Met Sage Thompson a sassy sarcastic normal 17 year old that has been through a lot within a little bit of time. Sage is always outgoing. She is never afraid to speak her mind, and will never back down from a fight; her favorite line to say to anything and everything is “Fight me” although she’s a 5’3 girl. But Sage is always friendly unless you gave her a reason not to be. Although she’s tough; she’s also the kind of girl that if you yell at her she will want to go hide and cry. Now met Owen Jackson the cliche bad boy. He’s the kind that only cares about himself and just wants to get into girls pants and spend his whole high school life parting with his group of friends. He’s had a bad life. But what ‘bad boy’ hasn’t? Owen is an inconsiderate,
rude, ecological, asshole. Who thinks every girl is just falling over themselves trying to get him to notice them. As for Sage she’s never really gave a damn about what Owen and his posse were doing. She just knew as long as it didn’t affect her she was fine. That’s was until her parents got into a car crash killing her dad instantly and leaving her mom in a coma. That’s the only family she has left. Now since she is still not legal age to live by herself she’s forced to move across town into her mom’s closest friend’s house. Which also happens to be the same house that the oh so lovely Mr. Owen Jackson lives in. Now everything he does affects her. What will it be like to live across the hall from someone you never even liked.
Mercer Mayer is an American artist and short story author who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on December 30, 1943. He grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended art school in Honolulu and New York City. He has written over 300 short stories, some with the help of his current wife, Gina Mayer. The stories I have chosen to analyze are part of his “Little Critter” series. These stories include “Little Critter’s The Fussy Princess,” “Taking Care of Mom,” “I Was so Mad,” “The New Baby,” and “A Very Special Critter.” All of these stories were a big part of my childhood and hold a special place in my heart.

A writer’s style is a combination of thousands of factors that abet a writer to create a unique meaning for each and every word they use; moreover, they invent the relationships and patterns found between these words. Every author has an unique writing style. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s was relative to what he was passionate about. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing style is reflective of his Puritan beliefs as indicated through his personal life and family background; his style is also indicative of the fact that his relationship with his wife was less than ideal; furthermore, these ideas are evident in “The Birthmark”, “The Minister’s Black Veil”, and “Young Goodman Brown”.
In his memoir, This Boy’s Life, Tobias Wolff explores his childhood as he attempts to define who he is and who he wants to be in life. Throughout the book Toby has an ideal person that he idolizes, but is unable to achieve. This version of him shows up when he's forging his applications for prep school and again when Mr. and Mrs. Howard take him to get new clothes and he's looking in the mirror. This person has confidence, gets good grades, and is a star athlete, and is cool; the kind of person you'd find at a prep school like the Hill school. Although within the narration of the book Toby never achieves his ideal, he leaves the reader wondering if he is capable of change.
Bailey Mick Owens is a tan, brunette boy from an affluent family. He has been a model student his entire life. Since he was a boy he has been very interested in sports, however Bailey never let sports get in the way of his education. Not only did Bailey play sports, he played three sports. He was even a student council member at one point. Even with all these distractions he still found a way to get a lot of ladies. Bailey is a well-rounded student and a genuine person.
The Romantic Period served as a breeding ground for some of America's most extraordinary authors. Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ralph Waldo Emerson are just some of the names that graced this Golden Era of American literature. Great as they were, these men still lacked a significant amount of originality. Relating their themes and structures results in little to no variation. One author, though born into the era of Romanticism dared to expand the possibilities nineteenth - century literature had to offer. Through works such as "Young Goodman Brown," "The Minister's Black Veil," and "The Birthmark," Nathaniel Hawthorne incorporated Romanticism into his own style. Including ordinary men, such as Mr. Hooper, Goodman Brown, and Aylmer helped to classify Hawthorne as a semi-Romantic author. Other Romantic characteristics were found in his stories as well. Symbolism, man's connection to nature, and the supernatural are all also present in most of his tales. But, most importantly, Hawthorne was remembered for breaking the rules and adding his own touch. He told allegories and parables concerned about his concept of the "unpardonable sin," always including the character's trials from obsession to alienation to finally a loss of soul. Careful review of his work probes the fact that fitting into a dictating society is not only boring but dangerously ordinary.
