The University of Memphis is an exceptional facility to attend due to the many opportunities that it offers to its students. The opportunities range from honor programs, study abroad trips, and internships. I was lucky enough to have been chosen to participate in an internship which correlates with my determined major. The University of Memphis undergraduate internship offers many benefits such as experience, course credit, and confidence. However, I was faced with some challenges that I believe could easily be adjusted by the coordinators of this program and the Criminal Justice Department.
The experience I obtained from interning at the General Sessions Court was exactly as I had hoped. I worked closely with the clerks and senior clerks.

I was giving the opportunity of witnessing a few preliminary hearings and gained insight of lawyers in full force. Some hearings were very serious while others were surprising to watch. I was also giving the chance by Mr. Shelton, who is the administrator, to shadow an attorney. That was probably the best day I had at General Sessions Court because he took me to criminal court; I was able to watch the introduction of the case. Criminal court is more intense than the other courts I visited. The atmosphere in criminal criminal court is exactly what I needed to experience in my internship; criminal court assured me that I can commit tot the challenging job of an attorney and be successful. In addition to obtaining experience, I also obtained course credit because of my participation in the internship …show more content…
Every Tuesday and Thursday for eight weeks, I attended General Sessions Court. I checked-in at 8 in the morning and clocked out at 4;30 in the evening. Initially, I was not mentally ready for the early morning and late evening shift. I dreaded the thought of rush hour in Memphis. However, the internship gave me the opportunity to attempt and now I am confident I can master the long hours. I also gained confidence in the field I am going into because of General Sessions Courts. Exploring into a new world is frightening and reassurance becomes a conversation desired regularly. That is why I am most of all thankful for the individuals within 201
Paradise Lost is the first of three documentaries chronicling the story of the West Memphis Three (Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelly) and the allegations made against them regarding the mutilations and murders of Christopher Byers, Michael Moore and Steven Branch. The film gives an insight into the investigation of the case with a great deal of detail using crime scene footage, court hearings and interviews.
Memphis is considered to be a dangerous city by many around the country with not many attractions besides Martin Luther king, jr. What they do not know is that Memphis is full of rich music and history. Various genres have made an impact on people’s daily lives such as gospel, soul, funk, blues, jazz, R&B, pop, country, and rap. Stax records were found in in 1957 which was known as satellite radio at the time. Stax has made a major impact on helping the lives of people in Memphis. Stax has overlooked the obstacles of color and racism by giving many artists of different races the opportunity they dreamed of. Stax has made a major impact by helping the lives of people in Memphis, breaking color and racism barriers, and most importantly by making music. (Stax Museaum)
Presley, Isaac Hayes, and Otis Redman. However, one of that artist that does not get the
Some of the fields that are included within the internship program now involve Department of Patrol Services, Department of Detention Services, Specialty Units (HSD- Homeland Security and CID- Criminal Investigation Division), Digital Communication Dispatch, and Child Protection Investigation Division. Some of the fields that I have experienced so far are the Department of Patrol Services and the Department of Detention Services. The Department of Detention Services includes Jail Division I which is the booking portion at Orient Road Jail, Jail Division II which is the housing portion at Falkenburg Road Jail, Jail Division III which is the transportation portion around the entire Hillsborough County, and Court Services which is at the courthouses in downtown Tampa. I also have participated in the Department of Patrol Services out of District II, which is around the USF area.
