The biggest concern for the population in the year 2050 is mental illness. Mental illnesses are health problems that affect the way we think about ourselves. They have an impact on all of our thoughts, feelings and even our behaviour. First of all, mental illnesses currently cost the canadian economy a staggering 51-billion dollars a year. Will our government have the funds to support those with illnesses in the future? Each year employers and insurers spend $8.5 billion on long term disability claims related to mental illness. Some people may believe that because our population is quickly growing this won't be a problem, but it will. More people in our community equal more things to pay for. Culture has a huge influence on how people view and deal with psychological disorders. Being able to successfully treat someone for a mental illness has largely to do with what they view as normal in their own culture. In Western cultures we think that going to a counselor to talk about our emotions or our individual problems and/or getting some type of drug to help with our mental illness is the best way to overcome and treat it, but in other cultures that may not be the case. In particular Western and Asian cultures vary in the way they deal with psychological disorders. In this paper I am going to discuss how Asian cultures and Western cultures are similar and different in the way they view psychological disorders, the treatments and likelihood of getting treatment, culture bound disorders, and how to overcome the differences in the cultures for optimal treatments.
There are multiple criteria that come into play when determining a psychological disorder. One reason is because, it is hard to know for sure if an action is abnormal or not. Something could be abnormal in our country, but a custom in another.
As an overview, schizophrenia is a disease to the brain. It is one of the most disabling and emotionally devastating illnesses known to man. It has been misunderstood for a long time. It has a biological basis, so it is like other diseases. It is a very common disease; one percent to one and a half percent of the U.S. has been diagnosed within some point in their life. There is no cure for this disease, although there is treatable medicine. Schizophrenia is not a multiple personality disorder. People who take medicine for it are able to lead normal fulfilling lives.
Schizophrenia When a person hears the term Schizophrenia, the first thought that comes to mind is "Crazy" or "Insanity." Often confused with Disassociate Identity Disorder (a.k.a. multiple personalities), Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder that is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms and the disorganization of thought processes and emotions. Although Schizophrenia is considered one of the most severe and frequent forms of mental disorders, scientists continue to search for a cure and new forms of treatment for this incurable disease whose causes are still unknown. Of all the functional psychoses, Schizophrenia is by far the most incapacitating and a devastating brain disease which has torn apart the lives of many including victims of this disease and their families.
Then there is Undifferentiated Schizophrenia. Undifferentiated Schizophrenia is when people have symptoms of Schizophrenia that are not particularly formed or specific enough to be classified into one of the other subtypes of the illness. This person may experience delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior, catatonic behavior or negative symptoms. Making the individual not eligible to be categorized as paranoid, disorganized, or catatonic.
In a country based around free will, the United States contains a vast variety of personalities and behaviors. Plenty of people, probably more than we know, exert abnormal behavior. Abnormal behavior is patterns of emotion, thought, and action that are considered pathological. Historically, people blame witchcraft for this eccentric type of behavior and tended to perform exorcisms in hopes of abolishing such actions. Anxiety disorders and personality disorders, two forms of abnormal behavior, can alter a person’s personality as a result of life experiences.
Introduction The causes of psychoses like psychosis or schizophrenia have dominated the subject of various intense research efforts and often harsh debates. Several attempts have been made to determine whether the causes exist in the individual, are biological, intrapsychic conflict or socioenvironmental distress (Craig, Kwame, & Paul, 2008). However, some researchers hold the overriding view has been that psychosis is a heritable brain syndrome. In addition, stress-vulnerability model emphasizes that predisposing factors such as genetic composition, can make an individual be in danger of developing schizophrenic disorders.
The name The name of my book is Mental Illness by Gilda Berger. Mental illness is a disorder characterized by disturbances in a person’s thoughts, emotions, or behavior. The term mental illness can refer to a wide variety of disorders, ranging from those that cause mild distress to those that severely impair a person’s ability to function. Today, mental illness is considered to range from such ideas as eating disorders to personality disorders.
In today’s society, we have people living and interacting with us everyday that might have a psychological disorder and we don’t even know it. After watching MTV’s True Life episode, “I Have Schizophrenia,” it gives a person a in depth look into people’s lives around us and how they deal with different aspects of schizophrenia in their everyday lives and the impacts it has on other people around them.
There are many diseases and disorders that may affect the human mind. Some of these are serious, while others are minor and may not even be noticed. Some of the disorders and diseases to be covered in this report are delirium, dementia, and schizophrenia, also a discussion of specific symptoms and treatments available for the different disorders.
Clinical depression is very common. Over nine million Americans are diagnosed with clinical depression at some point in their lives. Many more people suffer from clinical depression because they do not seek treatment. They may feel that depression is a personal weakness, or try to cope with their symptoms alone. On the other hand, some people are comfortable with admitting their symptoms and seeking help. Such a discrepancy may account for the differences in reported cases of depression between men and women, which indicate that more than twice the numbers of women than men are clinically depressed. According to the numbers of reported cases of depression, 25% of women and 10% of men will have one or more episodes of clinical depression during their lifetimes.
There are times when people are plagued with thoughts, behaviors or emotions that will inhibit them from normal behavior. These are known as psychological disorders. These disorders come in many forms but all will have large effects on a person’s life.
Since it has become more understood better treatment plans have been created. There a various therapies and medications that can help manage mental health. However, there is an estimated 50 million people in America that has a mental disorder(s) and sadly only about 10 million will receive mental healthcare. Why is this? This happens simply because mental illness does not care who you are and how much money you do or do not have in the bank. Mental illnesses can effect anyone and it can be anyone of the numerous different psychological disorders. When mental illness effects a person it disrupts their whole life, this would include their daily living as well as effecting how preform at work. Take for instance, if they work a production job it can cause them not to make production. If they cannot function well enough to work at their required performance, then this could and probably would lead into them being fired from their job. Without a job they would not only lose their income but they would also have say bye-bye to their insurance plan as well. This would leave them without and mental healthcare. Did you know that if 50% of those with schizophrenia, 25% of those with anxiety disorders, 33% of those with depression are currently receiving successful treatment and the likely success rate will be around 80 to 90%? Psychologists have identified ten different types of personality disorders and categorized into three different clusters. In the beginning, the diagnostic testing for schizotypal was not very reliable, because the symptoms ranged from mild to severe, and would vary to the severity of the symptoms. Due to research, psychologists have discovered the various causes that trigger this disorder. With the new age, there has been some new advancement made toward helping and treating patients with schizotypal. It does not affect just the patient but takes a big toll on society.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
