The education and career mentoring program is a program that Misscha Tacchia created. The project includes high school seniors mentoring the high school freshman. Second part of the program is when adults who have become successful, mentor the high school seniors on what comes after high school. The adult mentors gave us some helpful information as to when we have job interviews. My educational and career goals are all planned out.
My experience with mentoring the freshman went pretty well. The freshman that seeked advice on high school from me would be named armando. I already knew him, because my mom is really good friends with his mom since i was a child. It is important to mentor others because some people need to be guided into the right path. Us senior high school students mentoring the freshman can really help them throughout their high school year. Some useful tips we gave the freshman would be to avoid getting bad grades early on. Another tip would be to join as many sports and clubs while they can. The more activities and awards they have throughout their high school year, the better their high school portfolio will end up for senior year.

The themes that stood out the most from the guest speakers would be their most challenging part of their lives. There were three speakers that stood out to me. The first speaker was named Philip Ugalde. Second speaker was named Jon Gagnog. Last speaker that stood out would have to be Kimberly Laurie. Some useful information I took out of the project would be to keep trying, even if you are really struggling throughout your educational or career life. Much like Mike, I have had some amazing academic mentors that were not afraid to get down in the trenches with me and ask what I was trying to say. I had Ms. Lewis my freshmen year of high school, she would sit down with me and rip apart my paper and rework it as necessary. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege of taking a U.W. English class that was a seminar format where the instructor would frequently conference with us, and he gave me the tools to continue my education. However, something we all need to remember, especially at PLU, is to not be afraid to be a mentor to someone else. In life, we are all teachers. We tell one another our stories, and by doing that we are teaching them what it is like to look at the world through our lens.

Tuesday at 10:00a.m., I interviewed with Dr. Ann Griffith about becoming my research mentor and working in her lab. As a potential mentor, Dr. Griffith seems to be prefect in compatibility. She has a great personality and seems to really understand my concerns and schedule. I may bond better with her because she is a woman and she understands a lot of the struggles women endure every day, especially working mothers. She has several publications, one for instance: “Metabolic Damage and Premature Thymus Aging Causes by Stromal Catalase Deficiency”. This paper really gives good insight into understanding the lab’s interest and where I may possible fit into the balance. In the course of our meeting, I was better able to assess Dr. Griffith as my potential mentor based on these aspects and other informative topics from our discussion that would personally affect me the most.

I have been a mentee in three mentoring programs and I understand from firsthand experience how important mentors have been in my life. Each relationship was very different; one of my mentors was about two generations older than me, while my two more recent mentors have been only a few years older than me.

Chapters two, five and six focused mainly on the helping relationship and the core values, empathy, and probing and summarizing as helpful skills. These three chapters seemed to flow into each other nicely.
Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Mentoring is a valuable asset in guiding person’s development.
When I was in middle school and through high school a mentor I had was an older man in my community. From this relationship I had someone who was concerned with what I was doing in school, and within the community. I also got the opportunity to learn different skills from him such as woodworking, landscaping, and the chance to further develop my communication skills. These experiences may seem like nothing, but from them I have learned that taking my time helps me produce my best work possible. At the same time I learned many life lessons from my experiences with him as well as his experiences that he shared with me. My topic for senior project is to train for a heptathlon which is a multi-event competition that requires a demanding amount of physical and mental skills. This topic is important to me because as an athlete who could possibly compete at a collegiate level I would like to challenge myself by completing the ultimate women's athletic challenge. Learning about this topic will benefit me in the future because it can help me develop vital skills needed to perform task throughout my senior year, and college. With the Heptathlon being a multi-event competition you would have to deal with stress, time management, and go through a rigorous amount of mental preparation. One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
