That’s where mental health counselors come in. Mental health counselors help people who have mental illnesses. One in four people will be affected with a mental illness at some point in their life, which makes mental health counselors greatly needed. A typical day for a mental health counselor usually takes place in the office and home of the counselor. Their office can be in their home, mental health centers, hospitals, and other facilities. The day starts at about six am. I wake up and get ready for the day. I eat breakfast and then i go down into my office. My first appointment is at eight-thirty so i sit down and clean the papers off my desk. At eight thirty, my first client comes. This client has severe anxiety and for a while she just sits there quietly. Eventually i get her to speak and we talk about ways to help her with her nervous ticks and what to do when she’s anxious. The enlightening interview opened my understanding to the importance of proper diagnostic coding for insurance reimbursements, the financial struggles of private practice, and the poignant effect of forensic counseling on therapist (L. Keylon, personal communication, March 26, 2010). Lea was eager to share her counseling accounts; however, the excitement of retirement planning could be seen in her demeanor. Private practice requires self-discipline, constant research for legislative changes, peer support and consultation, time management, tenacity, and patience. The encounter with Lea impressed the importance to surround myself with colleagues that are enthusiastic about learning and continuing education opportunities, to hire assistance for time-consuming administrative task, and adequately assess a proper caseload that will sustain my counseling practice and without avoid counselor burn out (L. Keylon, personal communication, March 26, 2010).
