Mental Health Nursing Personal Statement

I would suit a career in nursing because I have always been a people person. When my mother goes away to work I take care of my grandparents and my father who suffers from mental illness. My father’s illness is older than me, growing up I experienced both emotional and financial problems so I can empathise with people who have a family member who also suffers from mental illness. I enjoy having conversation with people about both positive and negative things happening in their lives and to be able to peek into their lives for a moment is always fascinating. I want to do mental health nursing because I want to make a real difference to somebody. Help patients to cope with their symptoms and life circumstances that could be by helping to take their medication or by talking.

Problem solving and logical skills from maths will aid me to use my knowledge of mental health and illness theories to solve them. Chemistry has taught me to pay attention to detail which will be beneficial when handling with patient’s reports. Although photography has not been my strongest subject I have learned various skills such as how to make people feel comfortable, working independently with self-discipline and self-direction, evaluate and reflect on my work. I have spent a few months volunteering for NHS for “Ghurkha Project” promoting facilities available at NHS and other health sectors and signposting. During our monthly meeting with my colleagues and health trainers; we discussed about progress in the project. I identified and explained few problems we were facing and suggested solutions to overcome them. After the completion of the project I spend my free time helping out in my local charity shop because I like giving something back to
