Tuberculosis (TB) is a granulomatous disease which primarily infects the lungs but can spread to other vital organs. It is caused by bacteria called Myobacterium tuberculosis and if went untreated, can be fatal. TB is spread through the air when a person who is infected coughs or sneezes and a person nearby breathes the air. People who have been diagnosed with HIV are at a higher risk of contracting TB since their immune systems are weaker. Other risk factors include having diabetes, use of alcohol and drugs. In this paper I will discuss the normal functions and anatomy of the lungs and how TB effects these functions.

From the larynx, Bronchi trachea splits into two bronchi each leading to a lung, each lung is divided into lobes. The right lung has three lobes and the left has two lobes. The right lung is slightly larger than the left lung. The two lungs are mainly made of up connective tissue, which gives them their soft and spongy texture. The bronchi branch are smaller and are called bronchioles which are divided many more times in the lungs. The lungs is made up of connective tissue, blood, lymphatic tissue, air pathways and alveoli are at the end of the branches inside of the lungs. The alveoli sends oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. One of the common diseases in the respiratory system that many people around the world face is emphysema or also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a chronic lung condition where the alveoli or air sacs may be damaged or enlarged resulting in short of breath (Mayo Clinic, 2011). If emphysema is left untreated, it will worsen causing the sphere shaped air sacs to come together making holes and reduce the surface area of the lungs and the amount of oxygen that travels through the bloodstream, blocking the airways of the lungs (Karriem- Norwood, 2012). The most common ways a patient can get emphysema are by cigarette smoking or being exposed to chemicals, dust or air pollutants for a long period of time. Common physical exams reveal a temperature of 100.8 Fahrenheit, 104 beats per minute, a blood pressure of 146/92, and a respiratory rate of 36 breaths per min (Karriem- Norwood, 2012).
