Becoming a Medical Coder can be a rewarding career for those who become captivated with the medical field but do not wish to be a hands-on caregiver. This individual needs to be a very detailed oriented person who can read and comprehend all the documentation entered in the medical record. Some may say a coder is someone who can relay the facts and tell a shorty story about a patient. They are many different types of coders that range from outpatient coding to more intense inpatient coding. Choosing the one best for you will help you decide how much education is required for the type of coding you prefer. AHIMA is a world recognized organization that list on their websites the different types of coding certifications available today. Online education courses are available through the AHIMA website or you may contact your local colleges to see what courses they may have to offer.
