Another school shooting goes down and is preyed upon by the media for a gripping new story. Jonesboro, Arkansas, West Paducah, Kentucky, and Littleton, Colorado all have one thing in common. All these places are sites where school shootings have occurred. Why do school shootings happen and who is to blame when they do happen?. These are two questions that are still trying to be answered. Some people say that school shootings are due to the excess marketing of violence in movies, television, video games, and music. "'There is a difference between what one has the right to do and what is socially responsible', he says. It appears that they have targeted a mass audience for this material, and then they're 'horrified' when it's discovered what they've done. They're being duplictous-in the end, they're lying" says Andrew Schwartzman, president of public interest law firm the Media Access Group(Holland). I tend to agree with this point but I believe that there is a bigger and more substantial factor when looking at school shootings. I believe that parents have to take most of the blame for school shootings.
Why should parents have to take blame for something that their child has done wrong. Well, it is pretty simple. Parents are the only people who can control what kind of music their kid or kids listen to, what movies they see, what video games they play, and what kind of programs they watch on TV. The parents should be held accountable because it is not possible for the school to control what the kids do out of the classroom. Since the Littleton, Colorado shooting, school shootings have attracted attention to laws that make parents criminally liable for their children's actions. Since then, twelve states including, Alabama, Arkansas, California and Ohio, have come up with parental responsibility statues. Under these laws, parents can be prosecuted based on the failure to supervise their children("Parents"). Tom Lynch also believes that he is responsible for the violence that his kids are exposed to saying, "because as a parent, I can do something about the entertainment viewing habits of my children. As far as I know, my wife and I are still in charge on the home front, and we plan to keep it that way as long as we're still paying for the Nikes"(Lynch).

... morals, like going to church. I myself, believe that God can be the biggest or least influence in a kids life.
Violence in the media and gun control are two of the biggest factors when it comes down to school shootings. But after it is all said and done it is the parents responsibility to control and bring their kids up right. That's what everything comes down to. It all starts in the beginning. Parents have to start from when the kid is wearing diapers. The parents have to decide on what the kids will watch on TV, listen to in their headphones, play on their computer, and watch at the movie theater. After all, the school can not supervise kids after school hours. This evidence found following the Colorado massacre seemed to indicate a parental failure to detect and deal with troubled behavior by teens suspected of the killings(Chi). Kids have way to much freedom in today's world. They don't know what its like to be told "no". From letting the youngster get whatever toys he wants, to letting the sixteen year old pick out his own car. Lets face it, kids today are spoiled by their parents and the people around them. And in the end: It kills!
Both a rapper and an MC, Tupac Shakur was a very famous artist during his short time on Earth. Better known as “Makaveli” or “2pac,” Shakur influenced many young teens and adults his age. 2Pac was born in East Harlem, NY during June of 1971. The name Tupac comes from a revolutionary leader who was killed after leading a revolution against the spanish in the 18th century. Most of the family Tupac was raised around were involved with crimes, drugs, and charge convictions. His first job in the industry as an MC was with a hip-hop group Digital Underground. Along with being an MC for this group, he was also a backup dancer and roadie. He was also featured on the group’s song for a soundtrack to a movie called “Nothing but Trouble.” He went on to record both an EP and full studio album with Digital Underground before leaving to pursue his own solo career. His first album “2Pacalypse Now” did not receive mainstream hype at it’s time but did feature artists such as Nas, Eminem, and the Game. It also reached Gold status by the RIAA. His next album, “Strictly for my Ni***z” Hit ...
Gina Marchetti, in her essay "Action-Adventure as Ideology," argues that action- adventure films implicitly convey complex cultural messages regarding American values and the "white American status quo." She continues to say that all action-adventure movies have the same basic structure, including plot, theme, characterization, and iconography. As ideology, this film genre tacitly expresses social norms, values, and morals of its time. Marchetti's essay, written in 1989, applies to films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Rambo: First Blood II. However, action-adventure films today seem to be straying farther away from her generalizations about structure, reflecting new and different cultural norms in America. This changing ideology is depicted best in Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers (1994), which defies nearly every concept Marchetti proposes about action-adventure films; and it sets the stage for a whole new viewpoint of action in the '90's.
School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
Since 1980 till now, there have been many school shootings. Many innocent lives have been taken. Schools have become less safe. People blame either bad parenting or video games. Bullying is another factor as to why students end up shooting at schools and then ending their own life. It is so tragic and must be stopped.
Young adults are not just creating this school violence, kids as young as twelve are committing acts as dangerous at their own school shootings. In Sparks Middle School in Nevada, twelve-year-old Jose Reyes had taken his parents hand gun with him to school. He had shot 2 children and killed a teacher that was also a war veteran. He then turned the gun on himself ("US School Violence Fast Facts." CNN). Many other incidents had occurred as early as 1927 to present day. Many of these shootings include the principal and certain classmates as the target. Simple disagreements between classmates can trigger a response that creates the such violence.
Over the past few years there have been many incidents when children bring guns to school and shoot their fellow classmate(s) and/or teacher(s). The most recent and probably most tragic happened in 1998 at Colombine High School in Colorado when a group of students entered the school and murdered several students and a teacher. The first thing that everyone wondered once they finally heard the news is how the children got the guns? Supporters of gun control believe that if there were harsher gun laws, a lot of the school shootings would have never taken plac...
