A military man from a young age, he served as a lieutenant in the British Army and then later served as a captain during the French and Indian War, where he fought in the North American campaign. Gates eventually moved to Virginia in 1772 not long before the break out of the American Revolutionary War, where he was appointed an officer in the Continental Army. He appropriately brought up the issue of inequities during the commencement because as the speech was for the graduates, Mr. Gates believed these people are more capable of making the changes for the world. These people are about to start their life journey, thus it is important for them to see the issues lying ahead to make positive impact for the future.
