The band Metallica is a heavy metal music band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California after James Hetfield responded to an ad in June 1981 placed by Lars Ulrich in “The Recycler” a Los Angeles, classified only newspaper. A drummer named Lars Ulrich placed the ad “Drummer looking for other metal musicians to jam with Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head and Iron Maiden.", James Hetfield, answered the advertisement. Before the band had even formed Ulrich asked Metal Blade Records founder if he could record a song for the label's upcoming compilation album Metal Massacre, the request was accepted. The unnamed band was officially formed in October 1981, but still without a name for his band. Lars had his own ideas for a band name, names such “Blitzer, Grinder, Helldriver, Thunderfuck, as well as 'Lars Ulrich' spelled backwards.[8]” One day Ulrich was chatting with a friend Ron Quintana, who had been brainstorming names for a fanzine, Quintana's proposed the names "Metal Mania" and "Metallica." Lars convinces Ron to name the fanzine Metal Mania and "steals" the name "Metallica" for his band [8]. At this time, the unknown band named Metallica was born! Over Metallica's first year two years, Hetfield and Ulrich fired several band members, including the original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine. Metallica had driven to New York to record their debut album, that is where Mustaine was officially fired. The firing resulted from his excessive use of drugs and alcohol, overly aggressive behavior, and personality clashes within the band[10]. The band packed up Mustaine's gear and put him on a Greyhound bus and sent him back to California; this time allowed Mustaine to stew his thoughts and create lyrics for his music that would later have ... ... middle of paper ... ...w.rocklistmusic.co.uk/rstone.html#80's 14. Eddie Van Halen was born in Holland in 1955 and immigrated to Pasadena California. At the age of seven, Eddie was training as a classical pianist, although his love for Rock and Roll was developing. He started working a paper route and used the money to buy a drum set. His brother Alex, also musically inclined, bought a guitar. After months of practicing, Alex and Eddie switched instruments. Alex would spend hours on Eddie's drums and loved to play them. Eddie, a little frustrated with the drums, picked up Alex's guitar and felt at home with the instrument. Eddie would sit in his room for hours memorizing Eric Clapton guitar rifts' from "Cream". In his teenage years, Eddie and Brother Alex Van Halen played in local clubs and local parties in California. They started become a big name in the local area of Pasadena California. A police officer once commented that the parties that the Van Halen brothers played at were so big, that the police were looking for where the party was in a four-block radius. There would be almost 2,000 people attending house parties when the Van Halen brothers played. Alex and Eddie initially called there band Genesis but learned there was a much bigger group in Europe with the same name, so they changed it to Mammoth. The band had humble beginnings and the brothers could not afford a PA system for their concerts. They rented a PA system from David Lee Roth when his band was not playing. During one performance, the rented PA system broke down. A member of the local band...
December 4, 1980, stating that the band could not go on in its present state.
The members included Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Larry Van Kriedt, Dave Evans, and Colin Burgess. The people who wanted the most success out of them were Australia’s legendary roadie Ray Arnold and his partner Alan Kissack. The two men convinced “Chequers” entertainment manager Gene Pierson to let the band play at the popular Sydney nightclub in 1973. Colin Burgess was the first member fired, and several bassists and drummers passed through the band the next year. The Young brothers decided that Evans was not a suitable frontman for the group, because they felt he was more of a glam rocker. It was Gene Pierson who arranged for Bon Scott from “Fraternity” to join them as the lead singer. (Paul Sutcliffe, Pg. 34, P.2)
Many people and many styles of music influenced Rock and Roll. The styles included Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Bluegrass, Boogie-Woogie, and Rockabilly. Each was a major factor into the introduction of a new style of music called Rock ‘N’ Roll.
Van Halen took heavy metal to new heights. After more than two decades of playing sold-out concert halls, selling millions of albums and enduring various lineup changes and solo projects, Van Halen is recognized as one of the most resilient and successful rock bands to emerge from the 1970s and continue into the 1980’s. Eddie and Alex Van Halen were raised in Pasadena, the children of Dutch immigrants who immigrated to California in 1967. The Van Halen brothers grew up taking classical piano lessons. Eddie played guitar and Alex played the drums as teenagers. In 1974, they hooked up with David Lee Roth (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), while gigging around town in their band Mammoth. Within a few years, they had become one of the most popular bands on the Los Angeles scene. Fans packed L.A.'s smoky rock clubs to check out Eddie's unconventional guitar riffs and Roth's over-the-top showmanship.

At around this time, almost halfway across the world, Lars Ulrich got his first drum set in his home in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was eleven years old and had just been to his first heavy metal concert. The entire idea of being a drummer was viewed as just being a hobby, his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become a professional tennis player. As nineteen eighty came around Lars' parents decided that he needed to be in a different environment in order to hone his tennis skills. They decided to move to Newport Beach, California because they believed the sunny climate would be more conductive to Lars' tennis practices. (Doughton 13)

Kirk Lee Hammett is the lead guitarist for the thrash metal band Metallica. He is particularly admirable to me for his eloquent lyrics and quotes, stunning guitar solos and the accomplishments he has achieved in life. He is and always has been a most influential person in my life since I discovered Metallica in 1996.
The band was officially formed in 1962, having six original members. Mick Jagger was lead vocals and also played the harmonica. Jagger’s signature look has always been his lips, but they were often criticized. Keith Richards played the guitar and also sang. Charlie Watts was on drums, and Brian Jones played the guitar, harmonica, sitar, and sang. Two less popular members were I...

Several years ago I immersed myself in the gothic and metal lifestyle and I’m still a part of it. As soon as I started hearing more about the underground aspect of it, I knew I had to investigate. In the gothic and metal lifestyle, no subculture is the same since each genre is like an umbrella, something different always beneath the next. On February 7, 2014 the opportunity arose for me to attend my first underground Darkside sold out concert in Boston at the Paradise Rock Club at 10:00 pm, which is one of their venues for their world tour. Other places they would be touring in are: Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Belgim, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Ireland, UK, Australia and China. Interestingly enough, their next show February 8, 2014 would be in New York at Terminal 5, between 34th and 59th street. This venue has 5 distinict environments and can hold up to 3,000 people.
Hard rock really began in the 1970’s; but, is rooted from the music of the mid-1960’s; such as, garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. Hard rock was started when both British and American bands began to add a greater blues influence to their music. This in turn added harder, deeper and overall louder tone to their music. A few of the first hard rock bands were The Who, The Rolling Stones and The Kingsmen. These bands had slowly converted their music from the classic soft rock, with acoustic instruments and a greater emphasis on vocals, into hard rock, with a greater emphasis on the instruments. Near the end of the 1960’s more and more bands began to play this new type of music. Some of the bands had taken this change to the extreme and actually defined heavy metal; such as, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Led Zeppelin. But, most of the bands continued to play hard rock, “The good time music”. The 1970’s were known as the expansion period of hard rock. By this time every rock band had made their music at least a little “heavier”, in order to remain “afloat” in the changing music industry. Throughout the early seventies the bands ...
