Long Island-native Melanie Martinez makes arty, alternative singer/songwriter pop that straddles the line between folk, electronica and hip-hop. Born in Baldwin, New York, Martinez grew up listening to her father's Beatles records and hip-hop music. In 2012, while still in high school, she won a spot on NBC's The Voice with her performance of Britney Spears' "Toxic."(Billboard 1). She clearly grew up with music as a norm in her life, therefore she had some originality towards her music. “She was born in Baldwin, New York. Her grandmother has had a big impact on her. She began a relationship with producer Michael Keenan.”(Famousbirthdays 1). There isn't much there but overall, she seems close to at least her grandmother she slod seemed pretty normal when it came to her lifestyle. “Melanie Martinez has always felt like an outsider. " I was picked on when I was younger because I was super emotional," says the 21 year old singer/songwriter, who grew up on New York's Long Island."I didn't have a lot of friends"(Carroll, 2). One of the most well known figures of the twentieth century pottery world is Maria Martinez. Maria Martinez is a Pueblo Indian part of the San Ildefondo tribe. Pueblo pottery from the American Southwest holds a unique place in ceramic art forms of American art. It is full of age-old tradition and culture handed down form family members and potters of the past. The old Pueblo ways of creating it still hold true today and have not been changed or influenced like so many other styles in modern times.
Jenni Rivera, born Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra, was born in Long Beach, CA. She grew up in poverty, and with four brothers she was a tom boy. She learned to defend herself at a young age. “I soon developed the reputation as the girl who beats up boys.” This taught her how to respect herself in the music industry. Despite her boyish ways she loved to sing. She would compete at bars with her dad. He early singing career made her realize she could make good money and provide for her family by singing.
My first knowledge of her came from the movie that was produced about her life. This movie included her childhood, her rise to fame, her relationships with her family and her husband, and her untimely death. She was a stunning flower that bloomed very young and kept growing with no sight on stopping. She had a gorgeous appearance. She had big brown eyes, ever changing hair styles, and a petite figure. Her husband was just as cute. A smaller guy but not too small. Selena and Chris fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I developed a deep admiration for these two people and the things they experienced in their youth. I was always looking to learn more about their lives and what happened in Selena's tragic end that shook the world. After finding out that her widow wrote a book about her life, I was excited to get it and begin reading. I wondered if the movie had been completely valid. What did the movie leave out? How did Chris felt about her death? How does he feel now about all that transpired after Selena's death since this was not a perspective that the audience got to clearly see the movie? So, I went immediately, to buy the
The protagonist both struggled in their childhood. In addition, both protagonists grew up in families with parents, who were not keen about their children’s life, for instance, Sonia’s parents used to fight all the time, while Martinez parents were uncaring and abusive. Sonia’s relationship with her mother was not that good and this applies to Martinez too. Both protagonists came in terms with their upbringing and had to work hard to change their life situations. In both stories, the theme of poverty is evident in both the

She said, “I’m thankful to the lord that I survive that hit.” She wasn’t a normal child when she was growing up because she would just work with her parents and not plays like other kids. She wanted to have a normal childhood, but she had to work with her parents. She described
...hy I chose to do my case study on Lila Downs is because she is a strong indigenous woman who has come to realize and appreciate her culture and her people. She doubted her blood once, but know she is proud of who she is. I admire her music; she keeps it traditional as her ancestors would once, and adds her own spice to it. The way that her music is, contributes to her listeners such in Oaxaca and other Latin American countries who listens to her. She is the voice for the indigenous people, as she writes song that advocate for their mistreatment. Also Lila Downs doesn’t compose songs as any other singer/composer would, she tries to make a connection with the diverse audiences. I appreciate the fact that Downs writes song about political and social justice and immigration not only that but I like how she implies her own dialects into her music and cultural background.
Selena Quintanilla-Perez was an artist in the Tejano music industry that contributed to revolutionizing the style of music in the United States today. The Tejano music genre is originated from Texas but it may be called Tex-Mex because of its Mexican background. Selena absolutely loved her fans so she went to great lengths in order to keep her fans happy. (Angelfire 2) Her rise to stardom was also very successful thanks to the support and persistence from her father. She won a lot of awards and achieved amazing records in her musical career. The band that her family formed not only helped her find fame but it also helped her find love in a musician named Chris Perez.(Hispanic 2) Once she rose to stardom Selena was not corrupted by money. It appeared that her fame made her cherish her family a lot more and become less selfish by supporting charities. (Biography 1) The brink of her successful career was short lived due to a traumatic murder caused by the betrayal of Yolanda Saldivar. Selena was a Tejano artist that changed the style of music by uniting a clash of several cultures and therefore leaving a mark in history even after her death. (Texas 2)
Known as the “Queen of Tejano” and the “Mexican Madonna”, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was the adored Latin singer who sadly did not get to live to see all of the success of her career. One of her most famous quotes is, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will (PhilosIblog, 2014).” That is just what Selena did and she made sure that her legacy would live on for years. Selena surely left a her mark in this world with the help of her family, in her short lived 23 years. Selena was an amazing singer, she even made it very far in a genre of music that was dominated by men. Selena Quintanilla-Perez is an influential person because of her loving personality, her music career, her determination to succeed in a genre that was only men, and her success with her music that will never stop playing even if she is not here.
