Katelyn became teenage girl and I felt like time moved really quickly. She just finished with 7th grade and will go to high school in two years. This made me feel very happy and proud for Katelyn, but also made me felt somewhat sad. I feel like Katelyn will be on her own very soon, since she is independent. So I believe the time left for us to hang out like this is only 5 years: 8th grade and 4 years of high school. After all, I was amazed to see her healthy growing without any serious insures so far. She has been exploring up to exosystem in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory. According to the Arnett textbook, before exosystem, there is mesosystem. The mesosystem is the interconnections between the various microsystems and the exosystem is the societal institutions that give indirect but important influenced on the development of the children (p. 25). For example of the mesosystem, I had really bad day one day after arguing with my partner and after I came home, I saw Katelyn being not nice to her little sister. Most of time, I would not yell at her, but that day, I was hard to control my temper since I was super bad day. After, I hug her and said sorry but at that moment, I was very angry that Katelyn was not able to play nicely with her sister. She feels that caregivers don’t trust their children and that they rather than giving their child commands. I see some similarities of my life and experiences that I found in the text. When I was growing up, I pretty much had a childhood. Me and my sister will play outside and do things without being supervised by my parents. When discussing the interactions within different systems which were discussed in Chapter 1 of the text, you a left with complex yet systematic avenues to which an individual’s development can be affected. In order to fully understand the interactions of individuals on a day to day basic, it is imparative that we first understand that people and everything around them are in constant change. Rather those changes are internal or external, we must be able to identify these systems, which intel will help us with the understanding of human development.
In Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, there are five systems that ultimately influence an individual. The first system is the microsystem, which consists of the people who have direct contact to an individual. In my own life, my immediate family consists of my mother and I. I am an only child to my mother and since my mother and my father have been separated since I was a baby, he has not been part of my microsystem. In addition, I am also a student at CCP. I have a network of friends whom I keep in close contact with. The people that I encounter at home, school, and work have direct contact with me and thus, they are part of my microsystem.
Andy is an only child aged 12 studying at the ‘foundation’ level of a neighbourhood school. He comes from a single parent family where his father is an odd job worker. During this stage of development, children continue to develop gross motor skills but most of the development is with their fine motor skills. During this stage children are beginning to learn how to color, use scissors, write, and possibly tie their own shoes. Children will develop hand eye coordination as well as the ability to manipulate objects to accomplish what they want. My development was especially slow in this area. I did not begin to write legible words until I was five almost six years old. I still to this day, cannot cut a straight line and I could not color in the lines until I was about ten years old. I have always struggled with hand eye coordination and anything requiring the ability to manipulate a small object.
In the concept of Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems they played huge role to shape my character, values and so on to make me a better person right now that I still value them. For example, in my mesosytem to force me to be more religious because I studied in catholic school. Until now, I become more religious person and makes some more friends which it help me to build up my confident to my social activities. Also, my microsystem made me more independent because in my every early age I started to be help in house chores that helps me to be my foundation in the real world. Only few people will help out.