Owen invites Johnny to spend Owen’s last days together; Johnny does not know of Owen’s soon passing. When they were boys, Owen had a passion for basketball; however, his small size limits his athletic skills. Due to this, Owen makes Johnny practice a basketball play where Johnny lofts Owen into the air in order for Owen to dunk the ball into the basket. Johnny finds this excessive practice to be tedious, but all the practice comes to use when it is time for Owen to pass. In an act of terror against the Viet Cong—Owen was fighting in the Vietnam War, a man launches a grenade into a bathroom with Owen and Vietnamese children inside it. To protect the children, Owen and Johnny use the technique of the basketball play in order for Owen to block the grenade from harming the children. Owen believed, “there was a reason for everything…” (105) and “it made Owen furious when [Johnny] suggested that anything was an accident…” (105). There was a reason for Owen requiring practice of that basketball move—that reason being fate. Adversely, Johnny Wheelwright believes that individuals have the
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a great writer of the nineteenth century. To this day, his works continue to be widely read and highly regarded. He was a great writer and wrote about themes that are timeless and could be understood by people in his time as well as today (Diorio 134-135). His use of literary devices such as symbolism, irony, fantasy and illusion made his works very entertaining and powerful. He was said to be a “literary genius” (Diorio 134).
Horace Walpole created a basis for his literature that explores themes of troubled marriages, female empowerment, and incest; themes that challenge the eighteenth-century norms. Walpole uses ideas from his observation of his parents’ troubled marriage and his close relationship with his mother for his writings. Walpole created characters based on himself and his parents by giving his characters similar characteristics and personalities as himself and his parent. He is not a feminist but the female characters in his novels gain power and control from the tyrant male characters. His writings are also an anti-catholic portrayal by his uses of the supernatural and erotic themes. Walpole's childhood experiences affected his writing with the distant relationship with his father that made him want to become a father figure himself, and his hidden sensual desire for his mother. Walpole incorporated his life and his beliefs into his writings.
True literary success is a extraordinary rarity. If an author’s work does not consistently appeal to and appraise the continued plight of the average man through time, it cannot be considered a true classic. Nathaniel Hawthorne exemplifies an author bestowed underserved popularity and success perpetuated solely by that popularity. Examining both his work and his lifestyle brings to light a dull drive for obsolete accomplishments. While his plotlines can be considered classic, his style portrays an overzealous attempt at sophistication. Hawthorne’s desire to be considered a great writer takes away from the raw content of his works, and leaves the text dry and dull. His work is no longer relevant to a broad audience, further depreciating the
Nathaniel Hawthorne once said, “I do not want to be a doctor and live by men’s diseases, nor minister to live by their sins, nor a lawyer and live by men’s quarrels. So, I don’t see that there is anything left for me but to be an author” (Nathaniel). This statement describes Hawthorne’s personality and life in a way that no other quote could. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an Anti-Transcendentalist writer, meaning that he had a negative view of all humans. The Anti-Transcendentalist movement was a pessimistic branch of Romanticism, which began in the mid 1800s and lasted until the late 1800s. Nathaniel Hawthorne was influenced greatly by his childhood, which is what caused him to be an anti-transcendentalist, yet in his novel The Scarlet Letter there was a bridge created between anti-transcendentalism and utopian transcendentalism.
Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne’s literary career, he utilized multiple literary techniques. He was an example for countless writers and is still a model for authors today. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s employment of modern themes and style, along with the effect of influences on his writing, paved the way for his renowned career as an author.

I envied her from the day I realized that looking pretty was more important than being rough. I had always been good in games, in fighting, in being well… rough. When we were much younger, I used to bully her so badly that she never joined in any of our games. She became a weak ghost, a girl who was just that…a girl. No more. Well I… well; I was more of a boy, a fighter, someone who laughed when the mother advised the daughter to wash her hair with herbal shampoo to make it shiny and black as coal. I ran after kites and learned that slamming the flat of your hand into someone’s face is much more effective than curling that same hand into a fist. I learned that one should never box someone with the thumb hidden inside the white-knuckled clench of a fist. I learned that if someone digs at your eyes with two fingers, you could just bring your flattened hand vertically up at your nose, and whoever’s fingers however long, would never reach your eyes. I learned that being flat was more beneficial than being round.
In this world of realistic animation, high tech video games, and so much more, voice actors are becoming a lucrative commodity. That is, if you are able to get your foot in the door. More than likely, you will never be a household name, but if you're doing it for the right reasons like David Kaye is, that's not going to make any difference. A few months ago, I was able to chat with David about being a successful voice actor (just look at his credits if you don't believe the "successful" part), and he was forthcoming about a variety of things including how he became a voice actor, what some of his memorable experienes have been, and a bit about what he sees for his future.