Social anxiety is a predominant disorder amongst numerous individuals (Moscovitch, Gavric, Senn, Satnesso, Miskovic, Schmidt, McCabe, Antony 2011). Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is defined as a fear of rejection and being negatively judged by others in social situations (Kashdan, Farmer, Adams, Mcknight, Ferssizidis, Nezelf, 2013).
Having anxiety is common and a part of everyday life however; there is a huge difference between a fear and a social phobia or anxiety disorder. The difference and important distinction psychoanalysts make between a fear and a phobia is “a true phobia must be inconsistent with the conscious learning experience of the individual” (Karon 1). Patients with true phobias “do not respond to cognitive therapy but do respond well to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy” (Karon 2). Social phobia is a serious anxiety disorder that should not be taken lightly or mistaken as a fear you will simply grow out of the older you get. Social phobia has the power to destroy lives and can prevent people from living and enjoying their life to the fullest. Social phobia is a disabling condition that often starts between the ages of early childhood and late adolescence. The origins of social phobia can be linked to “traumatic social experiences and social isolation” (Hudson118-120). Social phobia is treatable however; research and statics show that not many seek help.
According to DSM V, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), is defined as a persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears that he or she will act in a way (or show anxiety symptoms) that will be embarrassing and humiliating (DSM V, 2014).
One may be asking, what exactly is social anxiety? Social anxiety is the fear that everyone around is constantly judging one and that one is being critiqued or looked down upon. There are many misconceptions of what social anxiety actually is. Social anxiety is not being excessively shy. For example, a shy person could have a social anxiety disorder but they could not have one just as easily. Just as well, an outgoing person could have an anxiety disorder just as well as they could not have one. Social anxiety affects ones life in ways that are not pleasant and can sometimes be plaguing to the mind. Over 40 million people have been diagnosed with social anxiety, and many more are victims to it, but haven’t been diagnosed The...
Kids relationships with their parents has a huge impact on the increase of school shootings. A survey was conducted by Gallup News asking people, what is causing the sudden increase in school shootings. In this survey 92% of people said that home life and kids relationships with their parents is the biggest factor. Many kids go home after school and receive no attention from their parents. Although this may not seem like a huge deal, it can have a big impact on a child's life. When a kid is feeling neglected at home they may resort to planning a school shooting to get the attention that they don’t receive at home. Parents need to take responsibility for their kids and show them that they don’t need to act out to get attention. Being themselves is enough. “...children are
Social anxiety disorder is otherwise called social phobia. It is characterized as the fear of association with other individuals. It is the fear and uneasiness of being judged and evaluated adversely by other individuals or acting in a manner that may cause humiliation or disparagement. This prompts sentiments of deficiency, hesitance, and dejection. The individual with social anxiety issue may accept that everyone's eyes are on him or her at all times. Social anxiety disorder is the third biggest mental disorder case issue on the planet, and it can impact 7% of the populace (15 million Americans) at any given time. Social anxiety is more advanced than shyness. Everyone has felt anxious or embarrassed at one time or another. For example, meeting new people or giving a public speech can make anyone nervous. But people with social phobia worry about these and other things for weeks before they happen.
It can cause natural disasters such as landslides. Landslides can be deadly, and they can alter the landscape of the Earth. In the 20th century there were at least seven catastrophic landslides caused by heavy rain, leading to erosion. For example, in Brazil in 1967, 1,700 people were reported dead due to landslides and flooding. Erosion can also cause other problems such as soil degradation. Soil degradation is the decline of soil condition. An example of a natural cause of soil erosion and degradation is the flow of rivers. Soil erosion from some agricultural areas may be as large as 300 tons per hectare per year (Earth Science for Students). This leads to soil degradation which can then lead to large economic losses. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S can spend as much as 10 billion dollars a year due to erosion. Soil degradation is also a problem in developing nations. The loss of soil can lead to desertification, the spread of desert conditions. A third problem that can be caused by erosion is water pollution leading to the death of aquatic life. Eroded soil can contain pesticides and fertilizer that can be deposited into rivers, dams, wetlands and other waterways, causing pollution. Also, the soil that erodes will then change into sediment. Sediment is matter that settles at the bottom of liquid. The chemicals that erode into the water can cause excessive algae to grow, while the sediment makes it difficult for aquatic plants to perform photosynthesis. Both chemicals and sediment cause the death of aquatic life, including fish, invertebrates and
Erosion can be defined as the removal of soil particles by the motion of wind or water. Soil erosion is considered to be one of the major concerns of agriculture throughout the world today. The misuse of land, mismanagement of farm land, felling of trees, overgrazing, poor soil and water management are all practices that contribute to soil erosion. Erosion can cause a decline in soil fertility, water supply, and crop yields. Thus it affects the productivity of the land and decreases the production of food, feed, fiber, and fuel ("Soil erosion- causes," 1987). Erosion can adversely cause the social-economic conditions of the state to be affected.
What is Social anxiety? Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, is an anxiety disorder that makes a person afraid of social interactions and large groups of people. A person with social anxiety will be afraid of public speaking and being in large or even small groups. Social anxiety has many physical symptoms. Some symptoms of social anxiety are stomach aches, nausea, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, dry mouth, and headache. These symptoms are very similar to other anxiety disorders, and make the sufferer feel even worse and worsen their anxiety. These physical symptoms can be treated with over the counter medication and rest, but they will not stop the anxiety and negative thoughts. Negative thoughts arise from thinking that other people are judging them in a negative way, not being able to communicate, being lonely, and usually get worse the more time the disorder is untreated.
