Memories are ideas that we hold on to and should never let go. We all want to experience our happy memories again and go back to the great times in life. Oscar Lavant has a skewed view of humanity. He believes that he is always right and that everybody should be like him. He had great moments in his career that he wishes he could experience again. “Happiness is not something you experience; it is something you remember.” I agree with this quote because you never realize how special and fun something is in the moment. I never appreciate something that is special until the moment is over. I remember Little League baseball, Elementary school, and Middle school basketball. These memories are special to me and it is exciting to look back at them. To begin with, Little League Baseball is a great memory to look back on. I loved baseball as a kid, but I never realized how much I loved it until it was over. I used to hate going to baseball practice every day as a kid. Now, I would trade anything to go back to those times. I never realized how special and fun Little League baseball was until it was over. I want to go back to my days of playing with my old teammates. Looking back at it now, I wish I still had the opportunity to relive this memory. I remember having recess every day and the school work being easier than it is now. While I was in Elementary school, I never realized how fun and simple life was. Have you ever wondered what allows us to be aware of the present? It is actually the past! Without knowledge of past information, we would be constantly confused during the present and incapable of almost everything. Hockenbury & Hockenbury (2012) describes memory to be, “…the mental processes that enable us to acquire, retain, and retrieve information”. Without the presence of either of these three processes, the other two would be obsolete. Many experiments have been conducted to better understand these processes and break them down into their basic components.
Community building can depict an idea of people coming together for a common purpose. The purpose may be unclear on why people are becoming a union, though it may involve the inclusion of people. In “Once Upon a Time” and “Rituals of Memory” both include the gathering of people, however the reasons for their togetherness are very different.
The mammalian brain contains several different memory systems, which can be divided into declarative and non-declarative memory systems. Declarative memory can be further divided into episodic and semantic memory, and non-declarative memory can be divided into priming, associative learning, and procedural memory.
This chapter “Memory Inc.” was unfortunately a very different type of chapter for me. The concept of this chapter was to test our memory. It had different views of scientists arguing different things about the effect of memory. Lauren Slater mentioned this, “Dr. Scoville had an idea. He suspected Henry’s seizures might be kindling deep in the wetlands of the temporal lobes, a little spark quickly catching flame in a supposedly toss-away of the brain: the hippocampus” (205). Can we really cure and help something by offering a surgery or doubling the dosage of narcotics? It was said that our past can leave us in an instance, memory problems will always be there, as a person we just hold onto what we want to.
Memory is the tool we use to learn and think. We all use memory in our everyday lives. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. We all reassure ourselves that our memories are accurate and precise. Many people believe that they would be able to remember anything from the event and the different features of the situation. Yet, people don’t realize the fact that the more you think about a situation the more likely the story will change. Our memories are not a camcorder or a camera. Our memory tends to be very selective and reconstructive.
Many memories are embedded in our brain. Some are more retrievable than others. But, how accurate are memories? Just because we can retrieve that specific memory, doesn’t mean its one hundred percent true. It may have not occurred that way or there might not have been that person within that specific memory. Memories are like dreams in many ways. The only way to remember a certain dream is to go back to that specific state of mind where you were before.
Memory is part of our everyday lives, without it we would not know how to approach new experiences from past experiences in order to learn from them. Memory is acquired information we get from the world called acquisition and the way we keep the information is in our storage or in other words memory. I think it is important to have memory in order to learn and receive new information that happens everyday and remember what has once happened. My first stop when I go to the grocery store is the produce section. Besides the normal lettuce, peppers, celery; weekly purchases, I usually look for fruit that is in season. So being mid summer with the heat/humidly being the norm, I journeyed towards the watermelon display crate. There I found an elderly lady bent over the crate side attempting to reach a melon. I hurried over to help her to get one, but saw that she was knotting on each watermelon she could reach. The lady proceeded to stop after each knot and listen as getting some inter response from each melon regarding its ripeness. I join in with my own tapping and tried to act like I knew exactly the right sound pitch I was looking for. The lady noticing my attempt, told me it’s better if you use a spoon, which she forgot to bring, but when you tap each one it’s easier to hear each melon’s pitch sound. Just then I envision her doing this as a crowd gathers around the melon crate to watch her “spoon melons”. She informs me they should sound like a bongo drum to be a good one. Holding one of the heavy melons close to my ear, I listen as hoping to hear some drumming echoing response, like when you shout in a canyon and the reply echoing its ghostly retort. We
Misinformation, the intentional or unintentional spread of false information, has been shown to alter, suppress, or impair a person’s memory of an original event (Loftus & Palmer, 1974). The earliest experiments that studied false memories found that information provided to an eyewitness after an event can alter that person’s memory of this event; when exposed to leading questions or additional information following the event, participants were more likely to forget the actual details of the event and answer with respect to the incorrect post-event information (Loftus & Palmer, 1974; Loftus, 1975; Loftus, 1977).

A lot of the problem could very well be what forms of techniques they are using to study. To be able to find the best way to study a student needs to realize the ways in which information is stored. It is the goal of this paper to help students to better study and identify ways in which they can achieve this. The paper will include how information is made into a memory, how study habits can affect this by using my own example, and showcase three recommendations that psychologists have given for effective studying. These being effective note taking, the keyword technique, and practice and rehearse technique and how they have helped me become a better student.
