Short term memory is the focal point at that specific moment a human can notice, more specifically what holds your attention that causes you to focus in. The three parts are rote rehearsal, elaborative rehearsal, and schemata. Rote rehearsal is mechanized to remember the most tedious things such as names, phone numbers, addresses, passwords, social security numbers, etc. Elaborative rehearsal is linking new information to the things we already know about and it makes the new information much more meaningful. Mnemonics helps to make new information easier to remember such as songs or hymns, or the amount of days in a year. Notes that are recorded from lecture or video content in class is or has to be elaborated in a days time by review. Elaboration sort of interprets the notes you have take or even shortens them giving the added ideas and pursues supporting sources other than lectures or publication of some sort. This investigation looks at retrieval failure in the long-term memory, particularly context-dependant forgetting. The theory behind retrieval failure is that available information stored in the long-term memory cannot be accessed because the retrieval cues are defective. Cue-dependant forgetting theory focuses on the assumption that the context in which we learn something is significant when we come to recall the information. Recall is better if it takes place in the same context as the learning. Research conducted on retrieval failure includes Tulving and Pearlstone (1966) who studied intrinsic cues by asking subjects to learn a list of words from different categories.
Mechanical or rote repetition of the information is a great way to remember this information. The more time you spend rehearsing the information the longer the information will be remembered. This is actually a poor way of remembering things because it doesn’t make the information meaningful; “surface processing”. Elaborative Rehearsal is a more effective way of remembering information through “deep processing”, which is relating the information to information you already know. This technique is used in more in the education system than maintenance rehearsal. Even with these two ways to store things we still run into filling errors. Filling errors are where your brain has filed information incorrectly. The final step in the memory process is retrieval. Retrieval is the locating of stored information and returning it into your conscious thoughts. There are a few cues that help us retrieve them, such as priming, context, and state. Priming is the nonconscious identification or words and objects, by referring in to particular representations or associations in the memory just before carrying out the action or task. The memories that come back to your conscious mind when you are in a certain place or area are called context, dependent memories. The definition of working memory is the part of short-term memory that is concerned with immediate conscious perceptual and linguistic processing. Mnemonics are quite relevant to explicit memory, or the cognitive system that stores conscious memories. These memories include episodic memories, or memories of specific situations that were previously encountered, and semantic memory, or memories regarding understanding of the world (Gazzaniga et al., 2011). Mnemonics truly facilitate the active retrieval of these memories. For example, by using the method by loci type of mnemonic, or associating a memory with physically placed objects in a familiar room, it is easier for an individual to recall the episodic memory of a person’s name. This is because the easily envisioned locations of the objects in the room cue the memory of the person’s name.

The brain takes in the information but does not store it for more than a few seconds. Short-term memory is the second step where the brain works on the information obtained from sensory memory. Sensory memory is not long-term, meaning it is not stored very long. Long-term memory is the brain’s ability to store short-term memory into information that can later be retrieved. Long-term memory does not have a length of time that it is stored. It is archived in the brain and can be retrieved minutes, days, and many years later after it is stored.
In daily life, memory is used all the time. When we go to buy things, we would remember the list of items what we are going to buy. At school, we would also need to have revision in order to remember the materials for examination. Or even, when we meet friends, we would also need to recall their names. Thus it is important to know and understand how we remember such things so that we can effectively recall them when necessary. Obviously, we do not need to remember the exact position or order of things in daily life. We would have our own pattern for remember and retrieve information (Ashcraft, 2010). This is named as free recall, which items recalled in any order (Francis, Neath, MacKewn and Goldthwaite, 2004). However, many researchers found that the probability of recalling items (such as words, letters, or numbers) does in fact depend on the items position in a list. The most striking finding is that words at the beginning and end of the list are often easier to recall than those words in the middle of the list. Thus, when the results of a free recall experiment are plotted on a graph; a u-shaped serial position curve can be obtained. This is often referred to as the serial position effect that is affecting our memory (Smith, n.d.).
The five types are Memory is classified by a few different characteristics. Declarative Memory is the memory of dates, historical facts, and telephone numbers (Silvia Cardoso). It is easier to build up Declarative Memory but can be easily forgotten as well. Procedural Memory is the memory/ability to drive a car, to play sports and tie shoes. This type of memory involves repetitive practices. The other of types of memory is Elaboration, Self Referent and Visual Imagery. Elaboration is known as memory associating with other information. Self Referent Memory is how it is made personally relevant. Then, there is Visual Imagery, which can be used in a few ways, one of which can be used to add richness to the material to be remembered.

With a lot of practice, children master these skills so well that they are able to remember them the rest of their lives. Memory is the storing of information over time. It is one of the most important concepts in learning; if things are not remembered, no learning can take place. As a process, memory refers to the "dynamic mechanism associated with the retention and retrieval of information about past experiences" (Sternberg 260). We use our memory about the past to help us understand the present. The study or memory in psychology is used in different ways, as well as there are many different ways to study how memory works in humans. In psychology there are many tasks used to measure memory, and different types of memory storages that human's use, such as sensory storing, or short term storing. There are also a lot of techniques that humans use to improve their memory, which they can use to learn, such as mnemonic devices. All these things can be classified as important issues in the study of human memory and ways of learning.
