Information Processing Theory
The Information Processing Theory can be described as how the memory processes or absorbs information. The theory correlates with learning because is known as our memory process; processing and storing data. This theory is broken down into three groups: working memory, short term memory and long term memory. Short term memory is known as sensory store. Information is usually stored for one to two seconds. When attend to, the information in sensory store moves to the working memory. Working memory can last about five to fifteen seconds. If information is not stored or encoded, it is subjected to being considered memory loss. However if the information is encoded or rehearsed, it is stored in long term memory. Long term memory allows

All three memory banks work in the Executive Control System. The information that is stored in our long term memory can be considered to be implicit or explicit memories. Implicit memories are known but can’t be articulated; things they become natural. Explicit memories are memories are able to be brought up and talked about. There are several factors that can influence memory storage. Some of these factors are: other senses being used, personal significance, environment and emotion. There are several strategies used to help memorize information. Examples of these strategies are rote learning and organization. The information processing is compared to information being stored on a computer hard drive. Some may believe that one information is stored it can not be altered. However, those are just assumptions of information processing. A strength of this theory is that gives individuals a process in which they can remember information. It helps decipher how minds will store information and how improvement can be made. A weakness of this theory is that individuals are unable to multitask and remember at the same time. Finally, the MSM model of memory states that all information is stored in the long term memory, however, this interpretation contrasts with that of Baddeley (1974) who argue that we store different types of memories and it is unlikely that they occur only in the LTM store. Additionally, other theories have recognised different types of memories that we experience, therefore it is debatable that all these different memories occur only in the long-term memory as presumed by the multi-store model which states the long term memory store as with unlimited capacity, in addition it also fails to explain how we recall information.

This essay addresses the working memory model which was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch (1974 in Smith & Kosslyn, 2007) as a response to Atkinson and Shiffrins (1968 in Smith, 2007) multi-store model. According to Baddely and Hitch the multi-store model failed to explain most of the complexities of the human memory and viewed it as being too simplistic. They argued that the short term memory store must have more components rather it being a single inflexible store as suggested previously by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). The working memory model is therefore an enhancement of the multi store model. According to Baddeley and Hitch working memory is a limited- capacity system that stores and processes information.

The sensory memory has a set of registers - one for each sense - that stores information temporarily and it‘s moved into the STM. Here the information is recognised from Sensory memory and it lasts for around 15-30 seconds unless it’s rehearsed where it then would travel to the LTM. Miller 1956 studied the STM capacity and found it was the “magic numbers 7 plus or minus 2” and that it only retains 5-9 pieces of information. Another form of memory is chunking, where pieces of information are grouped together into chunks and it is known to increase the amount of items stored.

We use our memory about the past to help us understand the present. The study or memory in psychology is used in different ways, as well as there are many different ways to study how memory works in humans. In psychology there are many tasks used to measure memory, and different types of memory storages that human's use, such as sensory storing, or short term storing. There are also a lot of techniques that humans use to improve their memory, which they can use to learn, such as mnemonic devices.
