Mercy Otis Warren
Mercy Otis Warren was a pamphleteer, and a playwright who attacked the British government. She also fit time into be a wife and a mother to five sons, while writing a three volume book published in 1805 called The Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution, based on her first hand knowledge of the subject. As a result of these accomplishments, Mercy Otis Warren was an influential figure during the American Revolution.
Mercy Otis Warren was born on September 25, 1728 in Barnstable, Massachusetts near Plymouth. Her parents were James Otis and Mary Allyne Otis, they lived on a farm at Barnstable where James prospered as a merchant, farmer, and an attorney for seventy-six years. James Otis also served as a judge of the court of common pleas for his country and a colonel in the militia. Mercy's great-great grandfather came to America on board the Mayflower as a servant, and signed the Mayflower compact.
James Jr., Joseph, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Samuel were the only seven plus herself out of her thirteen brothers and sisters that survived. The Otises saw to is that their sons were prepared for college, but the daughters were given no formal education. As the daughter of one of the leaders of the country, Mercy was exposed to frequent political discussions. At times Mercy was also allowed to sit in on her brothers lessons while they were being tutored by their uncle, the local minister, Reverend Russel. He let Mercy borrow books from his library. She absorbed Sir Walter Raleigh's History of the World (1614) and other classics with zeal. From this she obtained a good education.
At the age of 16 Mercy was introduced to James Warren, who at the time was attending Harvard College. Their friendship evolved slowly into a courtship that lasted several years, until they got married on November 14, 1754. Mercy and James Warren had five sons, James in 1757, Winslow in1759, Charles in 1762, Henry in 1764, and George in 1766.

Rice does a stupendous job of briefly and easily reinterpreting and breaking down a time of revolution, rebellion, and transformation within colonial America. Though short and sweeping, his intriguing work should not go unnoticed for he recreates a crucial event in history into something much more exciting than ever before for his audience. Rice ties this rebellion to other revolutions that would follow such as the Glorious Revolution in Maryland arguing that there is a link between this revolt in 1676 and the many others than would eventually follow. Rice’s narrative is one that is extremely unique. His ability to affectively grasp his readers attention on subjects of history such as Bacon’s Rebellion, that have been previously over looked due to their blandness, is truly remarkable. Despite his inability to give an in-depth analysis on each event that occurred, making the subject interesting and reasonable to read and understand is more important for the success of the narrative. Though some claims within the book could probably use further elaboration for his audience, James D. Rice’s Tales from a Revolution is a well-written book that is able to convey in a concise manner, accurate information regarding an extremely important event in history for a wide array of audiences using what can be considered a new-age style of
Anne Hutchinson was a remarkable colonial woman who first came to Massachusetts in the fall of 1634. She is less remembered for her contributions in the new world as a wife, mother of fourteen, and midwife to many than for her eventual trial and banishment from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. I was interested in writing a paper on a colonial woman and chose Anne Hutchinson after a "Google" search turned up a very good review on a recent book about her life. I have been intrigued by the fact that the Puritans came to America to practice their religion freely, yet allowed no freedom to question their doctrine. The book, American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson, the Woman Who Defied the Puritans, is an excellent examination of this lack of religious freedom and the life of a woman that intersects it.

Almost everyone’s heard of her, there have been numerous books written about her, several thousand letters accounted for that she wrote. She was also the wife of the second president and the mother to the sixth American president, who was this woman? She was Abigail Adams. Abigail Adams life didn’t acquire meaning solely from knowing and being around these two great men however, Adams was eminently worth knowing as an individual herself. Throughout the ages, women have always been involved in war but Abigail Adams brought a new concept to women and war with her involvement in the early colonial years and the American Revolution. Abigail Adams did many things in her lifetime but the questions I will be attempting to answer is how exactly did she impact the Revolutionary War and change the social roles of women in such a male dominated society.
Born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts (SBA House), she was brought up into a large Quaker family with many activist traditions. Quakers believed highly in education and a strong work ethic from an early age. “They believed in peace, temperance and justice, and this was to affect her adult concerns about injustices toward women, as well as social problems that come from alcohol,” (Grace). As well as believing that men and women were equal partners before God, which later had an influence on her belief in women's rights. Her mother, Lucy, loved to sing and dance which led to much controversy between her father’s harsh Quaker faith, which later on to her convictions of women equality. “No toys or music were allowed in the Anthony home for fear that they would distract the children from God's word” (Linder). Anthony’s father, Daniel, ran a cotton mill with strong values to refuse slave-picked cotton. At the age of six, Anthony and her family moved to Battenville, New York because Daniel was asked to manage other mills (Grace). Mary Warren is an important character in Arthur Miller’s play, THE CRUCIBLE. Much of the action in Act III revolves around Mary’s testimony in court. She is a kind and basically honest girl who tries to do the right thing, saving her friends from harm. However, throughout Acts I and II, Mary is a follower who allows Abigail Williams to negatively influence her good judgment. To make matters worse, Mary is terrified of Abigail’s threats. Because of her weak will, the reader isn’t certain if Mary will maintain the courage to help John Proctor to win his court case in Act III.

Although she married and raised men that became such significant figures during their time, she herself played an important role in the American society. The events that happened in her life, starting from childhood and ending in her adult years, led her to be a revolutionary woman. Three main reasons behind her becoming such a strong, independent woman was the fact that she married a man who had an important role in politics, growing up with no education, and raising a family basically by herself.

Slave Rebellions were becoming common and one of the most famous was Nat Turner’s Rebellion. Led by slave preacher Nat Turner, who “became convinced that he had been chosen by God to lead his people to freedom”, a group of almost 80 slaves murdered over 60 white men, women, and children (Slave Rebellions). Maria Stewart was the first black women reported to have delivered a public speech (Coddon). She wrote a manuscript to a black audience that encouraged them not to “kill, burn, or destroy”, but rather “improve your talents… show forth your powers of mind (Coddon).” She wanted black people to know that both God and our founding documents affirmed them as equal with other men (Coddon). Being a black woman herself, she addressed other black women stating “ O, ye daughters of Africa, awake! Awake! Arise! No longer sleep nor slumber, but distinguish yourselves. Show forth the world that ye are endowed with noble and exalted faculties (Coddon).” Stewart believed that the world wasn 't going to change for the blacks, that the blacks had to change for the world, but by changes she meant show the world their worthiness and fight for their equality. Another woman fighting for equality was Sojourner Truth. Truth, formerly known as Isabella and former slave, was singer and public speaker against slavery (Coddon). SHe was the only black delegate at the Worcester, Massachusetts women’s rights convention in 1850 (Coddon).
Ruth Benedict’s anthropological book, Patterns of Culture explores the dualism of culture and personality. Benedict studies different cultures such as the Zuni tribe and the Dobu Indians. Each culture she finds is so different and distinctive in relation to the norm of our society. Each difference is what makes it unique. Benedict compares the likenesses of culture and individuality, “A culture, like an individual, is a more or less consistent pattern of thought or action” (46), but note, they are not the same by use of the word, “like.” Benedict is saying that figuratively, cultures are like personalities. Culture and individuality are intertwined and dependent upon each other for survival.
