Mental Health Awareness Panel
I participated in the Mental Health Awareness Panel on Wednesday the 16th here at Bemidji State University (BSU). The Mental Awareness Panel was a great experience. There was an LPN-psychiatric nurse who shared her son’s story and four students also shared their stories about surviving multiple suicide attempts. The psychiatric nurse lost her eighteen-year-old son from suicide right before his prom. The mother stated that her son was humble, easy to get along with, everybody wanted to be around, and played baseball for his school. Before committing suicide, the son reached out to two of his best friends. The two best friends helped him through tough times and kept it secret, but he end up committing suicide. This student was bullied by students and teachers in middle school and was called “attention seeking” because the student would not get close to people and was always alone. High school was better than middle school, the student stated: “I got to play sports.” The student had great skills, which her coach praised her for, but ended up getting kicked out of sports because she did not have the social skills. Later in high school, the student got to the point where she was even afraid of her own shadow, always thinking people are talking about her and out to get her, so the student was terrified by people. The student would not get out of bed, shower, and would not go to school. She was always late to school, skipped classes, and almost did not graduate. Freshman year in college was even worse for the student, she got into an abusive relationship, which made the student’s self esteem go down even more. While taking data, I have worked with this child to increase behaviors with reinforcement, teach new skills, and to reduce interfering behaviors, which can include self-injury. During the past year, I completed an online suicide talk session, which explores suicide prevention as well as becoming a Certified Mental Health First Aider. I also became a suicide and crisis line volunteer, giving emotional support for individuals experiencing emotional or situational distress, various forms of mental illness and in need of general information or referrals. Prisons act as a total institution where inmates are put on a strict schedule and fall under one of the most gruesome forms of social control. Because of this, many inmates rebel resulting in prisons having to increase security and impose stricter punishments. As a result of this, less effort has been put into helping mentally ill inmates. The term panopticon, coined by Bentham illustrates the concept that the prison design would allow guards to see into cells but not allowing prisoners to see out. Thus, this would allow guards to have omniscient power over the inmates. Fortunately, this never worked as a prison, however prison has created a type of mental health panopticon. This allows for mentally ill parents to feel like they are always being observed; similarly to that of an experiment. Despite prisons best attempt to equally serve all inmates to the best of their ability, prioritizing security and punishment has lead to a mental health panopticon. As a result, prisons environments have exacerbated negative behaviours, created an inhumane environment for prisoners and lack the means to aid in mental health.

The policy analysis is based on the increasing numbers of cases on mental health issues in college and university campuses. The topic is supported by evidential data collected from various studies and peer-reviewed articles that show the statistical prevalence of the most common forms of mental health issues seen among the students, which shows that the prevalence rate is ever-increasing. The methodologies recommended for implementation include increased availability of resources and facilitating the accessibility of these resources through overcoming barriers. It is expected that public school nurses will be successful in their interventions, and students will sign up for counseling sessions and group meetings. The emotional health and wellbeing for our children should be the greatest importance to a parent. Four million children and adolescents in the United States live with serious mental disorders (Hamburg, 2006). Some conditions include depression, anxiety disorders, which are the most frequent that may later on lead to drug abuse. Some develop eating disorders that include bulimia and anorexia, others develop attention deficits, become hyperactive or antisocial behavioral responses that may limit the ability to think and learn and form social attachments or communicate with others. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health disorders are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Three of the ten leading causes of disability in people between the ages of 15 and 44 are mental disorders and the other cases are often associated with mental disorders and research has shown that most mental disorders begin in childhood and in adolescence (2009). Poor mental health can have an effect on wider health and development of adolescents in associations with social outcomes such as higher alcohol, tobacco and illicit substances, pregnancy, school dropout and even the act of wrong behaviors of a child.

In 2003 President Bush’s created the, New Freedom Commission on Mental Health which outlines a plan to move forward in increasing early intervention and screening for children and adolescents. The report suggests that no one body or organization is charge of mental health care of children and adolescents. However schools and teachers are in the best position to provide support to young people because of the consistent exposure teachers have with their students. The report also suggests that because one’s mental health is so tightly intertwined with one’s educational success, that teachers play a vital role in identifying warning signs and linking students to services (Hogan et al., 2003, p. 58). These school based services have the potential to reach more vulnerable and potentially underserved populations with better opportunities to engage parents and the community in services. In order to provide optimum services, care, and proper interventions in schools things like stigma attached to receiving mental health services need to be addressed as well for students to feel comfortable obtaining care. The other necessity is also providing the teachers and counselors in schools the proper training and support based on evidenced based practices (Mills et al. 2006, p.155).

In the past 35 years the suicide rate for college campuses has tripled (Oswalt 1995). This shows that there is a clear need for something to be addressed within the college community. The recent surveys show that about 10-15% of college students are depressed (Lindsey 2009). Depression can be a debilitating illness especially when many students attend college away from their close friends and family. This could result in students with more suicidal thoughts and attempts at suicide. In fact, the number of students with suicidal thoughts has tripled over the past 13 years as the number of students seeking help for depression doubled in the same span (Lindsey 2009). A young anonymous college freshman tells a story of the depression she faced throughout her first semester of college, through the transition and her roommate issues. Not only did it occur during her first semester, but through her second as well. Unfortunately, the depression overtook her life to the point of her desire to commit suicide. Luckily, she changed her mind in the last second and saved herself (Reachout.com). This young student is not just one of few depressed college students, but she is one of many. Colleges must take more responsibility of mental health issues, like depression, by researching the causes and effects while discovering beneficial treatments that promote the students’ overall well being.
Once school started she began to feel shy and nervous. She didn’t know why people were treating her differently. She started feeling judged and isolated when fellow students and even teachers were tormenting her. The worst thing was, she didn’t know why. For example, a student told her she was from a different country and all her friends were black but Sandra exclaimed “I’m not black!”
Government’s policies on mental health care have not materialized nor helped those with mental illnesses the way they were intended. Insurance companies continue to cheat the mentally ill of affordable treatment; mental hospitals are persistent on not releasing patients for years, robbing others of medical care; sick and unable to hold steady jobs, homelessness becomes the only option for many; irrational decisions become rational and crime becomes viable. With a rebuilding of the mental health care system, stricter rules on parity insurance, and reduced stigmas, crime would lower, the homeless would dissipate, and more Americans would lead normal, healthy lives.
