This model of health can look at people as if they were or their body was a machine. The medical model of health views health as the body parts functioning in the correct way and ill health as a malfunction of this and needing medical intervention. This model of health can view health quite narrowly as it only looks at the medical aspects of health. The central activity of the medical model of health is treating disease. The reasons for why the illness occurred in the first place, is not the centre of medical model but instead how to treat the illness. The two aspects of medical model of health are diagnosis and intervention. Advantages of the medical model of health: An advantage may be that it creates advances in technology and research. This is good because without this model of health there would be very little known about how to treat/diagnose different diseases and eventually everyone would become ill. This model of health can also enable common problems to be treated effectively and prevent diseases developing into untreatable and more serious illnesses. Another advantage may be that it can extend life expectancy and improves quality of life. It can be successful in helping someone return back to good health. Professionals with specialist knowledge may be needed and they are also very expensive to train. Another disadvantage may be that technology, equipment and technological developments are often very expensive. Another disadvantage may be that it has a very narrow view to health and only sticks to the medical aspect of health. Often the medical model of health does not encourage people to live in healthy ways as they can fix/treat the problems instead of finding a way to prevent it.