Internships completed by students in certain degree programs are quite popular in most colleges and universities. An internship is used so classroom based learning in a degree program can be applied to practical situations in the real world (Jordan, Burns, Bedard & Barringer, 2007). When students are placed with an agency, there is a real possibility that a portion of students will witness actions they believe is unethical or illegal. During a study conducted within four universities, many students that participated in an internship program within the criminal justice system reported that they had observed behavior they suspected to be illegal behavior for a law enforcement agency. (Jordan et al. 2007). Due to this ongoing problem, colleges
Gaines, I could picture myself possibly acclimating to this environment. Many of the qualities he touched upon, I believe I already obtain some of these traits. I believe that my internship has helped me greatly this past five weeks helped me improve on my people skills and how to accomplish my job in a timely manner. I have always been a people person with good communication skills. I feel that would be most helpful when interviewing the victims without further traumatizing them. Convincing victims and witness to talk to me so I can gather necessary information to present to the federal prosecutor for an arrest warrant that may be needed. My organizational skills would help in keeping proper documents that are relevant to a
Completing the State Highway Patrol internship was an amazing experience. My very first Day being an intern, my Mentor Trooper Bachelor Took me to the Training academy there I met many different people I was able to talk to a state recruiter. Also I was able to see the cadets and see a little bit of their training.
Something happened my sophomore year of high school that little did I know would change my perspective, not only of myself, but life in general. I was looking for something new and exciting to enhance my high school existence and decided to give the Criminal Justice Club a try. I was familiar with the advisor of the club, but knew that the club had astigmatism for attracting those students who were just looking for something easy to do. I knew about the criminal justice system, but only what they show on Law and Order. However, I immediately fell in love, not only with the club but the entire prospect of Criminal Justice. I stepped into the club as if it were a place I belonged and easily became a leader. I was able to learn things the TV shows
The Unites States Marshals service has been a very beneficial internship. The Marshals were all very nice and informative. They had me taking care of the front desk. More days than not, there was filing of medical papers for the year 2015 and the year 2016. Some people have a large stack of papers because they are always needing medical attention while in custody. The next thing I do is answer the phone. This happens to be one of the more interesting tasks. You really never know who it is going to be or what they are going to say. If needed, I transfer the individuals to other people whom can help them. I also attend court hearings throughout the day. These hearings can be from many different
As an intern at P.S. 137, my outlook of the school and the neighborhood in which it is situated has drastically changed over the past semester. My initial commute to the school did not help me frame the community in a positive light. I found there to be too many potholes, and too much trash scattered across its streets. I was not familiar with this area, and do not recall having any preexisting biases towards the residents. I remember the first time I pulled into the school’s never-ending parking lot, and felt flutters in my stomach as I thought of how small one may feel in such a large institution. I also questioned what I was doing interning in a school known for its corruptness. P.S. 137 has a bad reputation for giving students credit for eating lunch, of having students who take lewd pictures of staff members, and for the multitudes of gangs in which the students take part.
In this speech I show why being a district lawyer the better profession for me. As you can se I can improve it and I have good plans to be it.
Additionally, one gets to see how justice is administered and whether what people say about the justice system is true or false. Therefore, by visiting the courtroom, I have to understand that the administration of justice is fair.
My experience at the Wisconsin Court of Appeals was an extremely valuable one. As someone who was interested in doing a clerkship after I graduate, it was great to see the procedure used by a law clerk at an appellate state court. Although some of the work done will not seem difficult, it is very important that an intern try to find the learning objective in each task. There are many different outlets in the Court of Appeals that will be there for support, including law clerks, assistants, and other interns. I would recommend asking questions as many times as you feel necessary to build a relationship with each person.
For my field experience, I chose to attend a court case. On October 14th, 2015 I went to the District of Columbia court and watched a sentencing. It was not at all what I initially expected although after sitting in class for several weeks I was not shocked by it. What surprised me most was the informal, personal nature that the whole process had. The experience was interesting and I feel that I learned a lot from it.
The majority of organizations that offer internship programs desire to have successful programs that benefit both the organization and the student. In the article “10 Best Practices for Business Student Internships” found in the academic journal, Strategic Finance, authors Kurt Reding and David O’Bryan discuss 10 practices that organizations should follow in order to have successful internships and the benefits to those involved in the program. Reding and O’Bryan evaluated feedback from previous students involved in internship programs and these organizations themselves to decide the most important factors that companies should implement in order to benefit the company and the student during the process. These practices create a strong foundation for companies to follow and for students to look for when searching for a program.
