant inventors in history. His work provided the basis for the modern alternating current power system, as well as having developed both radio and the fluorescent light bulb. He worked with Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, among others. He was also widely misunderstood by his peers and the public at large.
Michael Faraday is a British physicist and chemist, best known for his discoveries of electromagnetic induction and of the laws of electrolysis. He was born in 1791 to a poor family in London, Michael Faraday was extremely curious, questioning everything. He felt an urgent need to know more. At age 13, he became an errand boy for a bookbinding shop in London. He read every book that he bound, and decided that one day he would write a book of his own. He became interested in the concept of energy, specifically force. Because of his early reading and experiments with the idea of force, he was able to make important discoveries in electricity later in life. He eventually became a chemist and physicist.
Electrical engineering deals with electricity, electro-magnetism and electronics. It also covers power, control systems, telecommunications and signal processing. These engineers are usually concerned with large-scale electrical systems such as motor control and power transmission, as well as utilizing electricity to transmit energy. Electrical engineers may work on a diverse range of technologies, from the design of household appliances, lighting
To explain what exactly Tesla and Edison did, it is important to know that in a DC system, electrons flow only in one direction. Where as in an AC system, the electric current reverses its direction many times during the time frame. To conclude, the use of electricity came from no one person, but actually a combination of quite a few intellectuals. Nonetheless, the reality of how electricity behaves is just as important as its history.