The person that I chose for the Womens History Month report is Maria Mitchell, who was a self- taught astronomer. She discovered Comet Mitchell and made amazing achievements throughout her life. Maria Mitchell was born on August 1, 1818 on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket to William and Lydia Mitchell. When Maria Mitchell was growing up in the Quaker community, few girls were allowed to study astronomy and higher mathematics. Even though the Mitchell's weren't rich Maria's father, a devoted amateur( most astronomers of that time were amateurs) astronomer, introduced her to mathematics and the night sky. He also encouraged her toward teaching and passed on a sense of God as in the natural world. By the time Maria was sixteen, she was a teacher of mathematics at Cyrus Pierce's school for young ladies where she used to be a student. Following that she opened a grammar school of her own. And only a year after that, at the age of eighteen she was offered a job as a librarian at Nantucket's Atheneum during the day when it opened to the public in the fall of 1836. At the Atheneum she taught herself astronomy by reading books on mathematics and science. At night she regularly studied the sky through her father's telesscope. For her college education even Harvard couldn't have given her a better education than she received at home and at that time astronomy in America was very behind as of today. She kept studying at the Atheneum, discussed astronomy with scientists who visited Nantucket (including William C. Bond), and kept studying the sky through her father's lent telescope.
Natalie Angier, a well-known author of multiple books and journalist for The New York Times, began her post-secondary education at the University of Michigan and finished at Barnard College, graduating with a high honor. Later on in her life, she published a controversial article in The New York Times over evolutionary psychology. According to Angier, evolutionary psychology refers to “the fundamental modules of human nature, most notably the essential nature of man and of woman” (Angier 161). Within the article, Men, Women, Sex, and Darwin, Angier attempts to argue against theories of evolutionary psychology by diving into the differences between men and women through cardinal premises. Angier provides a strong argument against theories of
Following her heart, she continued pursuing her dreams; winning fancy cakes and more opportunities to showed her talent. Her big break was in 1950 when La Sonora Matancera was looking for a new leading singer, because her previous singer Mirtha Silva decided to quit to returned to her native Puerto Rico. Even though Celia Cruz was rough around the edges, they decided to give her a break. A lot of people call local radio station complaining about Cruz, also the executive in the industry did not believe that a female singer could sell albums. She proved them wrong. Celia ‘s perseverance ove...
People who are different and ready for a change can be scary, society is one of the first people scared. Society pushes away people who are different from the norms. This happened in a time overlooked by many people. This was the time the young lords spent in New york. Kids and teenagers banded together to make as much as a difference as possible. Many tried to make a non-violent movement and were still shot down and told to silence their movement. Many middle aged Puerto Ricans raised in the United States disagreed with the action plan of the Young Lords, they believed the young lords were just causing trouble in each city they arrived in. They refuse to allow the idea of change into their mind as well as the minds of their children. They didn’t want the fight to make things worse for Puerto Rico’s freedom.
Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1970. She was born in the United States to Puerto Rican Parents, Jennifer considers herself to be a Puerto Rican and she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Her father is David Lopez, a computer specialist, and her mother Guadalupe Lopez, a Kindergarten teacher. Her parents recognized Jennifer’s talent and enthusiasm for performing and at the age of five the enrolled her in dance classes. Her mother said “Jennifer always loved to sing, but she was also a great actress and knew that she would have a bright future ahead of her.” With the support of her parents Jennifer grew up to be a very sensible girl, who is still very close to her family. When Jennifer earned her million-dollar paycheck for playing the role in the movie Selena, she bought her mom a Cadillac. Even though they saw Jennifer’s talent at the age of five, their relationship was not always understandable. Jennifer made a major decision and that was not to go to College. That decision was very disappointing to her parents who wanted her to go to law school. Her parents supported her pursuit of a career in show business, they did not wanted to be in the expense of her education. When Jennifer told her parents that she was not going to College and law school, they thought it was really stupid to go off and try to be a movie star.
She was raised by her father on a vineyard in California. After attending summer camp she goes and lives with her mother, Elizabeth James, who she has never truly met
