Ever since the beginning of news, there have been minor alterations to the reports. Doing anything to get their ratings to increase, changes would have to be made, whether it’s simply bending the truth a little or labeling someone or something. In Michael Parenti’s “Methods of Misrepresentation”, Parenti uses his methods of political bias in the news. The news main goal is to grab our attention, no matter what effects it has on the viewers. This is how some mainstream reporters are politically and media biased. “Media plays an extensive role in an individual’s daily life. Right from the second you wake up till you go to bed after saying goodnight to your wife, kid, parents, siblings or friends, you are surrounded in a world built just for you by the media.” (Shafi). The News isn’t the only one influencing the world; no one really notices this but Advertisements play an important role in Media Brainwashing. In the video “Outfoxed,” we see many of Michael Parenti’s methods being used by FOX News and interviews by some of Fox’s previous staff talking about the way they were treated while working there, and what they were and were not allowed to do; even after they stopped working there. Editing is always a useful tool when wanting to hide something. In this video there are many examples of omitting. The newscasts only show or tell what they need to, to make us view the story or subject as they would. In this video we also see the news reporters to “Shut Up!” when they hear or say something that they do not want the public to know. By this, we can see that they are omitting some information and they crack down when a guest brings this information into light. Another example found in the movie “Outfoxed” is Parenti’s method of Placeme... ... middle of paper ... ... need to focus harder on providing us with information that is truly important to our lives. Now that we know, we, the audience must not believe everything we hear on the news and if we are truly interested in a story we hear, we must look into it for ourselves by going on the internet and looking up various articles about the topic that you were interested in. I do agree with all of these sources that advertisement has hurt everyone in negative ways and that many of us would feel more confident about ourselves without them in our lives. I don’t personally don’t agree with what advertisers do because I feel as if they try to find their way into our wallets without caring if we are buying junk or not. I believe that it should be mandatory for people to be handed their money back to them if the product does not come through with what it promises to provide you with.
In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. Through manipulation and lies, media manages to modify objective news into biased news in order to convince the public of what the media wants them to believe. The article, “How the Media Twist the News”, by Sheila Gribben Liaugminas discusses the major influence that news has on readers based on their choice of stories and words. “How the Media Twists the News” has borrowed from multiple other texts such as the books like Public Opinion and Liberty and News, news magazine writers such as Ruderman, and news networks like CBS through Bias, A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News and CNN to make her arguments valid and prove that the news is biased and that it does influence readers significantly because of it.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.

The media is often considered to be biased. The reason for this is because they do not act neutral on the things that they report on. They usually give their point of view and tend to warp the information so it’s easily digestible by the average person. This type of “nugget feeding,” can influence the judgment of some one who has no idea what is going on. The media tends to sensationalize the news by making it seem dramatic, and compelling. This hooks the viewer, and keeps them tuned in. The purpose of this is for ratings, and most importantly money. The media has become less professional, and their morality has gone down hill. The editors/gatekeepers decide what information is sent out for the public to see, and hear. This is another way that the news is shaped for our viewing pleasure.
In his show Are You A Biased TV Viewer, Stossel and Goldberg are discussing how mediastream is biased (liberal biased), meaning it’s only one sided. Goldberg wrote a book that was not only very popular, but talked about there being bias in the media and that viewers should be made aware of that. In his interview with Stossel, Goldberg said that the reason news media mainstream is so biased is because of groupthink. According to Goldberg, “ groupthink is when there are too many like minded people making the decisions on what the audience and reader gets to read and see on TV.” So when a news reporter talks about something important that has just occurred or is occurring, and say that they are telling the truth they’re correct. However, like Goldberg said in his interview, even though the media is telling the truth they are doing so but through a filtered prism. It is clearly evident that on the basis of the advertisement in the magazine I was allured to enquire about the product from the company. The advertisement specifically gave the technicality of the products and its specifications. It was clearly evident from the advertisement that it was given with a view that customers would be encouraged to buy the product that is why every specification was given in the advertisement as well as the address from where the product can be purchased.
The speech titled "Advertising's Overdue Revolution" is a very interesting read. I will attempt to break the speech down into a number of main themes discussed by the author. I will then examine each of these themes and decide whether or not I agree with the points presented. Advertising plays a significant role in today’s society. It allows us to understand trends and important facts about what our world is being shaped into. We use ads as motivation in corporate settings and within our day to day lives. Without the motivation to purchase a product many of us would not buy most of the things we have. It is just important to remember to use the essential values and ethical behaviors of advertising.
During this day and age when news is broadcasted, the public always seems to trust the media and believe that the news that is always given to them is always true. This is called false media. We buy every product for a reason and if there wasn’t a such thing as advertisement we would be buying products for no reason. There would be no competition between businesses and no product would be unique and different from products that have the same purpose, some people prefer to wash dishes with Dawn dishwashing liquid over Joy dishwashing liquid even though they have the exact same purpose. In some way one dishwashing liquids advertising was better than the other which makes the consumer prefer one dishwashing liquid over the other. In modern time we will all be advertised at almost 24/7 until we die. This statement by Will Rogers states two very important things; advertising is there to change your mind and that it can change your mind. If it couldn’t advertisements wouldn’t exist in the first place. Organized advertising for products was introduced in the 19th century when two companies found themselves selling the same product. Instead of trying to make the best product they realized they could sell the idea of a better product and that their product was the key to having a modern household and modern is essentially what people wanted. Most people don’t believe that they are truly affected by advertising, but many studies have proven that even subconsciously advertisements do affect your decisions.

There needs to be a way to separate what are the fake facts from the so-called truth in order to find the real truths in the story. What makes this difficult to do is that there is “no neutral position from which to stand; every assertion the press publishes is backstopped b the relevance of the community making that assertion” (12). Reporter and editors in journalism cannot not report on a story, they need to be constantly updating which means sometimes the truth is changed to please their audience. The standardization of hiring and training means the industry is self-regulated based on their audience, thus forcing censorship onto journalists who do not follow the standards placed upon them. Making is complicated for the viewers who are trying to find the truth to be able to receive such. The way the media portrays the truth is quick, fast-paced and written specifically for the audience reading from the newspaper or website.
