There are many challenges in the field of mental health, which results in a crisis to improve the specialty overall. The World Health Organization (2007) stated that there is more nursing working in mental hospital or psychiatric units in the high-income regions rather than the low to middle income regions, which poses a huge problem to most of the population. One other issue is the lack of nurses specializing in mental health. This problem is formed by many causes. One of them is the stigma of the mental health specialty. In one case study by Brenda Happell and Cadeyrn J Gaskin (2012), they research the attitude of undergraduates towards mental health. It was shown that mental health is the least preferred specialty to go into. In another …show more content…
It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions.” Health promotion aims to reduce the differences of health status among people resulting to equal access to resources promoting the highest potential quality of health one can achieve. Health promotion influences many things. In the Ottawa charter there are 5 strategies of health promotion. One is to build public policies, which are said to be the foundation of all other health promotion strategies because it influences how the distribution of money, power and material resources are proportioned. Other health strategies include supportive environment, enhancing community action, and developing personal skills and reorient health services (“Ottawa Charter of Health Promotion”, 1985). The nursing role of health promotion is complex because of their knowledge is multidisciplinary (Kemppainen, Tossavianen, Turunen, 2012). Depending on their specialty their health promotion varies however; the most common used health promotions by nurses are health education, national health and social care policies (Kemppainen, Tossavianen, Turunen, …show more content…
One of the major problems why so many people have mental health is because they do not vocalize their problem. As said before, there is a challenge in the mental health specialty to recruit more psychiatric nurses caused by stigmatization Those who have a mental illness are not seen as humans and are isolated from society thus people who are mentally ill can not get the proper treatment needed to help them (Gouthro, 2009, p. 669). To reduce this stigma, education among nurses and the community is necessary. More research is needed on mental health to improve the professional practice for nurses going into mental health. improving education and awareness can break this barrier that restrains mentally ill individuals from opening up and psychiatric

Due to the endless efforts and research of certain foundations and individuals, the ideas and functions of mental health have improved significantly. The advancements made in the field are impressive and without them, humankind would not be the same. Yet then why do only fewer than eight million people who are in need of help seek treatment? National Mental Health Association, 2001. The history, stigmatization, and perception of mental illness are some of the many reasons behind that alarming statistic.... ...
In today’s society, the stigma around mental health has caused many people to fear seeking medical treatment for problems they are dealing with. With an abundance of hateful outlooks and stereotypical labels such as: crazy, psycho, and dangerous, it is clear that people with a mental illness have a genuine reason to avoid pursuing medical treatments. Along with mental health stigma, psychiatric facilities that patients with a mental health issue attend in order to receive treatment obtain an excessive amount of unfavorable stereotypes.
Mental health nurses are exposed, due a lack of community support, low staffing levels, stigma and client pressures including the risk of violence, The increasing number of mental health patient compare to the decreasing number of beds and capable staff, means that mental health nurses are spending less time per patient and potentially providing a minimum quality of care level , Moreover, mental health nurses are dealing with caring for patients in inappropriate settings, with a reduced level of ,all factors leading to an increase in stress and burnout (Barling, 2001, p. 252; MHCA, 2005, p. 3)
Health promotion is a multifaceted movement with a core value on respect, empowerment, equity, inclusion and social justice (MacDougall 2002). Aims to achieve holistic health, while it is influenced by medical and social determinants. These determinants which aids to deter...
To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to wellbeing. Health promotion goes beyond health care. It puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels. It directs policy makers to be aware of the health consequences of their decisions and accept their responsibilities for

Mental illness is a disease that is misunderstood, miscommunicated, and viewed as predominantly negative in our society. Even in ancient times, anyone thought to be mentally ill was locked away in a facility for fear that they were a danger to others. Sometimes, the mentally ill person was even thought to even be possessed. The public’s view on mental health has improved with time and education, but the mental health stigmas still exist. Being someone who works full time within a behavioral health unit, my perception of mental health and the public’s perspective of mental health significantly differ.
The mental health stigma has become a prevalent issue in the world of medical care. It can prevent people from receiving proper medical care and the quality of care people may receive. Stigma is defined as members of groups who violate the norms established by the dominant or privileged group and, as such, are marked as deviant (Jr. and Kite). Stigma can also lead to discrimination. The way we can try and diminish the severity of the stigma is to create transparency and openness about mental illness. Seeing that people are not defined by their disorder and can be successful regardless of the diagnosis. That they are not defined by their diagnosis they just have and suffer with the disorder. Also promoting education about mental health issues can diminish the myths about these issues thus lessening the amount of stigma. I have seen instances on our own campus in which they could have promoted counseling and mental health among the student body. I think the staff body could have took a more proactive approach to mental health. Instead of waiting until after students committed suicide and trying to fix the problem they could actively be promoting it regardless of the instances on the university campus. There are two different types of stigma; public and self-stigma. These stigmas can have different effects on the individual. Everyone has mental health and raising awareness about it and eliminating the stigma can help the world learn how to discuss and change this problem.
Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health promotion is commonly used term in health care world, and in current society the promotion of health has greater significance, especially with the rise in consumerism. Health promotion is a vital concept for nursing, symbolizing notions that nursing is related today. Nurses are being urged to take a health promotion role, and are deemed by others as an ideal role for them. It is therefore crucial that nurses cognize the meaning of health promotion and also what is expected from them by undertaking this
Mental illness is very common and affects thousands of people in the UK and around the world. Research shows that every year 1 in 4 British adults experience at least one mental disorder (Singleton et al, 2001, 32) and around 450 million people worldwide are estimated to have a mental health problem (World Health Organisation, 2001). Mental illness can be defined as “Medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder” (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2013). Negative stigmas of mental health are established in everyday society such as in the media, language used, policies, laws and even in the attitudes and practices of mental health professionals. Stigmatisation is very harmful to a person with a mental health illness, isolates them from society and affects personal identity (Prior et al, 2003). It is argued that stigma prevents people from disclosing that they have a mental health problem and that stigma among mental health practitioners perpetuates stigma among society and hiders proper diagnosis.
The standards of psychiatric and mental health nursing were first developed in 1995 to create a document that would describe the expectations of a mental health nurse. The standards put forth behaviours expected of professional nurses by incorporating vital information and new trends in the field, and linking these to expected outcomes (CFMHN, 2006). The teaching-coaching function standard is of great importance to the mental health field as it promotes nurses to understand the client's individual needs, supports learning related to those needs, and promotes self-reliance in aiding clients and families to acquire greater ease in living with their mental illness and the accompanying effects (Lawlor, n.d.). Such teaching provides the nurses with a chance to make a difference ...
Mental illness is a condition that affects the way a person thinks, feels that will eventually change an individual ability to relate well with others (Boyd, 2017). This situation is considered to be a disability that has a long-term effect on patients whose suffering from it. Working with a person who is suffering from mental illness may not be manageable at first because they’re is too much pressure on what they might do wrong which leads to lack of insecurity (Knapp 2014). As a nurse being around a mentally ill patient, one must encourage and support good mental health and well-being of the individual. Anxiety of the unknown can be expected on the first day of clinical’s because I did not know if the patient that they are working with will
Introduction Understanding mental illness in today’s society can be extremely difficult if an individual is unaware of the signs and symptoms. Some people do not seek to understand this population unless it benefits the individuals personally and/or professional. In order to help those and stop the stigma of mental illness, it will take the community to help create more resources and awareness. Investing time to receive awareness and training can help the mental health population as a whole. The stigma of mental health can be reduced tremendously if individual understood the population.
